This new AppleTV is what it should have been to start with. The limited space on the old made has meant I've never used to the space on it for anything. When you have 300+ movies and the same in albums, 40gb of disk spac just doesn't cut it.
Sure you can sync with iTunes and transfer what you need at that point in time. But, that takes a awful long time, and what if I want to watch something that isn't synced just now.

I would need to get at least a 1tb drive in my appletv to use it as a standalone device.

I agree, Im keeping my "old" AppleTV. Perhaps only because I havent gone the NAS route yet, instead I upgraded the HDD of my original 40GB Apple TV to 320GB to make it a bit more usable - I can now fit all my music and a selection of movies and TV programs. This is great for the lounge where I dont need to have my MacBook Pro on to stream content via iTunes and airtunes. It also means I can take my MacBook Pro away for the week and the content is still available on the AppleTV.

For those interested in upgrading their "old" 40/160GB AppleTV then here are the tips I used:

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/tips/AppleTV_HD_Upgrade/AppleTV_HD_UpgradeGuide.htm

and ATVcloner didnt work so I did the same manually via terminal...

http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Prepare_a_Hard_Drive

ofcourse this was only possible with a Mac.

Enjoy!

I guess I should add

many rumours abound but it looks like it is clear that Apple is hiring folk as app developers for the new Apple device. The rumoured 16Gb ram inside basically means it can hold as many apps as the iphone.

Put that together with the 1 billion dollar data center built in N Carolina and I think you can easily deduce that plans for the TV unit are yet to be fully revealed...

it's obvious there is something more yet to come, we just don't know what.

On Apple's mini-site for the product it does say you already have the stream ability to the apple tv from itunes (on a laptop or desktop) currently it is "AirTunes"

The new improvement in iOS 4.2 is renaming airtunes to airplay and enabling all the IOS devices independently of itunes.

So my guess is someone on Salon is wrong.

I was thinking myself how could i not keep the local storage old model Apple TV I already had. But I have sunced my music and pics up with itunes anyway.

I just use airplay on the ipad or iphone, just like a giant remote and push the tunes, pis, vids by telling it to play them on the device. So no more extra storage is needed.

Only diff then is buying movies. You have to buy them on the pc or laptop or ipad and do it that way.

Otherwise not much difference really.

I download all of my content to my Mac (or PC) so that I can stream to any device in my home. I don't need to download directly to my old Apple TV (or the new one I just ordered), because then it would be stuck there. Since I have tons of storage on my network, why would I care if I have 40GB inside the Apple TV? [I own > 1TB of movies, tv and music]

@Penswoman: from the reading the technical docs, I am convinced I can stream music and videos from any Pc or Mac running iTunes. It says it clearly about music, and it hints at it about videos. Guess I will know in a few days! If anyone knows differently, please let us know!

Apple want to attract more customers with low price of good contents. Could you convert a movie shared by apple tv to other devices as many youtube users do with the help of ifunia youtube video converter? If you can, that’s nightmare to content provider

i don't know pretty well but i can stream files between computers even when my internet is down because it only requires my wireless working, not the internet itself.

im just taking a guess, maybe that works for the streaming, the only thing would be a problem is to keep the pc, mac or whatever iDevice on all the day long

Don, thank you publishing this piece. I bought a new Apple TV I've barely used about a month before the announcement of the updated version. Have been trying to decide whether to keep it or buy Apple TV II.

I do have a question I hope you can answer. At Salon, someone is reporting that Apple TV II will not support streaming from computers. He claims one will only be able to stream from iOS devices. Is this true?
