It is dead quiet and nothing like the old ones. I use it as an extender. Also yes you can record HD programs as long as you have the right set up.(I don’t know what it is though because I can only get SD cable so I have never checked into it.)

Tips: Get dvrmstoolbox! It will automatically skip your commercials.
