PERSONALLY, I think that MS is right. That Windows 8 will (should) generate tremendous/some demand for their smartphone OS. As people want things that are tied together with their other things, example, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mac are (more or less) tied with each other and i think that is very cool.

MS is trying to do something very similar. Tying xbox, desktop, WP and tablets together.
people with Windows 8 on desktop and xbox will see a benefit in getting the WP instead of the iPhone.

This is only my opinion
But as you said, time will tell

Yeah, Joe. I'm about to install the consumer preview, and I've been running the developer preview for months without too much of a problem. :)

Anyone who hates Windows 8 still has the option of going back to Windows 7's tried and true interface. The main thing I like about Windows 8 is the fact that the start menu can span across multiple monitors, it doesn't have the same bloatware that you usually see, and with .net applications and metro apps, I can make content that works across multiple architectures, without making the code harder to work on. And, at least to some degree, my code will usually work using Mono on Linux.

I think it would be nice to have a full speed Arm emulator built in to the next release of Windows 8 for amd64 compatible processors.

Yeah, sorta my feelings. Touch enabled tablets and A.I.O. units and a seperate monitor. I can't really see myself using a notebook that is touch based. They are just a bit cumbersome in some respects. Think about how the screen is gonna have to be supported now if this happens? Is it gonna turn into the convertible notebooks of the past?

I think Apple is really kicking themselves in the butt by not already having a touch based iMac. I would buy it as long as it is not intertwined with iOS on it. Give me touch based Mac OS X with an iPad or iMac and watch those things sell like crazy. Thats the big issue I have with Apple right now is there is not a full blown OS based on touch. So in 6 months you will see a lot of MS products being bought cause they can have the power of a PC in a tablet or a more useful touch enabled desktop. Maybe Apple is waiting to see how MS does with a full blown OS and then will go through the code and "take" what they want to make theirs work. Seems to be the history, then sue to continue their reign.

Actually the live tile interface side-by-side with a Mac makes the Mac look like what it still is...a 1990`s UI/UX...while Microsoft`s new OS is colorful , pretty , and original.

One could argue that we're starting to see a significant migration of consumers away from Windows to Apple's products. Furthermore, Google continues to take steps towards creating vertical segments in smartphones and tablets by the end of this year. MS on the other hand appears to be sticking with the partnering approach. However, given Apple's success and Google's adoption of the hybrid approach, MS has to decide what its going to be in the consumer space. I'd argue, for MS at least, they are at war but just can't admit it quite yet. Take WP for example. It's gotten very positive reviews by most pundits. However, it's languishing. Well, MS is at war with Apple, Google, and more specifically Verizon and Sprint. Today, there's four main carriers to the cell phone market: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile and pre-paid. MS only has a significant presence with AT&T. Verizon and Sprint both only have one phone each and neither one is LTE and both are 1st generation devices. Again, MS has to take radical steps to overcome these disadvantages. In my book, they should immediately purchase Sprint and out flank Verizon. In doing so, they would have first mover advantage and basically be taking the gloves off with Verizon who's fawning all over Android. Yes. MS is at war in terms of the consumer space but they just can't bring themselves to admit it. They seem to think that W8 is going to somehow generate this tremendous demand for their smartphone OS. Time will tell.

Why does it have to be war? They've both existed side by side for two decades and will continue to do so. As Andy said in his comment, there won't be any mass migration from either side. I use both for different reasons and they've both served me well.

Windows 8 will have the most effect in the tablet space. Desktop users will continue using the traditional desktop interface for what it's been best known for.
As far as the PC makers go, I would expect Samsung, Lenovo and Asus to do great devices while the likes of HP and Dell will keep churning out the regular machines, albeit a bit better looking ones nowadays.

Just curious - why does it have to be a war? Can't it be two alternatives, each with their own attractions providing options for consumers? They really aren't fighting with each other and haven't for a long time.

Different market segments, different fans of each product and realistically, it's unlikely there will be a mass migration from one platform to another.

Not everything needs hyperbole. Sheesh.
