“Nintendo isn’t doing anything innovative enough to make Microsoft or Sony want to follow suit.”
The same was said about the Wii and the DS.
Microsoft made Kinect. Sony made Move (and the Sixaxis controller before that).
Sony gave touch control to the PSV and we got the iPod Touch which became the iPhone.

Every time Nintendo does this, people exclaim that it’ll never catch on…until it does.

And you’re going off of someone’s anonymous rumor about the Wii U not being powerful, in the face of other NAMED sources that say it is?

And what are the chances that the Wii U will compare favorably to the consoles releasing in 2013? It has the equivalent of an ATi Radeon HD 4850 in it while the Orbis supposedly has two 7670s in it. That’s like saying the original Xbox is totally comparable to the 360, it’s just not accurate.
(For the record the Xbox was pretty powerful. Just saying.)

Nintendo is not leading innovation in gaming? So wrong. I guarantee you that both Sony’s and Microsoft’s next systems will have touch screen controllers. They followed on motion gaming, and they followed on everything else prior, and they will follow on the Wii U’s touch screen controller. The only reports of the Wii U being under-powered suggest that “shading” might not be as good. However, most sources say that RAM and CPU will be better for the Wii U than the ps3 and xbox360.

You see, Nintendo still has the market share hands down. Check the numbers. They will likely continue this and they will always be a innovative company in gaming. Why? Because it is all they do. They only do gaming. They have billions in the bank to invest in the next wave of games. And they spend a lot of time thinking about how to innovate. They will continue to surprise people.

It’s funny that people are comparing the Wii U to the PS3 and the 360 and are a little impressed when the PS4 and 720 are just around the corner. I’m sure those’ll end up way more powerful than the Wii U; that said, I’m almost sold on the Wii U anyways, even if the 3DS is an abomination and I love my Vita wayyyy more.Don Reisinger is known for writing idiotic articles like this, just look at how he fellates Apple on CNET in articles that are totally unrelated to Apple products(“why would you wanna buy a $250 Vita and play hardcore games like Gravity Rush when you can play awesome games like Angry Turds and Cut the Rope on a $500 iPad? The Vita’s totally a ripoff in comparison, Apple sure does rock.”) Seriously, go read his stuff for a good comparison. I literally can’t remember ever reading a good Don Reisinger article, it’s really frustrating to see his work featured on site that I previously had a modicum of respect for like CNET and Slashgear. Oh well, I can always blacklist certain sites so I don’t accidentally use them anymore.

I think it is far to early to start discounting Nintendo’s potential impact on gaming for the future, especially since the Wii-U has yet to release. True, Nintendo’s current home console has been having trouble recently, but it would be remiss to ignore their massive success in its original implementation, or the history of Nintendo’s innovation at large.

This article is a little too devoid of fact and a little too filled with speculation and loose claims for my taste. I don’t think we can even begin to predict what kind of impact the Wii-U will have relative to the gaming industry or its competitors until it has been released. Til then, as a gamer, I’m just going to hope for the best.

We also can’t forget that Mr. Miyamoto, one of the most creative minds in gaming’s short history, still works for Nintendo.

Well thats a moot issue anyway. Given that it’s competition will come out very soon after it’s released the wiiU will have to be faster and more powerful than the Xbox720 and PS4. Those are the next gen consoles, not the current gen 360 and PS3. So if Nintendo’s building to compete against the 360 and PS3 they have already placed themselves behind the pack.

This article was a bunch of crap. Nintendo has determine gamings future, Nintendo has throughout history. And outside of that Nintendo has sold and will continue to outsell the competition. As for the 720 and PS4 they won’t be out for a while and if the rumors are to be true that they come out next year and are to make the Wii U look obsolete as you suggest it would bomb from the very start. The prices would skyrocket seeing around 500 600 and even if they are amazing on the hardware what would be the point if current tv’s can handle only 1080p it just be a giant waste of money. Nintendo Wii U is surely going to have a lot more horsepower than the current gen and the controller will open a new horizon to gaming. Nintendo will surely do amazing yet again.

The only things Nintendo was missing were online gaming and third party support, both of which they’re already fixing with the 3DS. The reports that some companies working with the Wii U don’t think it’s as powerful as current gen consoles are completely unconfirmed and there are more confirmed reports of developers being amazed by it’s power. Nintendo still makes the best first party games and can probably turn a decent profit even without the third party games that they’ve already got lined up for the 3DS and Wii U.

Of course you only take into account the NEGATIVE comments about the Wii U’s power. Well if the rumor about the 720′s processing power turns out to be true, it’s believed to only be 20% more powerful than the Wii U’s processing power. Some how the only way Nintendo will be smoked is if Sony out does everyone but that would be a gun wound in their own foot since 3rd party devs wouldn’t want to put the effort into using that power just for the PS4 and having then to down the game for Wii U and 720. I think that this next gen will see the 3 systems pretty close in terms of power.

this is a terrible and biased article. it is only comparing systems in terms of power, which is not only ridiculous, but nintendo has been behind in terms of graphical output for a generation or two, but has succeeded in innovation and sales throughout. also, the author says that the wii u doesnt seem to be innovative enough…is he on the same planet as we are? the most innovative thing sony has done was make motion controllers for their home console and put touch screens on their portable-OH WAIT. nintendo did that already. and all microsoft has done was put a webcam on their system. a damn snazzy webcam, but webcam nonetheless. i cant wait until E3 to see all of these nintendo haters squirm.

I don’t know. The N64 and Gamecube weren’t that successful compared to past Nintendo consoles, but they got back strong with the Wii.
But I do think the touchscreen gimmick is lame. First, breaking a controller seems easier than ever and replacing/fixing seems like serious ass. Second – what’s wrong with just using the old Wiimote? Or a redesigned one?

2 things they should have worked on – updating the hardware and improving developer support in the “gamer” gaming area. Everything else seems like trying real hard to fix what ain’t broke.

It’s true, the Wii & DS were bombs, and barely impacted the gaming market. The sales figures were terrible, & i think Nintendo should just close up shop. The 3ds is a stinker, i mean who wants to play games in 3d anyway? 2d is more than adequate, especially if you’re playing the same fps games over & over for years on end.

Slashgear please stop printing stories from this shill. Each and every article he writes is just awful and clearly designed to either spread nonsense for whoever pays him or is just the ranting of a deluded mad man. Last time it was his awful article on used game, before that on how the Wii U shouldn’t be release, blah blah, its got to stop.

Firstly “Sony seems to be doing a good job of attracting customers and growing its user base.” Sony just cut 100,000 jobs and The Vita is selling abysmally(far worse than the 3DS was at this stage of its life, yet we don’t see any Sony are doomed articles being posted by Don).
For the last few weeks in Japan the 3DS has outsold all Sony consoles combined by a substantial margin and currently Nintendo take up 10 of the top 20 games. Doomed they are I tell you doomed!!

Where is this void you speak of exactly? It would be nice to see Don answer to all of the people that call him out on his bullshit.
