Um, you do know that Microsoft's options for supporting "Desktop" x86 apps on ARM are basically horrible.

To support x86 desktop apps on ARM, MS would have to build in an x86 emulator or JIT x86 to ARM instruction translator, and to have the whole host of x86 Windows apps redeveloped and recompiled for Windows 8/ARM. To do this, MS would need more main memory, more storage, more CPU resources, all for apps that'll run slow and be basically unusable as desktop apps require pixel perfect pointing devices. All this would result in more expensive hardware that'll have poor performance.

It was never in play. If you thought so, you were deluding yourself.

Even Windows 8 x86 tablets with Win desktop app support would be a questionable decision. They could do it. But the results aren't going to be pretty. It'll need large storage, large memory and better than Atom CPU resources. Even with that, it may be a mistake to include support for traditional Windows 7 applications.

After delving into Microsoft's html5 demo of winphone.. I better understand the befuddled look on peoples faces as they poke at wp7 phones on display (then quickly move on to the next phone..) I had thought it was just not my thing after playing a few times in person. After digging deep into the demo: I hate it and can perfectly understand the low sales numbers.

I personally think this would be one of THE stupidest things MS could do.

People have become accustomed to a desktop experience and want that experience when on larger screens, thus they would like their tablet to dock to a large screen setup and have a desktop experience. If they fracture the OS like this--x86 gets one thing and ARM another--then there is NO reason to purchase a Win8 ARM tablet over any other--they will have lost every edge they have on the ARM platform. People don't want Intel on their mobile devices. . . hell, I don't even want Intel in my laptop--tired of their POS graphics and power sucking performance while listening to a fan constantly.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised that MS is/can be this clueless.

Seems to me that this would make a lot of sense, IF they implement it the right way. Here's my thinking: ARM powered tablet only runs Metro apps, which makes a lot of sense because the Metro apps are optimized for the Metro interface (read: touch friendly, large buttons, etc.). However, make an x86 based docking station for that tablet that will function as a full Windows install where you can still use the Metro interface if you want, but can also use the standard Windows interface if you need. To me, that's the best of both worlds and would make a ton of sense. I hope we'll see a lot of devices similar to the ASUS eeePad Transformer (TF101 and TF201) that allow for such a docking configuration. Shouldn't be that difficult to do, overall.

The Metro UI is very hard to use though. And apps pop up on Android every day, and some of them are very high quality. I don't lack any app or game on my HoneyComb tablet. I also don't want an OS like Windows with viruses and antiviruses. Maybe Windows 8 without the old non-Metro part will be safe though? [I write apps for Android myself - Memory Owl HD is my best game, it lacks some polish still, but I try my best]

Honestly, I wouldn't mind it too much if I was only given a metro UI. What's really important is that it must have good software support like the iPad. Honeycomb is a great OS, although a little half baked. The main thing however that makes it so crap is very little iPad "quality" apps. If Windows 8 can get a head start with apps like Office, then it would be an Android killer definately although beating iOS won't be easy.
