If you’ve thought about purchasing a new Blu-ray player , think again. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, after October 31 of this year, all new Blu-ray players will have a new set of standards to go by.

The technology that must be supported is BD Java, which will handle the way features like picture-in-picture and other extras will be played. The good news is that PS3 already support BD Jav. Other Blu-ray player might need firmware update or total hardware refresh.

wouldn’t a firmware update solve the problem??? I can see how this may affect stand alone players, but the PS3 can connect to the Net, so hopefully this wouldn’t be a problem.
Wouldn’t a firmware update on the PS3 fix this?
Wow.
The Billion-Dollar Micro$oft Anti-PS3 Propaganda Machine knows no bounds!
The source material clearly states that the mandate will likely only affect standalone players without an ethernet port for upgrading the firmware.
The article never mentions the PS3.
Anyone who owns one knows it’s constantly improving. Getting better and adding features with each automatic firmware and software update.
Don’t believe the hype. Your PS3 will completely support all current and future Blu-ray discs.
Do some research before posting moronic articles. If you read the all of the source material it may of been your first clue. Some further googling will also tell you that the ps3 ALREADY supports BD Java and is in fact the fastest at running BD Java from all the other blu ray players available.

“Early adopters of Blu-ray players may find themselves with inadequate hardware to support media using BD Java software.
Novack continued, “This might be bad news for early adopters who have already purchased a player, but it will not prevent them from playing back future Blu-ray movies. Owners of first generation Blu-ray players will probably not be able to use the full range of interactive features available on future Blu-ray Disc titles.””
Ps3playa,
Accept defeat, no one likes a whiner.
Sony took a blu-ray player, slammed it into your mouth, then jumped on your head with a plunger and started plunging away. “I know I can make you swallow this!” – the business director yelled. And then, after all that – they release a new standard (something HD DVD has always had), which makes all units obsolete.
Sure the PS3 will “Most likely” be able to handle the new format with a firmware update – but that’s hardly something I would spend $600 to find out.
Consider this newb – had Sony not gotten on its “I’m a sony playstation, therefore people will buy me no matter what the costs!” bandwagon, and not tried to bundle it with a crappy expensive HD player . . . they would be kicking everyone’s butt, and not losing exclusive titles left and right . . . unfortunately, they’re doing the latter.
Also consider this – what if instead of a 20GB version – they’d kept the 60GB hdd, and put in a regular DVD (with no upconversion (XBox 360 upconverts all)). How much would they have sold that hypothetical Core version for? $150 cheaper? The BD drive is expensive . . .it’s too bad they’re trying to cram it down our throats, otherwise the PS3 might have been good.
tell you what playa – I’d try and sell that PS3 of yours, before it’s cheaper than a LaserDisc player.

