It might just be me and my being weird but I am having significantly more difficulty with windows 8. It doesn't like to run my java programs that friends and I have built. It pops up 3 and 4 questions of am I sure I want to run them. Yes I'm fairly sure since I double clicked on it and/or right clicked and choose to run as an admin. Then it doesn't want to allow these programs to save things into their own directory.

Next it doesn't seem to like to allow running emulation software that will change the clock-speed my processor is reporting to a program. It also doesn't want to play nice with drivers that should be fine since they ran on 7 which is supposedly the same base kernel. Next it doesn't like my old MS software. I like office 95, everyone can read my .doc output why can't I run it on windows 8? Oh yeah because MS wants me to upgrade from code that runs just fine to their new code, that I have to pay for again. Why?

I also don't like that it seems to have a weird preference for opening multiple instances of my messengers in different forms for desktop and metro. Please stop that MS and stop that the messages appear with up to 20 seconds lag between different version.

I am sorry but i have to disagree with a lot of your report. Having been in computers for a very long time and lived through the MS changes (oh yeah!!! BOB) I have to say that as a programmer Windows 8 ui is a big mistake. This UI might work well on a phone or maybe a table (i would *never* buy a windows phone again and probably not a tablet .. can you say zune) but on a laptop or desktop environment the UI is horrible. At least for those of us who *know* our computers and work on them all day (8-10 hrs). It is cluttered and not easy to organize.

You start an app and it takes over the whole screen ... do i really need a 17inch BING page? You can't really resize the screen to the size you want. I need to have several windows open at one time with each one being a different size. Maybe after more days of searching the internet an answer will come.

Luckily there is a Desktop of sorts. It seems, from only using it a couple of days, that it was an add on ... they probably heard so many complaints that they just threw it in. I have yet to find how to log into Win8 directly to the desktop .. bypassing the START UI.

But I get it ... this was developed for the phone crowd. Like those vids you see of someone so intent on their phone, probably posting to twitter or facebook they are walking down the street, that they trip over some big obstacle. I guess that is where we are heading .. the need for lots of visual input .. without any control.

Give me back Aero please. Honestly, to me when it comes to aesthetics, the GUI took a step back a decade.
Also, a start menu button for us power users would be nice. Even just the start up / shut down being in a familiar place. At least there are mods for that... but I think Microsoft could have done better there.

I bought a new desktop computer with Windows 8. Used it for an hour and
took it straight back. This new interface is a disaster. You have to
read a manual to find out even how to turn it off. It took me ten
minutes to find Notepad. The giant smart phone screen just can't be
turned off and you can't boot straight to a conventional desktop. How
product this escaped is a mystery. The arrogance of Microsoft in forcing
people to learn a non-intuitive system is staggering. They did it when
they messed with Office and they did it with Vista and now they have
done it again.

Lol! We don't change the water we drink because there's no substitute for it, there's no competition from, say kerosene!

That's not the case with the rapidly changing tech landscape. Poor analogy. Here there's cut-throat competition. PC market share has been steadily falling every quarter ever since the iPad was released in 2010. PC makers have seen business collapsing. HP even thought about spinning off its PC division. Why is that? All this happened when the excellent Windows 7 was powering PCs. Win 7 couldn't stop the slide. So Microsoft had to think differently and re-imagine their OS to stay relevant in this mobile-dominated world. The result is Win 8 that not only looks and works the same across many devices, but also has faster boot ups etc, features previously attributed only to mobile devices.

And not all businesses are turning their backs on Win 8. Read this:

Metro is definitely a better and more beautiful interface than the tired old desktop. It's not stupid, just different from what you're used to. There'll always be two opinions on anything. You can't satisfy everyone. But people are already adapting to Win 8 and enjoying it. You can see that from the generally positive reviews. Many early critics of Win 8 have already changed or softened their stance after using the OS for a while.

Being an MS employee, I have used it for half a year for my work. My impressions are mixed. Sure, it boots and works a lot faster, it really feels like a step up from earlier versions, while at the same time offering something bold and unique. But for me, there is great confusion about basic functionality like turning off the PC, task switching, viewing images, and running applications in Windows vs. Metro. People relying on shortcuts for most things will like it. I feel that I am still in a learning curve, and would not ask my parents to run it, simply because of how complex it is to learn to navigate.
Except for the fact that it never takes more than 15 seconds to resume or boot, I feel my work productivity has not improved.

However, the final product is a totally different animal, dare I repeat the Apple mantra, "it just works!" and it works fast, and cheap, 40 bucks for this upgrade is simply a super value. And this is on a 6 yo PC albeit with a recent SSD upgrade prior to Windows 8, I am a very happy customer.

I think the author (assuming I didn't miss it) and any commenter here should be required to "preface their comments by divulging the approximate number of hours they have spent using Windows 8. For me: 0 hours, so how could I have any "real" opinion about it except from what someone else has written about it?

