I am pretty sure that a majority of the Netflix "defections" were goaded into it by the negative media coverage of the company rather than innate dissatisfaction. They still have a good brand and their streaming service and U/I are the best in the biz by a wide margin. Go ahead and bet against them; I'm always looking to buy some more shares at bargain prices.

No, the biggest losers were the DVD subs who didn't want to start paying for what streaming subs had been paying for all along, and who then decided to cancel their Netflix subscriptions entirely claiming "Unfair!". There's an old saying: "cut off your nose to spite your face" ...appropriate here. (Funnier since they actually got a $2 cut on that DVD subscription.) Though, yeah, the Qwikster (did I get the spelling right this time?) plan never looked anything but stupid.

One thing that you forgot to mention the price hike that came only a few months before the seconded one. The only think that keeping Netflixafloat right now is their limited streaming library.

Should Cable Co. offer a comparable over-the-top solution, they're toast.

It would have been ok to gradually raise subscription costs but to double them, separate services and add complexity in an assualt on its subscriber base is like taking the cheese out of the pizza, charging double for it and asking customers to buy their mozzerella separately from their crust from a differnt cash register after appling for credit first..

I agree that Netflix is the super loser of the year.RIM is the "Loser of the Month" every month of the year as they.sell amartphones that continue to offer less than the competition. (selling high powered go carts in a world filled with automobiles)

Netflix is a good choice - its missteps are certainly shocking given how well positioned it was when the year started. (On a personal note, I also cut back my spend with Netflix by half.) RIM is your runner up? RIM has certainly struggled - though it is one of the few handset vendors that is actually profitable and RIM is growing nicely in emerging markets. But if you want to talk epic failure, HP simply has to be on the list.

I never used DVD, do not care about qwickster, ready to pay more for more uptodate content. those CDs you have to wait till they come by mail or get your butt to a a store. WHY? WHY? I would better pay AMAZON on demand or Vudu or Zune or ... or .... three dollars than stuck in traffic to get my movie.

Man, splitting the service like that was a stupid idea. I only had streaming, so it didn't affect me. If they can merge both streaming and DVD rental into a discounted rate, it would appease customers.

Absolutely agree. I'm one of the reported 900,000 or so (for the last quarter) that cancelled Netflix-- the day before the rate hike went into effect. I don't regret it...but I do miss Netflix a little. I may eventually go back, but the content was getting stale. Maybe it will be a bit fresher after my hiatus...however long that may be.
