William Shatner tipped for Star Trek 3 as Kirk: a love story

Behold, the next big hype monster for the next big Star Trek movie. You didn't think the folks who own the Star Trek franchise would stop with the resurgence of everyone's favorite vulcan Spock played by Leonard Nimoy, did you?

According to Devin Faraci of Badass Digest, there's a script out in the wild with William Shatner's name on it. In at least one scene – maybe just a bit part – Kirk will return in his original form.

The first Star Trek film in our modern line let it be known that we'd be entering an alternate reality. Perfect to bring on a new cast of actors and certainly not unheard-of in the Star Trek multiverse.

Spock arrived to make it clear that we weren't leaving our love of the original series. Nimoy joined the party to speak directly to his counterpart more than once before the end of the second film.

Now with the return of Shatner, these two titans could be onscreen together as Kirk and Spock for the first time since the 1991 film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Faraci suggests that the plot point (which he's been privy to through a second party) is "plot-driven and integral enough that it might just survive any future [plot] revisions."

Now we'll just have to see if Shatner is willing to make good on his suggestions – several over the past couple of years – that he'd be willing to join in on this series of films.

What say you?

What might this series have to offer the original 2nd captain?
