The key is, Apple needs to prove any patent infringement in court. They managed to prove only 1 infringement and it was a trivial one. Based on the origins of Android with Linux base compared to IOS with BSD base, these are very different “engines” if you like and unlikely infringe as only specific functions/features are patentable.

Fewer and few people are watching TV these days with all the crap they are putting out as programmes/channels. The younger YouTube generation watches it way more often using PCs, tablets and phones. So who wants to go after a dying market ?.

You would still use the remote u press the siri button then it takes a command(just like the phone). If you have a huge library of movies it finds it for you instead of scrolling or clicking around like the ondemand service my provider has takes about 5 mins to look to see if it has the movie im looking for. Not only that if apples getting involved they are going to change how you receive the content on your tv i pay 80 bucks a month for a bunch of channels i do not want only to get to the package that includes the channels i do want. If apple can get networks to share revenue say 2-5 dollars a channel then you can purchase only the content you want. apple is meeting with networks now. Im sure they have more up there sleeve then we all expect this market is huge you get the tv sales as well as become a tv content provider. They already have shows and movies for rent/purchase. YOu will all see. Im excited only hope i dont need to buy a new tv to get there content service.

apple & google just dont seem to get it. they both see tv as a medium that needs to be changed with big payoffs for the winner. i dont see either as being a real world success. i think the tv has stayed the same for so many years simply because people like the passive involvement of choosing a show & just letting it happen to you. my wife would go nuts if i was using the tv to watch web content or surf the web when their is a perfectly good computer in the room, its hard enough fighting for control of the remote without putting the internet on my tv. & voice control for my tv? ridiculous. ”kids, stop yelling, the tv thinks your trying to give it a command”…. “tv,,, i want to watch top gear,,, no,, not top gear america, top gear bbc,,, no not,,,, damn it wheres the remote” same with 3D, they are all half baked gimmicks. & to those that suggest all the extra content available, i am still working through the 1000′s of free movies & shows plus the several hundred channels i get from directv. any content i cant find on my tv i can easily find on my pc.

They can pull it off, look how many people bought iPhone, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S; iPad, iPad2, iTouch. Apple has a $79+billion bank account, they have loyal customers. If they make it people will buy it and they will pay through the nose in iTunes to use it.

Flipping (literally) through channels using CoverFlow might be interesting (using a pair of tuners, one fixed on the current channel, one rapidly rotating through other frequencies?) If it recorded and became the iTunes home hub, always on, always syncing to the cloud… that would be Jobs-like.

Besides iTunes you can’t get into Apple’s “ecosystem” without some type of Apple owned product. Apple is running the same type of business practice as Rim by forcing you to buy their products to use their services only difference is Apple is WAY more successful at it than Rim is. Google lets anyone use their products which is why they have a larger market share.
More than likely this device will appeal to people who already own some type of “I” device.

They came into MP3 players from nowhere and took over. They came into phones from nowhere and redefined what a smartphone was. They came into tablets from nowhere and took over.

Apple has a tendency of making a big splash.

Of course Apple TV hasn’t been much of a success at all, so there’s no guarantee, but it’s foolish to not expect Apple might pull it off a 4th time.

Workarounds are OK if you’re jbing or something like that, but workarounds mean a cat and mouse game, not something I’d want to spend a ton on. I’d be more confident about Google TV if they’ve got TV shows on YouTube with channels. Then it’s basically YouTube on your TV with all the convenience that entails.

Your point is a good one. We assume quite naturally that every business has the goal of selling the most widgets. But each business builds it’s model on a particular market segment, or product ideologue balancing volume / cost& ability to produce /product lifespan / etc to a corporately defined level of quality. It’s about balancing all the elements of product sales with production and distribution. Apple is not right, or wrong because they sell the most product, or less than the most. It’s whether they’ve met their business plan and whether the market continues to reward them sufficiently to be able to pursue that business model.

Yes, I agree with your comment on Apple’s (twice) foray into TV, and Google’s single effort. Google is a brilliant business. But regarding Apple’s product pricing, or value ratio, it’s improving, as evidenced by it’s iPad intro. They slammed the competition. Apple keeps it’s profit margins as high as it thinks it can get away with but has managed to be within a couple hundred dollars here or there of the lower end of the market, especially on iPad.

Also,regarding Siri, perhaps its not a viable remote, but it may be a content locator and be just a coupled portion of a virtual touchpad remote. The Apple App store currently does have a Remote app that is gaining usefulness on both the iPhone and iPad, and becomes a ubiquitous remote to all your Apple music and video libraries on, (and for) all of your devices. Home streaming and cloud streaming is a strong and current reality in Apple’s ecosystem, at least in my home.Consumers tend to weigh that (ecosystem) along with the whole user experience, or at least I do. My dollars are too hard earned to simply buy based just on low price. I weigh the cost differential, the total user experience, and the total usable life of the product, including it’s potential planned product obsolescence. Apple used to have a reputation of supporting it’s older hardware in it’s software upgrades, and there is still that halo effect (even though since the OSX iteration of it’s computers it is eroding that development model. And as far as AppleTV is concerned, my 2 silver & white AppleTV units are NOT being upgraded to be able to do what the new little black AppleTV cube can do. My purchasing metrics may have to change. But then there is the whole Apple integrated ecosystem thing that weighs into the purchasing metrics too. And at this point I’m a part of that ecosystem, and I like it, because it all just works.

Google TV isn’t much of a platform given that Google really doesn’t want to pay for content. But Apple will and will do its TV well.
