Psst. Sony's lost all of its profits from the PS1 and PS2 generations thanks to the PS3. The Vita isn't exactly helping their cause either. In fact, Sony made the same mistake with the Vita as Nintendo did with the 3DS. They put a price point on hardware that most didn't want to pay.

Now that Nintendo's up to 17 million 3DS handhelds sold, and that number is only going to continue to grow once NSMB 2 hits this summer, not to mention that the company is expected to start making money off of their hardware by just a bit after that point, you can see why I can't take your opinion seriously.

Sony is in much more danger of going bankrupt with the way they've been hemorrhaging money the last six years. In fact, they lost way more than Nintendo did in the last fiscal year, yet you want the company that just posted its first ever (I believe) fiscal loss to sell to a company that might not even be around in 5-10 years? Okay...

Right, maybe you don't understand realized profit. Nintendo post its first fiscal loss, in its entire history. Which by the way has less to do with its strategy and more to do with economic recovery associated with its core market. Sony posted losses in the billions, while all of its divisions bleed money. Nintendo sits on a forty-billion dollars of cash. Sony can't afford Nintendo, you illiterate moron.

I have to say...why the hell would anyone suggest this? Sony is even bigger trouble than Nintendo. Just because Nintendo had it's first ever loss in 30 years...doesn't mean anyone should buy them.

Face it, the 3DS is growing in popularity and in a few months will earn Nintendo money, I've seen actual gameplay of the Wii U and it's good enough to win over the hearts of the people...

...there's no founding basis on this what so ever.

This article is unwarranted and nothing but wishful thinking. Much ado about nothing."

Yeah really. I feel like I'm reading something that resulted from "bring your son to work" day.
It's extremely nonsensical given even the last few years' company history, let alone taking their performance from the 80's to present day. Hence some of the flames.
I don't like the Wii at all, and have spent several years just about hating Nintendo for some of their business antics and console decisions, but ffs, to conclude they're in trouble or should deviate from their business model can only be attributed to wishful thinking.

I'm sure the company that bounced back from the Virtual Boy with things like the DS, Pokemon and the Wii have a bit more faith than to sell to Sony. It's not even sensible for Nintendo to drop out of the hardware business. Being a big fish in their own pond has worked more often than not for Nintendo. Whether playing it safe and conventional or taking a risk, on average they're far ahead with their game systems. It would be beyond stupid to give that up.

I think the author has a very short memory. Has he forgotten the 3 consecutive years the Nintendo Wii was the MUST HAVE console? Demand was consistently high and supply seemed extremely limited. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, who have pinned their hopes of profitability on every controller and video game sold, Nintendo has always made a profit off EVERYTHING it sold. Unfortunately, the Wii's limited graphics power and lack of HD capability have brought sales to a slow grind but they've enjoyed a fun and highly profitable ride selling 70 million units to date. Nintendo is a company that has plenty of cash reserves, innovation and would need to tank on every release for the next 10 years before they would become another Sega. I'm sure Microsoft and Sony would salivate at the idea of Nintendo on the selling block but they know thats not going to happen.

This article is unwarranted and nothing but wishful thinking. Much ado about nothing.

I agree, ever since Sony boy Verant (company that CREATED EVERQUEST) They have gone down hill in my books. It went from an Awesome MMORPG to a shit theater.

I like comparing Sony to buyout companies, taking credit for stuff they don't make.

Or forcing everyone to use their manufactured goods (Almost all CD-Rom drives have a Sony component in them)

Sony sucks balls. They have never made their own stuff, and never will. If they did, people would see just HOW unimaginative they truely are.

I like good gimmicks (by definition all gimmicks are good). Judging from the brief spec sheet we got a year ago, tech demos, and devs like Crytek I would say the Wii U will outperform everything this gen. Like how the Wii out performed everything from last gen. Nintendo has said it will run full 1080p and if they have been slowly imoroving with eaxh dev kit I would say that is likely. Though I do not think it will be massively more powerful than PS3, but it will be better performance wise. Shoot even if they just go with 2009 hardware (that is pretty cheap) they should be able to outperform it. We will have to wait on E3 or after sadly. Gonna buy it regardless though.

You make a good point (although some games are 1080p, most are 720p). But I highly doubt the Wii U will actually outperform the PS3. I checked Nintendo's website, but they're pretty vague on the specs.

