I find it hard to believe there will be monumental upgrades to the Wii platform. Nintendo focuses it's gaming environment on child-friendly and nostalgic game play. Cost and the quality of upgrade go hand in hand and I don't think making the Wii more powerful will validate a higher retail price with consumers. Especially not with the anemic virtual store offerings.

If Nintendo were smart, and they've more than shown that, they'll continue the Barnes & Nobles model for a device that can be easily adopted by non-techies but is adaptable for the rest of us. Perhaps it will come with better video output, somewhat faster processor, improved mo-cap and a focus on building up their library of original titles in the virtual store. That last one would make ALL Wii owners happy. I doubt we'll see Blu-ray or even DVD implemented. Nintendo never Nintended to make this box a central home entertainment system. Btw, that was a pun, not a typo.

My instincts tell me Nintendo will step out of the box with this upgrade and the biggest evolutionary shift will be in the remotes. Now let's just hope they keep that wonderful backward compatibility.

If Nintendo is intending to release a Wii 2 next year there are some features that I would like to see as a current owner of the first generation Wii.

1) Blu-ray game media discs - PS3 is the first system to run blu-ray discs in their games and the graphics are so nice for the system. DVD technology is getting old and the disc capacity is not enough to display HD games going forward. The Wii 2 must support blu-ray gaming discs.

2) Support HD quality resolution - Wii 2 MUST have a HDMI port to the latest HDMI spec (currently 1.4a). The wii only had a component capability to 480p which is unacceptable going forward.

3) Upgrade the graphics chip tremendously - Xbox 360 and PS3 blow the Wii out of the water in terms of the graphics chip that is used in both of those systems. This needs to be improved to stay competitive.

4) A movie/video built in app - One of the things that bugged me about the Wii was that it did not have a built in movie/video app. If nintendo is planning on supporting game discs with blu-ray format, the Wii 2 better have a built-in movie/video app to play blu-ray movies.