It would be a waste of at least tens of millions of dollars in UI research and development if the O/S was not a step forward. Not that that's not possible but highly unlikely. Essentially Human Psychology says we are all adverse to change and prefer the today to be the exact same as the previous day in our lives.

I'm a quick learner and a major multi-tasker. I read earlier reviews slamming the O.S but this review seems unbiased and level-headed. I would not be looking forward to give Microsoft my money though except for the fact I get the employee discount through my sister.

Does the mail app even have a unified view which Outlook has been sorely missing yet is a basic (and highly productive) feature in other programs like Thunderbird? This would be one thing that would indicate to me if they were truly on the ball.

Firstly, I'm also a fan of Windows 7.

I'm moving to Windows 8. Under the hood, it's a more advanced operating system, which is important to me. A neat example is chkdsk in Windows 8 (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/05/09/redesigning-chkdsk-and-the-new-ntfs-health-model.aspx). The cliffnotes is that the run-time is now proportional to the number of errors rather than the number of files.

The task manager happens to be something a lot of people use, but it's really just the beginning of the new analysis, diagnosis, and troubleshooting tools built into Windows 8. These things are important--they provide insight into the system that increases stability of the OS over time. Stability is important to me.

Some of your points are a little misinformed. For example, there's no time when you will need to manually disable the W8 AV so you can install a new AV. The system easily and automatically hands control over to the new software.

And one other thing: I think Microsoft should be commended for putting in features that don't require you to installed 3rd party software. I'm not a typical user--I put together lots of new systems. So to me, installing a bunch of 3rd party software every time I set up a new system is a nuisance. I'd rather have something that works as designed.

I like Windows 7. I like Windows 8. My experience has been positive, partly because I've been willing to re-train myself how to do a few things. W8 isn't a flawless OS, but it's a major upgrade IMO.

I see what you are saying. I'm guessing it was fixed in final version. But I am not mistaken in what I saw because the reviewer showed it on youtube and used those exact words.
I believe you misunderstood what you saw. If you open Chrome, it is always the same program--there aren't two different versions. In terms of closing things, bear in mind that closing things shouldn't be necessary. Memory management for Windows 8 is stacked--if there's not enough memory to run things smoothly, the oldest app is bumped out of memory and the new one slides in. Closing apps is like defragging--one of those things that people used to do when it was necessary...and still do out of habit.

I'm a moderately sophisticated user of PCs, who uses hard core apps like CAD programs but also enjoys using my Ipad. I upgraded to Windows 8 and am totally surprised...I love it! I'm not a fanboy of any company, I'm surprised to say that Microsoft has created some serious innovations here (I never did like Microsoft products). All the windows products were just crap in my opinion (minus V7). But this is a complete exception, they really did something new here. One note though, I bought a windows 8 touchpad (Logitech T650) for my desktop and this makes a huge difference. With my left hand I use swipe gestures on the touchpad, and when needed I use my right hand for precise mouse motions. This works great once you memorize the motions. MS has successfully blended the advantages of consumer tablets with the productive windows environment. Forget all the hoopla about a schizophrenic OS. I think it works pretty darn well and isn't unintuitive, at least to me its the best of both worlds. iOS suddenly seems really boring and unproductive by comparison. The touch aspect though is key...without this I'd probably be frustrated but with it the Windows 8 experience is just so much better than alternatives. Totally slick, interesting, fast and stable...like working on an iPad and desktop at the same time.

I purchased the windows 8 pro upgrade but i will be getting a refund via the cooling off period. I don't like having two seperate instances of chrome and having to install plugins for both versions.Clicking on links in the metro interface will open the metro version of chrome but if i use windows live mail and click a link in there it will open the desktop version of chrome.I don't like the windows backup because you can't do a system image anymore and i can't seem to find a way to click and drag mail to other folders with the metro mail.

It does boot faster and is a bit snappier than windows 7 but i have an ssd drive and windows 7 runs perfectly fine. I found nothing in the metro interface that is that great, and once the gimmick of the news/travel/people apps wears off i am left using it mostly in the desktop mode so i found no real reason to keep windows 8,Just my opinion

If you are a little bit not up to how to use a computer, let´s look at this article about file management. Drag and drop on WP (seems as easy as it can be)
I hardly think you are capable to do basic stuff...

A good example how Windows 8 will be a nightmare for some - TRY TO ADD MUSIC TO YOUR LIBRARY - you go from the 'Metro' UI and then you are bounced into the classic UI (for both regular and RT). The RT traditional desktop is not touch friendly and the graphics are super super small if you are on an RT tablet. They you are given an instruction list with 7 tasks which bounces you from 'Metro' to traditional desktops. All this to add music to your library??? Nightmare begins.

Also, 2 Control Panels (one in 'Metro' and another in traditional desktop. 2 copies of Internet Explorer, etc, etc.

Kudos for their bold and ambitious plans (sincerely), but this is going to be a challenge to keep from turning into a fill-fledged revolt that would dwarf Vista.

Case in point - I installed the latest consumer preview on our home computer. My wife gave it two hours before she screamed at me to uninstall it :-(