I read the source. And yeah some blu ray players don’t support BD Java. However, the ps3 does support BD Java. In fact, the article doesnt mention the ps3 once, conlusions have been made because people see blu ray and think ps3. BD Java is not some new thing that has suddenly been added to the specification, a couple of blu ray movies already use it.
Yeah. I realised my mistake after posting. I’m sure for all the fancy titles they do pretty much the same job. And I’m not including inaccurate journalism in that generalisation.
To the original author:
I hope the Ferrari laptop Microsoft bribed you and thousands of others was worth it. This site is worthless.
Another idiotic and factually dead anti-PS3 article. How genius.
Guru,
Talk to me in a year. On second thought, you won’t be able to. I’ll be too busy playing sprawling 50-gig games on the PS3 while MS will still be cramming measly 6-level games like Gears of War onto dinky little 8.5 gig DVDs. MS rushed the 360 to market. Now they’re trying to cram an Elite model down your throat and it STILL doesn’t have a high-capacity drive! You know why? Because to put an HD drive (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) in the 360 would be admitting defeat. All 360 games MUST be on DVDs, otherwise they would only play in some boxes and not others. They have to cater to the lowest common denominator. I can understand why you’re so mad. You’re stuck with a half-assed “Next-Gen” system with a “Last-Gen” drive in it that all future games will be chained to.
i need someone to bribe me too
Ok, I hold my hands up, you’ve edited the article. Fair play.
We love readers input, and if reader present us with facts, we will be glad to fix it :)
Thanks
That’s great. But should it not be the authors responsibility to check the facts before posting?
Yes indeed, we apologize for the error and will be working more diligently reporting news.
However we are all human, no one is perfect :) but we learn each day from our mistake.
Well playa you know what I’ve heard? Not from anyone officially at MS, but I heard they’ll be dropping the core version of the Xbox 360 to $250 in order to compete with the WII.
The Elite version coming in April will go back to white, and fill the $399 version’s space for the same price.
The black elite will be available with a BD / HD DVD player for $479
Meanwhile PS3 loses $200 per PS3 sold.
And what game company in their right mind is going to make 50GB games for something with a 2 million person base? When they could make something for the 360 which already has a 10 million person base and make money. . . And the a game for the 360 costs 5X less to produce than a game for the PS3.
This is all about money – not devotion to console. Game companies want to make money — So therefore expect that FF XIII will be coming to the 360 same time as PS3. . . as well as many more.
Don’t take me wrong! I love the PS2 I have. I love the PS3. I hate the fact that a large company has tried to buy its way through a format war (blu-ray), based on the consumer monopoly they thought they had (playstation).
The only reasons the PS2 had 65% of the market are the same reasons the 360 is going to have the same – 1. they released a year early and therefore have more games, and always will. and right now, those games are better. 2. they are cheaper. Both those reasons are why PS3 won, nothing else – M$ saw that, and are now capitalizing — and according to isuppli MS makes $140 on each 20GB 360 sold . . again, in comparison with a $200 loss for sony . . . don’t be expecting a price drop too soon for the ps3.
OK, now this is getting out of control with the ignorance with these sites. Firmware will address the issue, kinda makes a person wonder how much M$ is pushing this. Did you guys get free web hosting or something?
@ xboxguru
well “playa?” you know what i heard, or rather know, MS has already anounced the 360 elite, and you know what it doesn’t have, ya a multi disk drive, get your facts straight, its the same dvd drive, just quiter, so before you go spamming forums with your lies to try and influence people away from the ps3 to go for a 360 just remember that there are dillegent people like me thwarting your obscene efforts to turn this “console war” into a real war.
(geeze if people like you put that kind of energy into your blind brand loyalty, then i cant imagine how empty your life truly is.)
o and your previous non sensical jibbering post full of lies: the ps3’s games use blu ray format, so your arguement about changing the drive is farce and also your arguement about them cramming a “movie format” down our “throats”, resistance takes up more than 16 gigs of space, your dvd’s couldnt handle it, so yes the ps3 needs blu ray for games, and as a bonus HD movies (which are outselling the competition 5:1). oh and dont throw the fanboy stick at me, i own all 3 consoles, and trust me, gears of wars’ slow paced 6 levels and small online(that i must pay for) in no way compares to resistance’s 11 fully packed and fast paced levles and 40 player online with tons of game modes and stats (for free, yipee)
My god. What a bunch of complete buffoons. Hey, heres a tip.. check the specs of the PS3 BDPlayer.. Oh.. look.. IT ALREADY SUPPORTS BD-J.. my god.. idiots. In fact SONY are releasing some BD-J games for it!! Dragons Lair.. even!!
Funny how article writers dont even bother googling anymore… remember.. google? that search thing?
all u suckers ps3 will live and the ps3 will win because yous all said the same bout the ps2 and look at it its still beating the 360… newai ps3 will play all BD READ THE ARTICLE U GRONKS

Go check out that interesting website and tell me guys – Are game companies really interested in throwing 15 million dollars into developing a game console that can’t sell?
,
15 Mil is a lot of money – why wouldn’t they just make it for the Xbox first for 1/5 of that cost, and then do some crappy port for the stupid people who spend more on a console than they probably do on their girlfriends all year long.
.
I mean why would any game company make a game for something that has 10% of the market and sells fewer consoles than anyone else.
.
Oh and XboxandPS3Guru – I was talking about the release after the elite — the Elite is an interim project for the summer. M$ will have a new console release for next Christmas.
.
I was wrong about a few things in the above article though – I think I’m right about them lowering the costs on all Items to compete more with the Wii. Right now, according to Isuppli they could lower the main system $140, down to $259 . . . that would compete pretty well with the Wii.
.
So no, I do my job . . er, homework.

This article and most of the commentary is wrong. BD-J is in all Blu-ray players. What becomes mandatory for new models after 10/31 is secondary video support and local storage for A/V streams. This simply means that on older players titles which have a bonus feature with video commentary PiP may only provide the audio for that bonus feature. The main movie will still work, the other interactivity will still work, just the PiP video might not work.
