There is a start menu, its on the bottom right corner of the metro interface, if you click it you get metro apps, if you right click on screen you get a ribbon option to reveal all programs.

Also if you hover over the bottom lefy corner and right glick on the small metro tab you get a menu as well.

You can also google winows 8 start menu and takeyou pick.

The one thing you will find is that what ever pc you put it on it will be quicker, ittransformed my living room pc wgich is a P4.

Like Anon ^, I have been using W8 almost full time since the release of the CP just to see how bad the Metro UI was because I don't like the idea of a tablet interface on my desktop, but after using it I realize that the UI is not that bad, I don't love it but don't hate it ether, after some hours of use and understanding that most of the things are on the corners of the screen it is very easy to use. I just see the start menu like 10% of the time I use my computer... think about this, how many times you pres that start? then that the times you will see the UI, most of the frequently used programs you have them on your desktop or pinned to the task bar, and all the improvements in the OS goes over the start menu UI... use it for a week and you will understand!

I've been using Win8 since the developer preview. The Win8 CP was an incredible leap forward in stability and, even tho I found and submitted a couple issues, I still found it easy to use.Metro with a keyboard and mouse is a big issue for most people, but I see the advantages.

There are ways to have Win8 startup in desktop and applications are and will be available to reproduce the old menu some people are missing if people want to go that route. (Even without going into the registry.)

It going to be a big change, but if you're going between Win8, Windows Phone, and a Win8 tablet, having a Metro interface in all places will allow applications to be created and run across them all.

In the long run, this is a good thing. The Metro UI is actually only a small part of what Win8 is bringing, yet that seems to be all people focus on.

As a developer myself, there's no way I could ever get rid of my mouse and keyboard. Instead of looking at the Metro UI as a road block, I see it as a great opportunity for the Windows system to evolve. Just like the ribbon interface in Office, it will grow on people and MS will continue to improve on it as time goes on.

The Desktop PC is not a tablet nor a phone, and personally I will not be upgrading to Windows 8 unless there is a way to completely bypass installing the Metro UI. There are already ways to tweak the registry to turn Metro off in the Consumer Preview of Windows 8. If people are digging into the registry (which is a complete mess and bad idea from the beginning [the registry]), what does that tell you? Maybe people don't like Metro? I don't want to turn it off--I don't want it at all. I am sticking with a mouse and keyboard, because of it's functionality; it does exactly what I need it to do. Slapping Metro across different platforms will pan out as a big mistake. It's perplexing how Microsoft takes everybody as a whole as completely computer stupid; like we're all going to readily and happily adopt this demented and ugly UI they're going to try to cram down our throats. I'm sure some people who barely can use a tablet may like Metro, but not I.

Tablets and touchscreens are a big market (and kind of a fad); I'll stick with my desktop and get real work done, thank you very much. I also run Linux, and have no problem using KDE to get my work done.

Thus far, I'm actually kind of happy that Windows 8 has a repugnant UI, because the Linux market share will increase. Thank you, Microsoft.
