I have all three systems. My kids play games on all three systems. The Wii technology is dated and the newer Kinect and Move systems are newer and more accurate... Wow you mean newer technology is better than old technology.

Each console serves a purpose, entertainment. If you aren't entertained by it then don't use it.

What a load of pucky.

I feel like that's who the Wii appeals to. Children. It seems like every other game is a children's franchise game, a mini-game compilation, or something with Mario.

That being said, I'm so mad that I have a Wii and none of the other next gen consoles because I've missed out on so many great games from PS3 and Xbox. At this point I may as well wait until the new systems come out though. Can't be too long.

I agree with the author of this article 100% and then some. I had been getting 2-4 emails a month from netflix begging me to join again at a huge discount so that evening, i went home and signed up for the trial and got netflix configured. WOW i love the interface, Movie Recommendations based on Genres based on movie ratings i've submitted! but ALL of it is available by searching/browsing with the WII!!! I Own 4 Wii controls/Nunchucks, all with the rechargeable batteries and I ended up ripping out batteries from another remote control temporarily so i could use the wii right away! I mention this because the batteries had all died off as they sat there for SO LONG, MONTHS and MONTHS My wii has probably seen 24-32 hours of TOTAL running time and my game collection is 14 games deep (I think this is above the average). I've continuously tried to keep entertained but we've gone in bursts of extensive game play for a couple days after purchasing a new title and then forgetting about it. i Love this thing, it is the ONLY console i've played or own (I have literally never touched a PS3 remote and the only time i've touched an XBOX was to help a client connect to a wireless network) The last Console i've played/owned is the 16-Bit Super Nintendo! because IMHO nothing compares to a PC for gaming.
Unfortunately Nintendo has stuck their noses up in the air watching month after month their Wii sales significantly larger and seemingly unaffected by the Recession. Everyone else is trying to better themselves, Xbox Kinect and whatever the Wii-TATION for PS3 is called. The big 2 have answered the call and Nintendo decides not to follow suit in Price Cuts (Yes it was already and remains cheaper) but they are doing NOTING? i mean WHAT GIVES? Instead of releasing a Black Version of the Wii, why not get a bump in performance or SOMETHING?? Lets put in a better CPU, a Graphics Card, Add More Display options, HDMI/Display Port and Support 1080P so at the very least people could use the Wii for DVD's (Preferably BlueRay) Hell make a smaller version of the same thing. How about making a RAM Drive for the Disc, so once you put in a disc, the entire contents are loaded into system memory (i would love to have an option to RIP Discs to local storage but understand the reasons they don't) A BIG part of the fascination with WII is the simplicity of the games, they aren't trying to make the most realistic this and that and i LOVE the cartoon characters! They can increase the raw horsepower under the hood without HAVING to change the logic behind the games. Obviously My wife and I, (a typical woman, not hardcore into gaming, and A 28 year old Network Engineer working 45-50 hrs/week) are having troubles keeping entertained with games, so increase the power simply for the POWER/possibility of programmers to make more intense games or make it a multi purpose machine!
I just BEG/HOPE/PRAY that Nintendo keeps 100% Backward Compatability if changes are made

@Overkill... I couldn't agree more- very well put. I too have been trying to justify our Wii for years now.

Soon after it came out we literally bought and sold the Wii 4 times in one year. Just kept getting tired of it, selling it, then wanting it back for some reason (maybe out of guilt, or hope that good games would come to it, or when a new Mario or other decent game was due out).

At this point I give up and just accept that it's really only meant for the drunken Wii bowling nights with friends.

I agree with this article.
I owned a Wii pretty much from the start (about 1 month before Christmas the release year, not an easy feat at all).
I brought up any of the "unique" Wii games from the off, but they all felt like reworks of older titles.

I could list them and give you why they felt like reworks, but anyone who has played Nintendo games since the days of the NES will know.

Anyway the Wii was brought as a family present, but unlike being the life of the party it was more like the woolly jumper from the aunt. It sat gathering dust until I decided to sell it and purchase some fishing gear, which unlike the Wii seems to have lasted its course and been used much more.

The last game which kept me playing on the Wii was ironically Super Mario Bros (the original) on its build in emulator.

In short the Wii was a over hyped fade

Funny...I just put my Wii on Ebay today...and yes it was pretty dusty. I only use the PS3 anymore whether it's games, movies, or music. The last Wii game I enjoyed was the God Father a few years ago (the strangling gesture was hilarious wasn't it?) Maybe I'm tired of bright colored and/or low resolution graphics. If they released a Wii HD and more dark/serious/realistic games, I might be interested again..

