Windows 10 update for phones starting now

This morning Microsoft's Gabriel Aul made it official: the Technical Preview for Windows 10 for smartphones will be beginning today. Today is the day, at last, and finally – the button has been pressed, and the update is, indeed, happening. While we're not 100% certain of which devices will receive said update first, we have gotten some clues – if you purchased a phone in the past year from the higher end of Windows Phone, you may be in luck. Unless you have a Lumia 1520 or 1020, sadly.

Just a few minutes before this article was written, Aul posted an image of the Windows 10 (Windows Phone) developer group – or part of it – giving their official sign off for the first technical build release. At this time they're beginning publish preparations.

As soon as we know when the release will begin, we'll be sure to let you know.

For now, there's deliberation about which devices will get the update first.

UPDATE: According to Aul, we'll be getting a list of devices with support shortly after 10AM Pacific Time today.

UPDATE 2: Devices supported for this first Technical Preview are as follows:

• Lumia 630

• Lumia 635

• Lumia 636

• Lumia 638

• Lumia 730

• Lumia 830

That's right – no 1020, no 1520! We'll likely see both in the near future. Don't fret!

For those of you that can install, you'll have to head over to the Preview Program website now. There you'll get instructions on how to proceed.
