I was expecting MS to have learnt the lesson from Windows Phone 7 and hurried things up before it's too late. If they stick to this idiotic calendar they will be screwing their chances to become real contenders in the tablet arena and let themselves be pushed to a very narrow sideline by apple and android. Look at Windows Phone 7 debacle; it's a perfectly good product with some unique appeal but having started so late in the game now the competition is out of his sight. With the tablet it will be a similar story: they are throwing away their chances of a late but hopeful start only to realise later when the times comes that they have now a huge mountain to claim. Why the biggest software company in the world with a coherent market strategy for windows 8 is handing over the tablet market on a plate to Android and IOS with such unbelievable slugginess is beyond me.

Whiny developers being lazy is why Windows is so bloated still. They should look at it as an opportunity to expand market share and get a fresh competitive start, so they should be pushing Microsoft to get it out faster.

MS should pull an Apple and release it with the full Office suite and whoever is ready and willing to play ball when they do can get on board, and if devs aren't ready, they can sit and spin while MS gobbles up marketshare.

Side note: I thought ARM not having a production-ready chipset that uses UEFI was the big hold-up?

If you care about price, innovation, you want several processor makers compete on the same architecture. It doesn't matter if Intel's Atom goes down in power consumption, ARM processors are cheaper and better. When Intel was basically alone making x86 processors, they could decide by themselves the price per processor, sometimes higher than $100. The ARM processors are below $10 and come on System on Chip designs that include all the peripherals and make $100 laptops that can run 50 hours on a battery a real possibility.
