Point me to a rant?
MY post cited another professional blog, then noted how even on this inherently geek-biased blog, even on an iPad specific article that will inherently attract specifically the iPad interested – that that blogger’s comments ARE bearing out in even a survey where you would expect a pro-iPad bias.
I don’t believe that’s a good indicator for iPad sales. Today will provide some additional clues.
With my career and experience, I’m as interested in the business strategy as the product strategy.

There wasn’t an ounce of “rant” in my post-
I think you hit the wrong “reply” – talk about needing night school!.

Well, you are right – the numbers are definitely changing, but mostly the “I’m buying another tablet” category.

Honestly, I’d be surprised to hear stories of long lines tomorrow.

Which is a shame – Apple had (key word!) such a huge lead in the tablet segment, there’s really no excuse [in my opinion] for such an iterative device – it certainly isn’t as if there isn’t a world of critiques and critics (and now – competitors) out there for them to draw ideas for improvement from. I thought it took a ludicrously long amount of time for real competitors to arrive on the scene. That kind of a head start is priceless – for Apple to have been sitting on a bench somewhere along the racecourse while others caught up shouldn’t be viewed positively by their shareholders.

I’m really curious how tomorrow plays out.

Not really, because unless I am mistaken, all of the hardware and installed software on the iP2 will work as advertised when shipped, unlike the Xoom where much of its advertised capabilities will be non-functional, and a user will have to send the (cost premium) Xoom back one or more times to attain the functionality.

I dont believe iP2 users will have to send their units back ‘at some point in the future, date uncertain’ for it to function as advertised.

Er no… “with the bias of “iPad article readership on a geek site” these figures suggest somewhere between one half and two thirds of iPad owners who have responded so far plan to replace their original iPad with an iPad2. What that means is anyone’s guess….

Not to mention the recent blast of malware found in the Android Market. Android’s “open” approach leaves much to be desired for people who don’t want to install virus scanning apps on their mobile devises.

Ha, not at all – in fact we mention the iterative nature of many of the upgrades in our iPad 2 review, when we look at whether existing iPad owners should upgrade or not – but I wanted to make sure it was clear that the first poll (“Which upcoming Tablet are you most excited about?”) had been running for considerably longer than the “Will you buy an iPad 2?” poll.

Yeah, I probably shouldn’t have lumped OS X in with iOS since my issues with the two are completely different. There isn’t really anything “dumbed down” about OS X; I just prefer the Windows interface and get annoyed by some of OS X’s quirks. MS hit it out of the park with Win7, and good looks alone can’t really justify the extra expense of a MBP the next time I need a new laptop.

Yeah, and it doesn’t help when some Android products are shipped half-baked just to get them out the door, e.g., the Xoom with: 1) 4G not functional, 2) flash not operational, and 3) SD slot not working. And for that you get the bonus of paying a 10% premium (NB: not including service plan) over the iPad2.

I think you guys are hitting the nail on the head. When I am recommending which tablet to buy to friends and family I ask how technical the person is or if I know that person is technical and likes to tinker and customize etc I recommend Android. If the person is not that tech savvy and wants simplicity and doesn’t care about boot loader and ROM’s etc without doubt I recommend the iPad.

From a market standpoint though those who desire simplicity who aren’t the top 15% of early adopters is a very large part of the market. Google has to get to a point where Android can hit the market who wants simplicity also. They aren’t far.

I didn’t author them, but I certainly do agree with them, and they do appear to be bearing out.

The difference is – back then “Windows on a tablet” was all that had been offered previously, and that failed (for ten years straight – and will again) largely because it was the same-’ol complicated and difficult Windows, minus the familiar keyboard-and-mouse interface that it was designed for. iOS came along as an OS essentially designed specifically for touchscreen tablets. It’s successful because of it’s simplicity and ease of use, as well as accessible price point.

But now, there’s competitors. And now Apple has released a tablet that’s not innovative like the first, rather it’s just played catch-up to the Xoom and Galaxy, gaining cameras and a modern processor just like those tabs have. iPad this time is merely an iteration to bring it back up-to-spec with respect to the world, and I’d argue not up-to-spec with people’s evolved expectations. It doesn’t even have the high-res screen that most had predicted. It still is lacking the things that holdouts have criticized it for, while competitors not only have the cameras, but the other features as well… not to mention where Android already had capabilities like desktops and widgets that iOS didn’t, now Google has made significant investment into tablet-specific Honeycomb Android.

I think it’s the wrong time for Apple to have iterated – they needed to maintain their former lead.

I’m actually disappointed in Google’s careless and negligent approach to Android. At one time I looked forward to purchasing an Android tablet, but decent ones took so long to get to market that I ended up with an iPad and haven’t regretted a minute of it. Especially after watching Android fragment the way it has over the last year, with unreliable, and often times non existent updates to most devices. There is no way in hell I’m going to invest in an Android tablet that may or may not ever receive timely OS updates. Rooters and tinkerers can go to town if they want, I personally don’t want any part of that.

Apple promised an iOS update recently, gave a date, then delivered two days earlier than scheduled. Android fans can only dream of the world class customer service and reliable and consistent mobile OS updates Apple provides to their customers.

I feel (roughly) the same way. Love my MBP, love OS X, but iOS just doesn’t do it for me. Far more excited about Honeycomb tablets, despite Android 3.0′s rough edges, than the iPad 2.

Yes, there’s lots of votes saying “yes” – bear in mind this is an iPad article, it carries an inherent bias. And even with that, only a minority of these readers are saying “yes”.

I think this is pretty telling, and follows a prediction I saw from some other gadget blogger:
1) If you already own an iPad, there’s very little to motivate you to upgrade to the new one. You’ve already got a camera on your phone, and the processor on the iPad 1 isn’t a pain point to begin with. Do many people want to hold a large tablet upright in front of them to webcam?
2) If you have been holding out on buying an iPad, chances are your reasons for holding out haven’t been addressed.

It is so iterative, this is a case of Apple simply playing catch-up… they’ve included cameras on the front and back and a modern processor to compete with existing Android tablets, and called it a day, essentially.

Even with the bias of “iPad article readership on a geek site”, only 11% of iPad owners find this compelling enough to upgrade, and less than 30% find this compelling enough to motivate them into tablet ownership.

That’s pretty telling.

My takeaway is – in one stroke, Apple has decided to give away their lead in this segment. While the public won’t realize this for a while (just like iPhone), this isn’t the food or fuel that Apple needs to maintain dominance.

They should learn from Blackberry – “only iterating” is merely a means for the world to pass you by. Look where Blackberry is today – freefall.

The iPad 2 has just as much potential for success as the first-generation iPad. A lot of people said the first one wouldn’t take off, and now look at it. 15 million units were sold in 2010(starting in April). And now as many as 35 million are expected to ship in 2011.

iPad 2 has a lot of great new features, though the cameras are lacking in reasonable quality. Still, there isn’t much competition for Apple and their tablet. Xoom has the best chance to catch up to the iPad’s success, but it’s still too expensive.

After spending the past 18 months in the Apple ecosystem with my iPhone 3GS and MacBook Pro, the first two Apple products I’ve owned since my mom brought a Mac LCIII home from work when I was 9, I’m relatively certain that I’ll never buy another Apple product. It’s not the hardware that I dislike – everyone knows that Apple’s stuff is uniformly well-made (nowadays, anyway) and gorgeous to boot. It’s the restrictive, dumbed-down interfaces that work great for those who need simplicity but aren’t a good match for someone like me who wants to customize and tinker with everything.

If I have to jailbreak my tablet to get my inbox, calendar and Twitter feed directly on the home screen, then it’s not the right tablet for me.
