I think that Samsung is TRYING to give a lot of us what we want... a tablet with phone! There are tons of wifi only tabs out there. If there was one with phone I'd have bought one by now, but the carriers keep taking the tabs that HAVE built in phone and blocking its use in the American market. THAT is the problem.

You are very wrong. I, and several people I know, have very specifically not purchased the Galaxy Tab 7in simply because American carriers killed the phone capability. Each of us would use it as a phone AND tablet. The size is no issue at all, and in fact is what I am seeking.

I do not use phone often, I already use Bluetooth, and I want a larger interface... but I'm NOT going to spend my money to an American carrier for two separate devices, and pay for service for both, (because they have disabled the phone ability of one) when ONE would do both jobs handily.

I'm with you on pricing but since I don't really need a phone, I'd be a prime candidate for something like this that did allow voice calls with a headset of some sort.

Lack of voice didn't kill it. Ridiculous contract only pricing did.

Sell a Wifi Only version at a reasonable price and this would sell like hot cakes and I would buy one. But I am not getting locked into a contract for a tablet, and I certainly don't want to carry around a 7" phone.

Speakerphone, bluetooth headset, belt holster, whatever. No one wants a phone that size in their pocket, purse or hand. And no one wants two sign up for yet another two year data plan for a tablet.

If they market this as a slate with pay-as-you-go data/cellular, that might work although I doubt any telco will go for pay as you go cellular. Or if the carriers allowed you to use this thing as a wifi hotspot, with your pay-as-you-go data, that might be interesting. Again, the carriers are mostly brain-dead, so I doubt that will happen.

"but the big question hanging over the Galaxy Tab
7.7 is whether – like its predecessor – its potential success will be

Forget about the carriers, just look at the picture of thing with the guy holding it to his ear. It looks totally ridiculous as a cellphone. Using it as such simply screams, "I am a dork."

Another company wasting their money. It seems that Sony, Samsung, RIM, have more hubris and nostalgia from their past conquests than any thoughts on the future. Have you seen the pathetic tablets Sony is going to lose money on? Samsung, you can make my Blu Ray and components for my mac, but that's it. Apple is going to unintentionally create a monopoly b/c these other companies are run by a bunch of pathetic rich kids (seriously look at the nepotism in these companies).

After thinking it over and taking the 5" Note into account, I'd actually pay max $350 for this with WiFi only. That's if they can get it on the market before whatever bomb Amazon has up its sleeve.

The WiFi Galaxy 10 matches the iPad on price and that's good. But sized down to 7" and the 5" Note, you've got to scale that price down as well. Get these on the market ASAP in WiFi only and people will eat 'em up.

You both are absolutely correct. Only Apple has the brains and brawn to sell &500+ device with 3G. If you are by apple price your tablet btwn $100 and $300 and you might sell a few units. I bought my Nook Color from a coworker and rooted an Andriod OS on it. Cost me less than $150 and it works great! When I need 3G I tether it to my iPhone 4.

Wake up. We consumers want IT ALL, NOW and CHEAP. Give me one kick ass device that does it ALL - NOW. I want voice recognition that works so the keyboard is dead along with the stylus. Companies that say NO to innovation (i.e. big carriers who don't let products have voice capability) will eventually get bypassed and destroyed by those same things they now block out of fear of change. They need to adapt their business model to the change, not indulge in protectionism.

So greed is the reason these tablets dont have built in cellphone service? Wow. I wont buy one without it. Its insane to presume I have to buy TWO objects in order to have a portable business station. I wont do it. The tablet by itself is not enough of a draw to get me to shell out $500.

Yes. Samsung facilitates it by bothering to add phone functionality instead keeping it wifi only and getting it in stores. Now they have to waste time negotiating with carriers and it may never come out.

Somehow they were convinced that everything needs to be 3G or 4G capable. The numbers say people prefer wifi and having it now & cheaper vs eventually with a higher purchase price and a AT&T or Verizon contract. WTF does every phone tout tethering if everything you buy has 3G shoehorned in?