More than just the resolution, I find Nintendo's gravitation toward gimmicks over substance to be troubling though. I don't know, it's all talk anyway. This almost certainly won't happen, but I like the 'what if' in this instance.

Consolidation is exactly what is hurting the gaming industry today. Consolidation of hardware and software companies is not helping it thrive. The move might be beneficial for Sony; helping it compete against Microsoft, but it would be horribly bad for consumers. Look at the stagnation in the gaming industry. I might puke if I see another damn MW game or CoD, or Halo-----Oh wait, that's right-----I will be right back.

The gaming industry doesn't have the gusto and adventurous spirit to explore and develope new, better, and/or different content that it once did, and that is sad for everyone involved.. I used to be an avid gamer, but I got tired of playing the same game, with a different name, over and over again.

Knowing that the only thing you were going to get was slightly better graphics and a shakier camera.
The graphics quality plateaued years ago, just barrely squeaking out slight improvments over past titles. And, even though technology has far surpased the slim specs of existing consoles, we haven't seen a leap in development quality because companies like Microsoft and Sony are stifling innovation, so they can push an outdated ecosystem and leverage money saving, cloud based content distribution, over physical media, that relies on a broadband infastructure that is not yet capable of supporting the greater file sizes and download speeds necissary for such content.

Meaning that the last thing you are left with is a shakier camera, and ever devolving language content and grammar(and I am bad at both, that says something right there good people) over story. We need far more variety-diversity in the gaming industry than we currenly have. It is frieghtening to watch what has happened in the game development world today. Just a decade ago we had hundreds if not thousands of software companies involved in serious game development (come on folks, admit it, as fun as they are, cellphones games just aren't serious games yet), now we have a half dozen major gaming corporations doing almost all of the game development.

At one time, in the far away land of the 1990's, there used to be somewhere close to 20 companies into the development of graphics hardware and systems, now there is three major contendors in console development and graphics hardware design and implemintation.

I could go on about these issues and the far reaching impact on end user experience, content rights and hardware development for days, but for the last 2 people that actually made it this far in to this drawn out idiosentric rant, I am going to end with this last statment.

I am hoping that there is some bastian of game development left out there somewhere in the world willing to push the boundries of gaming far past the tired old genre specific platforms we see today. We need a company, a development studio and a hardware developer willing to push the envelope and keep these big corporations on their feet. They are too willing to tread water in the same puddle for as long as possible, relying on tried and true development and sales models, scared to take any chances, for as long as consumers allow it. It is time for a new cycle of development, a new round of gaming riding the razors edge of imagination. I know I am ready, how about all of you?

How is sony mishandling vita? The vita doesn't even have 6 months yet ignorant people like you just like to bash on it like it was doomed. Don't you want to wait at least until e3 where they will announce a ton of games for it and a possible price cut (wich they will definitely aplly it until the end of the year) before you say those things? As far as i know the 3ds didin't start off that strong too yet it is doing very well right now. Why is the vita that different? Sony doesn't have the amount of leeway nintendo has? What's that supposed to mean? As long as they make great games for it, and the sort out the price of the vita and the accessories for it, it will do great. Let's see what you'll say in a year from now...

Check the 3DS' sales and when they turn profit lightning will likely strike for the 3rd time. Actually sony has lost around 60 points of stock and their stock is now at Nintendo's level. That is not good for a larger company. Sony is in a lot of trouble like it or not. Nintendo once again didnt lose as much as forecasted and could stand to take that loss 30 more times with their reserves. They are not in trouble. If you havent noticed the big N has been making huge efforts to better their online service, market ro hardcore gamers (something the wii had but people ignored), Wii U has a controller that resembles a tablet it isnt tablet centered. Sadly most cannot afford a IPad only to have to buy another one in a year. Also out of 100+ million Wii owners if only half of those return and then we add the newcomers that commonsense say are gonna come we can assume the Wii U will do well. Not as well as the Wii though. The ios and android market doesnt consist of as many Wii owners as people think

This is just dumb. Nintendo has made more $$ then Sony in the last 5 years. Just last year Nintendo was a trillion dollar company, while Sony was a billion dollar company. Nintendo loses a large sum of money ONE time, big deal. They can bounce back very easy. They only lost money because handhelds aren't worth $250. Just look at the Sony Vita poor sales. Sony is losing money too. They have lost tons. Get real... He's obviously a Sony fanboy.
