I got a kinect hooked up to my pc right now and I can do things with it you wouldn't believe...I still can't believe some of it. I can turn my coffee table into a multi touch screen, I am working on a record store install which will be using a kinect as a means to turn the exterior glass window of the shop into a touch screen using rear projected content

Besides that I can also have it track a bunch of points on my body including my hands, head, neck, etc and then feed that data into a program to control whatever I want.....whether it be randomly appearing shapes coming off of my hand or a whole 3d character (haven't figured out the latter yet).

The depth sensor can spit out an exact location of my right hand at 30 fps as I dance around the room
x..9835 y.2586 z 2.3588

There is also a project currently being conducted by college students which is using the kinect and modifying it so that blind people can wear it on their body and essentially be able to 'see' obstacles in front of them.

It's the next big thing peiod...not just in gaming. I would also have to agree that the writer of this article needs to climb outside of his little coffee shop.

The Kinect is the new thing in gaming, it doesn't mean it will be fully impremented in everysingle game, But it does mean that developers will be able to create more intereactive gaming with sacrificing traditional gaming features, like a conroller. No one is stupid, I think microsoft understands that controllers are the way to go, but there are gaps in just using a conroller that are just too stagnit. It would be so much more full of a gaming experience if gamers had more beacons of symontanious conrol, like speech, motion. I mean, how would you like to actually throw a Frag grenade while playing with a controller, or bringing up the scoreboud just by saying "scorebouard" rather than stopping midgame

I don't think anyone is considering the "Kinect Potential Effect", its more than just petting/naming a baby tiger. Maybe conroller gameplay would become more interactive. Consider being able to communicate with the story line of a game in first person with voice regognition, or being able to bring up icons like saying "Ammo" or "Supplies" to veiw things on the screen in the middle of gameplay. Or emagine a gaming chair that connects to the kinect physics and gives you a realist motion controller of a car. Or think of a more precise kinect that can track slight eye movement and adjust first person views to a more realistic view, with wider perifiel viewing, so that you can look to your right without moving you gun or whatnot

To think motion gaming is holding the industry back is just means you don't understand the industry. Anything that brings something new to the table for gaming, whether good or bad, helps push the industry in the right direction. If you've ever seen Iron Man 1 or 2, you can't sit there and lie and say you wouldn't want to have a badass computer like that. All Microsoft is trying to do is make that possible.

Everyone wants to be able to be "in" the game, from hardcore gamers to casual gamers. Microsoft is doing a good job trying to apply this, just because Apple didn't come up with the idea doesn't mean it isn't a good one.

Okay, so, the point of the article is, "I don't like the kinect and the effect that it'll have on gaming."

- exactly what effect does the author think it'll have on gaming? It's kind of an important point, and I don't see it being addressed.
- what are the author's reasons for saying that this effect will be bad for gaming? Oh, it's "gimmicky." ...and how is that opinion justified? It's not. Again, kind of important to justify your opinion in an opinion piece.

OMG. Seriously?

A MAC owner, that is also a gamer (what's up with that oxymoron?!), thinks that motion based gaming is holding gaming back?! And then gives ZERO arguments for it.

It just makes no sense. It can only advance it, there is no reason and no way it can hold it back. Innovation never holds things back.

And not to think how awesome would it be to use kinect for some mundane tasks on a computer, like browsing, scrolling, switching pages, media playback controls..

Too bad that the casual market is larger and will dictate how consoles are built from now on. They (the console makers) care about sales not quality experience.

I think that the PS3 Move would actually be viable controller if it was tweaked just a bit.

Use IR lights that blink in a pattern rather than visible colors. Also... 2 ... repeat 2 control sticks.

Mapping aiming and turning to the motion control is just dumb. It sucked on the Wii and it sucked on the Move.

Just use the motion control to aim at points on the screen, maybe a few other contextual actions, and the control sticks for all movement like current controllers.
