I own an Asus Transformer Prime and it actually stays cool, even being overclocked to 1.7Ghz.
It's about 65-67 degrees in the house,so the aluminum back is really cool when I pick it up. I guess we'll see when the hotter weather comes, but I do not foresee any heat issues...even playing some kick ass Tegra 3 games:)

I do not think any glass touchscreen equipped device would survive a fall from 2.5 feet.

If your screen makes contact (at terminal velocity which cant be anything more than, say, 12 inches) with the ground you can pretty much kiss that device goodbye. I think people have to understand the trade offs involved when attempting to craft a functional and beautiful product.

I am paranoid when it comes to my iPads and equip them with as much protection as I can. My new iPad is wrapped in an Otterbox case which I hope will protect it from falls, impacts and general rough handling, but I realize that no device is indestructible...

Good lord indeed, you can't compare comfort with dissimilar devices and ignore what makes them different.

No one would ever confuse a iPad with a laptop, it was a ridiculous comparison that did nothing but confuse people as to whether the increased heat generation is a issue or not.

The iPad is a sealed device, it's completely reliant on passive cooling and has no way to vent excess heat if it builds up too fast. So it takes less heat for it to start feeling too warm.

Never mind you were depending on stereotype because not all laptops get too hot to the touch. A ARM based laptop especially would run cool to the touch. Along with the fact most people just use a cooling pad with a laptop but they can't do that with a tablet!

While also you ignored the difference in how the two type of devices are used. What's too warm for the lap is quite a bit warmer than what's too warm to hold in your hands constantly!

Then on to web browsing, problem is not all browsing requires the same amount of computing power. Higher resolution graphics and images do take more work and nothing is going to change that the back light requires 30% more power for the same amount of brightness as the iPad2.

So guess what, specs matter! You want to ignore them then do so at your own risk but stop pretending there was nothing wrong with what you tried to state! If anything you should have compared the new iPad to the iPad2, at least then it would have been relevant!

I do not have a heat problem with my new ipad 4g but I do think it is another poorly made apple product. The screen shattered after dropping it off of a bed 2.5 feet. Apple replaced it the same day for $50 since I had the apple+ warranty which was great but they voided my 30day return policy and told me to sell it on EBAY if I did not want it anymore. After an Apple repair of your product Apple does not honor their own policies. This was my first apple product since the 90's. I am not impressed.

What you understood is what you wanted to understood. I laid out the reasons why it wasn't valid, but no one can stop you from believing what you want to believe.

The facts are the facts, you either accept them and follow the logical progression of analysis or you interpret it in the way you want to and conclude what you already decided.

Just don't confuse the later with a actual logical path of argument.

My iPhone 4S had severe heating issues in the first couple of weeks. It was hot enough to be unusable. But it got resolved with the next software update. The new iPad is just as hot. Actually, a little hotter especially towards the left of the. Forget testing it with Infinity Blade. I run a few songs, keep the calendar app open and that's enough to get it hot. Of course, not all new iPads shipped have the problem.

Sorry but but that's not accurate...

1) It doesn't matter how warm a laptop gets because the iPad is not a laptop, and unlike a laptop you'll be carrying the iPad much more than you would a laptop. So how warm it feels matter more for a tablet than it does a laptop.

2) The only reasons the iPad isn't as warm as a laptop is because it's a less powerful device. PC Tablets like the Samsung Series 7 Slate and Asus EP121 slate run much warmer because like laptops they're using much more powerful hardware. Different performance range devices have different ranges of what's considered acceptable.

3) Whether a device is too warm depends on the limits of the device, which can't be compared to other devices that are designed to handle more heat. The iPad has no active cooling like a laptop for example, it relies on less efficient passive cooling and unlike a laptop the battery takes up the bulk of the device and doesn't have the level of physical protection that laptops can offer to its hardware.

What Haris Radzi did was point out that there is a difference, but just neglected to go back to the actual heart of what should be considered with how the new iPad design effects its usage compared to the iPad 2, or provide additional perspective.

Though on graphical comparisons you're on stronger ground but it should be pointed out that even then tablets rely more on graphical UI, along with not always being used at optimal viewing angles, and thus screen quality is more of a concern for tablets than laptops.

Whether it gets too warm to hold is a matter of opinion. However, whether it gets too warm for the battery is a matter of physics and practicality.