I have an Xbox 360 already and I play it a thousand times more often then I do my Wii.

I'm 20 so don't tell me to grow up. No I'm not mentally impaired. Yes I have a job.

And as a last thought, if Wii is such a piece of crap why are Sony and Microsoft copying it? And I don't mean they gave their systems motion controls. I mean they are giving their systems motion controls, advertising them as being "family fun", and loading them with craploads of shit games. Either Wii isn't as bad as you said or Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are just as crappy.

Either way please think before you write your next comment.

This vibe in this article isn't that new (as the author themselves notes), but I totally agree with it - I traded my Wii two weeks ago, after I realised I hadn't used it in six months, because unless you like first-party Ninty games (which I don't - I find their game design stuck in the late 90s, which is great for retro, but I can have retro _and_ modern gaming on the HD platforms - PS3 is my choice) there really isn't much on Wii that isn't done better on PS3. And after trying Sports Champions, it was _very_ hard to go back to Wii Sports Resort.

Of course, if you're a huge Mario, Zelda, Samus, DK or Kirby fan, then the Wii still does it's job fine - it's (like the author says) a valid entertainment option. I just find that, personally, it's limited relative to what the PS3 offers.

Of course, if you’re a huge Mario, Zelda, Samus, DK or Kirby fan, then the Wii still does it’s job fine – it’s (like the author says) a valid entertainment option. I just find that, personally, it’s limited relative to what the PS3 offers.

If Nintendo would put an alarm clock feature in the Wii, that might make people use it more.

Imagine that, the Wii only final viable feature is that of an alarm clock.

And that's fine, because the majority of Nintendo fans have the mind of a 4 year old anyway. So it all works out in the end.

You go have fun now with all those retro games with the 4 buttons. They were fun because that was all anyone knew back then. If you wish to live in the past, that is your choice and I respect that. But claiming time was better than today in gaming or tomorrow is patently incorrect. You sound like Dana Carvey on SNL doing his elderly skit saying "... back in my day, we didn't have no ...." Though, as a Nintendo fan, it is unlikely you are allowed to stay up late enough to watch SNL.

Folks, face it. The Wii IS a toy and WAS a fad. The Pet Rock effect is starting to wear off now and people are stuck with a toy that barely has an online experience, has horrible 480i graphics (out of the box) and endless shovelware for games. Games like Super Baby Mama, Rachel Ray's Cookoff and Happy Donkey Checkerz, seriously?

Amazing how nearly all Wii games go from the $49.99 entry point to the $3.00 bargain bin in one month. That should tell you something.

"Itza me, Mario" -> that phrase right there should say it all....

Enough. The RRoD thing is so old now. Stop clinging to that merely because you have nothing other to say. The 360 is outselling the PS3 and Wii now.

Oh, wait. I here your mom calling. Time for that trip to the zoo with the rest of your 1st grade class. But relax, it's not like the Nintendo online experience is going to improve at all while your out at the Petting Zoo. It will still be lame when you get back.

Enjoy!

PS: Careful, animals at the zoo bite!

I have been a gamer since the Atari 2600 days, and I am also an avid video game collector. After reading this article, I totally agree with it. I've had a Wii since launch, I have tried many games to justify the Wiis existence in the console wars. I own the Super Mario Galaxies, Twilight Princess, Metroid Other M, and all the other major titles. When I have an hour to sit down and play a game, and I look at my game library and I look at my Wii games compared to my XBOX and PS3 collection, the decision to play Super Mario Galaxy compared to playing something like Mass Effect 2, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Bad Company 2, Heavy Rain, Dragon Age, Fallout 3 or even New Vegas, playing something where I gotta be waving my arms at the screen and not being drawn into the storyline and gameplay is not worth my time. NOW, saying that, I understand the Wii in it's role in the consoles. It's not in my eyes, a HARDCORE gamer system, it's a casual gamer console. One designed to be picked up, screwed with for am hour and turned off. Something Grandparents can play with their grand kids, NOT for the player who hit Prestige 10 and level 50 in Black Ops in a week. My Point is the Wii is a great console in the marketplace it's designed for..the Casual Gamer....like the guy who likes Muramasa Demon Blade, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Samurai Warriors 3, Dragon Quest Swords, Wario Land Shake it! games.....which are probably the worst franchises EVER...like the Dynasty Warriors series, no serious HARDCORE gamer would even look at these titles in a $2 budget bin at Wal-mart let alone pay full price for em. Much like the Wii, meant for Casual Gamers, grandparents and kids, the XBOX and PS3 and even PC are meant for the HARDCORE gamer, someone who takes gaming seriously, someone who reads the reviews, does they're research and read the news on games, like the Supreme Court hearing in LA on video game vilonce and the such. The software companies who make games for these consoles write storylines for these consoles so awesome that is they were movies they would win awards, like the Storyline in Mass Effect, or Heavy Rain, or Metal Gear Solid 4....awesome storylines. Storyline in Mario Galaxy....Bowser kidnaps Princess, Mario does a couple levels to grab stars, collect enough stars..fighter Bowser, Hurt Bowser, rescue Princess...wow. Storyline in Metal Gear Solid 4......Snake's twin brother Liquid has a plan to takes control of the world's armies through a government built computer system that control's the solders through genomes injected into the solder to maximize his/her efficency. If Liquid gains control, he will control the world armies, the war economy, and control the Patroits which secretly control the world already since the end of World war II. Now you tell me....which game sounds more interesting to play??

