I’m not sure what Tim’s story is, but if Burraak is right, then you could reasonably say Apple is done innovating. People who only have profit in mind will never do anything drastic, they try to play it safe so that if something doesn’t work out they won’t lose big on it.

Yes Iphones, ipads all good there games are a couple MB’s so to are the arcade style games you get downloaded on xbox and ps3. the full games downloads are still small in number as most do not have the bigger hdd. It works ok on PC at the mo ie steam and origin helping to reduce costs also. BUT we are talking net gen here and our networks are already struggaling let alone those in developing countries??? I can see the thinking in sqeezing the second hand market that is worth billions but to what end? We get stuck with games hardly better than the current gen? or we alienate vast developing countries like russia and china? You may argue that the networks will move forward to compensate but who will foot the bill? internet and phone providers are allready asking this with current demand let alone if millions of people start downloading games that could reach 10′s or even 100′s of gigabytes.

Nobody has to get Achievements.

And Apple is already competing in the console market with their iOS devices. The iPad has tons of 3rd-party support and games.

It worked for the iPhone and iPad, and those devices get plenty of 3rd-party support.

As for the “problem” of digital-only, well look at the iPad and iPhone. They’re digital only devices, and consumers love that.

Also, many Xbox 360 and PS3 games are sold digitally (full games and smaller titles).

We have all grown up with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo providing us with consoles and great games. I think apple should stick with what they know, we don’t need another competitor in the market, consoles and games are expensive enough not to mention the add ons we now have to buy to fully complete a game. The industry and the fun of “just gaming” is not the same due to all these achievements we have to get. Apple should stick with the touch devices and use of app store, it’s what they do best.

My idea: a compact gaming console that has minimal use of wires, that comes with a small touchscreen controller but with the capability to also utilize an ipod touch as a controller. It could utilize cloud storage, and/or have a hard drive for game downloading, along with access to the Apple Store. Lastly, the console could be used as a personal computer and/or other functions. That is what I would like to see personally

But surely the App Store could adjust again, like it did with the iPad, to accommodate a games console, even if it’s just the obvious games such as Angry Birds, Real Racing 2 etc. And the Apple Pippin was released over ten years before the App Store, which could significantly change the effect of a new multimedia device, and the improved public appearance of Apple could make any new hardware that seems vaguely useful, or cool, take off.

I imagine a Wii U type device, with a touch screen controller, but without the Wii ‘fun for all the family’ status, and more a leisurely gaming console used when you have nothing else to do, like with nearly all the gaming apps.

I agree, If Apple got in the console league they could completely change it and remove the need for a disc as we see in all of the other devices. Provide a high powered device with 500 gigs of space and make all of the games downloadable. It could be the same size as the Mac Mini in a whisper quiet aluminum box. with a black Apple logo

I’d buy an Apple console. They do everything else better than the Sony and Microsoft, why would this be any different?

I think you’re giving apple too much credit.
Apple is a great company and there is no doubt about it that they make some of the best technology on the market but lets be realistic.
There is no chance Apple could compete with Sony and Microsoft in the games console market.
It just simply wouldn’t work. Their console may be great but they can;t compete with the brand loyalty of the Playstation and Xbox.

maybe but that is because we are at a stange stagnent point in technology where nobody is quite sure what path to take. Bluray cost the PS3 so much it almost didnt recover and MS cant really follow that path either due to licensing. DVD is to old and does not store enough. Solid state is still to expensive and downloads just wont cope with the size and demand of games. Plus we are getting new TV tech ie 3d and is this an area they should support, it is deffo the way forward but its to early to push it out en mass as the sales of 3d tv’s is extreamly low. This is why the wait is longer than normal between devices and if you shoot your load to soon you will get crushed like Sega did with the Dreamcast.

As for Apple comming in now they will sit in the same boat but with bigger issues, ie ppl love Apple but will they trust it as a games device? The answer is probably yes but Apple will have to decide if they want to cheapen down or keep with there high end image and risk priceing gamers out of the market. But the biggest problem for them is for them to come to the game and get the jump on Sony and MS they would of needed to be developing a system 2 years ago. It takes time to develope something new and even more if you want to keep to the same standards that Apple has set itself in other domains. Apple also sells so well because ppl keep upgrading there products each year, could they survive in a world of 7 year cycles? Will they be bale to seporate themselves from the rest of the pack and most important can they even create something that will compete with xbox and ps for the same costs? put it this way spec for spec there pc’s are about twice the price no lie, a new console is normally about £300ish but would yuo be willing to pay £600 for a console that has no history in the market and lacks the partnerships with games companys that sony and ms have?

xbox 360 and PS3 are both several years old. The wii is the latest entrant and even that is showing it’s age. The time for a new platform is now, and apple may as well be the ones to deliver it

There’s nothing wrong with this idea besides one thing, Apple will charge a fortune to buy one of their consoles and although it might be one of the graphically better consoles in a decade and it will surpass anything we currently have, they will price themselves right out of the market. I’d love to see just what apple could do with their technical minds on a console but would I buy one? I think it’s back to the same old argument of betamax vrs VHS or playstation vrs xbox. It’s down to pricing and accessibility.

i think an ATV has some serious potential if it was also a platform for mainstream gaming. However, i think the area with the most potential for success would be the corner of the market currently held by the Wii. Unfortunately, Nintendo is already there. If Nintendo falls, look for the iGame.

(R.I.P Steve Jobs) Wow!! I have been thinking along similar lines of an "Apple gaming console" for months now and do see some promise if you ask me. I also believe Apple can come back in the game industry, reading these "ignorant" comments I can tell not many people Know Apple had a console way back when called "the Pippin" and now maybe is the time for an “Apple Console” to hit living rooms around the world and bring something brand new to the table.

BOOO! The last thing the world needs is another gaming platform and Apple would insist on charging $800 so that they could get their juicy profit margin.

Apple is about to suffer big market share losses – without the magic Jobs at the helm and with real competition coming on strong Apple will be doing all it can to hang onto what they have.