Apple already stated the operating temperature for the new iPad is 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C) under specification and non-operable temperature as -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C).

So going 116 degrees is already going over that recommended range and people have been reporting problems with charging, with worse case being the system shuts itself off.

While Apple saying it's within acceptable range is just saying they accounted for it and is why the system is set to protect the battery by doing things like suspending charging and shutting off when needed.

So like it or not there were compromises made for the new iPad. It doesn't mean it has to be a deal breaker for most or that it'll be a issue that most would even be aware of but it's something to keep in mind when pushing the limits of the device.

and what is the safe thermodynamic parameters of their battery?

Unless ipad3's start failing in mass, or unless you're privy to the heat specifications of every component in an Ipod...its pretty pointless to act as if the higher temperatures automatically equal device failure. Apple has said they fall well within specifications, and until we see otherwise, its useless to claim liar. I'd assume that a successful company like Apple wouldnt want to open themselves up to lawsuits by making their devices unsafe to use or predisposed to device failure.

and this is all even if the majority of people are talking about heat in regards to effect on component longevity. The vast majority of comments I've read on engadget, slashgear, and gizmodo are from people who claim it gets too hot to hold, uncomfortable etc etc...and that's where I call bullshit, because even with active cooling my laptop gets fantastically hot, even considering its resting on top of clothes.

Power consumption is about double for the new iPad. The screen back light alone consumes 30% more power. All of which is why they had to increase the battery capacity by about 70% just to keep about the same run time as the iPad 2. While the charger is still the same 5v and 2A as the iPad 2 uses.

So the charger has a harder time keeping up with consumption but to protect the battery from the increased heat the charging can be suspended and the system can even shut off if it really gets too warm.

For casual use this shouldn't be a problem but it's basically a compounded issue of power consumption and heat generation that's causing the battery charging issue. Even when off the system will take longer to charge because it has to charge a larger capacity battery but only at the same rate as the iPad 2 gets charged.

So better graphics but not without a price...

The A5X is basically just a modified A5, they just doubled the RAM and doubled the number of GPU's but left the rest the same. It's even still made using 45nm FAB at a time most are moving to 32 and soon after 28nm. Though Apple itself is working on the A6, it just wasn't ready for this release.

Laptops may generate more heat but they're also designed to handle more heat.

While the iPad is intended as a low power device, as a alternate example a Slate like the Samsung Series 7 can also generate a lot more heat as it also is intended for higher performance but is still a tablet. So it's not just tablet vs laptop but low vs high powered devices...

However, it's apples vs oranges comparison in any case because you don't generally hold a laptop for long periods like you would a tablet and laptops are more generally intended as much more powerful devices for doing work.Besides, how warm the device feels is rather besides the point of whether it's a problem.

Mind that unlike a laptop the iPad has all components placed together in extremely close proximity and completely sealed casing.

The most worrying part of which is the battery that also takes up most of the internal space. To get the most capacity possible Apple used a high capacity lithium based battery but the particular type they used doesn't have that great of a heat tolerance and is the main concern with too much internal heat build up and only passive cooling available.

Though Apple has apparently put in fail-safes but these in turn can effect usage. Like preventing the battery from charging if the system is too warm or even auto shutting the system down if internal temperatures do get to the point of threating the battery.

The longer charge times are also a effect as people have started noticing that even when the charge indicates 100% that the system still charges the battery for another hour, which is in line with helping to protect the battery with a slower trickle charge when nearing full capacity.

Though also the higher power consumption not only generates more heat but can make the system take much longer to charge while in use. Apple had to increase the battery capacity by about 70% just to keep the run time about the same as the iPad 2, but didn't change the charger. So even when off it still takes longer to charge to begin with...

So while not a major concern for most but something to keep in mind nonetheless.

The new iPad definitely runs noticeably hotter than any of the other tablets I've had experience with (Nook Color, A500, iPad2, Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab 8.9). No it certainly won't burn but it did lead to some sweaty hands!

I don´t own an iPad but I went to test it in the store nad I felt two things. The first, it was hot, much more that I expected, after a kid was playing with it. Much more that the iPad 2 I tested before (with other kid playing). The second one was that even while pluged in, the ipad was losing charge. I started using it with 12% battery and after five minutes testing text, browser etc. I left it with 11%... I tested other iPad two days after and it shut-down while using it, even while plugged... Not sure if it was bad luck but it was surely weird.