At 17, you are still a child in the eyes of the law. Incapable of making your own decisions, other than to take drugs, drink and fail out of school. Which your generation does far too much of. But once you hit 18, you are legally an adult. At which point, you can then make the decision to purchase a mature, adult and modern console. PS3 or 360, doesn't really matter. And then you can box up the toy (Wii), take your thumb out of your mouth, throw away your "blanky" and join adult gamers on the PS3/360 online communities.

I am not sure why you are on this site either. It requires some level of reading ability, thinking and then some writing skills. Nintendo fans usually possess none of these qualities. They instead gravitate to sites with flashy colors and Mario 8-bit icons. "Oh, Mario Uber Duper Galaxy 17 is out next week!" Wow. Who cares. That stuff was fun when you were 5 years old. 12 years later, your parents need to have an intervention and ween you from the Mario nipple. That potty training should have taken place years ago, to be honest.

Good luck to you though.

I'm 17 and have balls enough to admit I enjoy Nintendo games. Apparently you are the sad type of person who resorts to name calling just because youre probably too old and jaded to enjoy a simple videogame for what it is, a game! And BTW I do own a 360 as well as a Wii.

Sorry, should I go boot up my 360 and play a FPS so I can blow stuff up and prove I'm such a manly man? God this site is a joke, I don't even know why I waste my time >_>

Seriously? Donkey Kong? Another kiddie game meant for 3-year olds. Please, please grow up and get a mature, man's console. Grow a pair, put down your teddy pair, take off your panties and remove the pink Mario shirt. Pickup a 360 or PS3 and get your game on!

Someone needs to Brut Slap you pal:

Nintendo is in the Guiness Book of World Records for selling the most consoles that no one uses anymore. Quite an accomplishment actually. You need to:

1. Make a console today using technology from yesterday.
2. Add a gimmicky control scheme that uses canned animations to simulate 3d controls.
3. Open up the floodgates of "Shovelware" (i.e. endless crap games).
4. Churn out endless Mario and Donkey Kong games.

Nintendo dug their own grave, and now they are slowly lying down in it as the industry starts shoveling the dirt on top of them. Time for Nintendo to bow out and join SEGA as purely a game making company.

Leave the console making and 1st person studio productions to the big boys. Microsoft and Sony are the only two left who deserve to be making consoles and providing enjoyment to the next generation of gamers.

Wow seriously? Author is a "gamer" and doesn't recognize that the Wii probably had it's best year in 2010.

And he mentions the Move as one of the reasons for his interest in Wii? Okay, what are you currently playing on Move, Sports Champions?

I have some advice for all gamers out there. Get over yourselves and your perceived notions of "mature" games, because the Wii has a solid game library that can go toe to toe with the HD consoles. Just because the Wii can't push Black Ops, Halo, etc. to your liking doesn't mean it doesn't have its own great games. Nintendo has always been about classic games and classic gameplay.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pick up Donkey Kong Country Returns ;)

The Wii is a childs toy. Plain and simple. Little kids and senior citizens buy the Wii to wave their arms around and laugh. Nearly all Wii owners cannot read or write, since they are either too young and have not yet learned (i.e. 70 years old).

The argument by some tard above me in the comments about how the Wii has sold so many consoles is absurd. The Pet Rock sold millions too. Until everyone realized that it was a fad and a hoax.

Go buy a PS3 or an XBOX 360. You can still redeem yourself.....there is still time.
