In my opinion, he's just keeping it real.

I love the iPad, and bought 3! For my mom, my grandma and 8 year old nephew.

But they're all "technology challenged". I'm not, and really prefer more options, power and functionality.

Guess it all depends on your capabilities and personal preference.

I'm sorry you don't like iTunes. I genuinely understand your complaints, but I must point out that it's one of the most popular pieces of software in the world, so it isn't the albatross you seem to think it is. Are there people who dislike iTunes so much that they will prefer rival tablets? Yes. They don't appear to constitute anywhere near as large a market as the iTunes-is-OK (or great) contingent. In addition, the digital store it contains has given Apple a competitive advantage that its rivals still have not matched.

In terms of your second complaint, I agree with you, which is why I didn't include that factor in my column. That was the whole point of my comment above. Re-read my column/comment. You disagree with Tim, not me.

It is new and it is unproven. I have a XOOM, and apps from the Market crash fairly consistently. However, I do agree that the Android ecosystem is strong, and apps will be updated to support Honeycomb in fairly short order. But if you're willing to give Google and Motorola a pass because you trust that the issues will be addressed in the near future - and I'd back you on that - you also have to give Apple a pass on relatively little new in OS 4.3, because they will almost certainly announce OS 5.0 in the next few months.

I don't know the exact market situation in US or Asia, but in Europe the main reason for Apple's victory run in tablet market is that since the launch of the original iPad it really has been the only alternative to consider. All other tablets have so far been pure vaporware. Well ok, Samsung got their Galaxy Tab out and priced it so sky high that even seagulls laughed.

And as the situation seems to be exactly the same for time being, ".. but with dozens and dozens of options hitting the market over the next few months..", there's no visible ending for Apple's cash flow.

Nice attempt to deflect a really poor design with a "fanboi" attack. Straight out Fandroid FAIL. When you cannot argue based on merits, call the other person a fanboi.

All you have to do is Google "sd card busy android" and find this is a common issue with Android that perplexes lots and lots of users. Due to the pi$$ poor implementation Google choose this will happen; only a single device can be talking to the SD card at one time. Either the handset or the computer. It does not dual mount the file system to both a computer and Android over USB. If you have a file open on one device and try to mount the SD card from another device, the mount will fail. I have also had the mounting just "work" but then the software that had the open file handle looses access to the data. If the error handling is not done correctly, that app can puke.

This happens to me much more than it should when using Android. It is a simple example of really poor design that is all too common in Android. Every time I use it, it is like stepping back into the 90's.

BTW: To move files back and forth on iOS, I use products from Hyperdrive.

It's not fail when i need to copy a random file, and use my device as a pseudo zip drive. How do you save an EXE or zip file to your idevice?

I've never seen this issue with unmounting my sd card as well, and i've been moving files back and forth many times a day for years over several devices.

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of Apple. I hate being stuck with iTunes; I want to drag and drop my content onto my device. Period. I don't like that I can't get Flash content- and yes, I run into an issue with that on a daily basis. I also like WIDGETS, to give me a glance at a news ticker; the weather; stocks; battery, signal strength, etcetera - all on my home page. Apple should give us that much, at least. Next to Android of ANY version, iOS looks like yesterdays news. At least in the interface. Ironically, the iEverything interface is the main draw in the eye-candy department. Let's face it; it's pretty sexy. All rounded fonts and uniform icon graphics. The whole "bouncy" thing when you scroll... that's hot. And the LED backlight making things really pop. I played with a Xoom for quite awhile yesterday, then kept going back and forth to the iPad. Hate to say it; but the iPad was a far better experience. Maybe the demo for the Xoom needs a LOT of polishing to make it look like something cohesive, because as it is, its just... interesting.

Personally, I think the WebTab, or whatever they call the WebOs HP thingy, has a real shot at taking the reigns here, if they can tap into the best of both worlds. An Apple-like user experience - which WebOS seems to offer - plus an openness for allowing USB and drag/drop and Flash. Along with good battery life. If they partner with Amazon, they could put together very compelling iTunes alternative for downloaded content, and, they could even front an App Store with "certified" apps, like the App Store. Apps written to a design spec, but not the Nazi-like control freaks at Apple. HP could be the dark horse here. Hopefully, they don't screw it up. RIM? Meh. Boring corporate crap. The last thing I want to do is be reminded of work.

If they partner with Amazon, they could put together very compelling iTunes alternative for downloaded content, and, they could even front an App Store with “certified” apps, like the App Store. Apps written to a design spec, but not the Nazi-like control freaks at Apple. HP could be the dark horse here. Hopefully, they don’t screw it up. RIM? Meh. Boring corporate crap. The last thing I want to do is be reminded of work.

You need to understand the reason why Android phones outsell iphones. One of the most important reason is the price, that android phones are cheaper (by average) than iphones, and the second important reason is that android phones are available from more cellular carriers. I guess there are more reasons less important.

Now, you can take Android tabs and see if these reasons apply. I don't see either reason applies to the ipad/Android-tab case.

If wifi-only Xoom is at $400, you will get one reason back and then we can talk.

So this is the challenge that Android faces. When you need to hack a device to run the OS, and then find various applications to install, Apple wins. Right now, from a general consumer's perspective, one would only not buy an iPad for two reasons: price and carrier. I have a 7 inch Tab, and find the form factor too small, except for use as a GPS. Too close to size as my 4.3" phone, but less portable. As the article states, Android needs to differentiate by working with the enterprise market. They are currently doing a very poor job in this aspect. The rushing of releases to market has to stop. Honeycomb is a great example. This is a split in the codebase between tablets and phones. There will be a stop-gap honeycomb release for phones shortly, but it is not the same codebase as the tablet. In approximately six months, the codebase will merge in a new release. Most of the phones in use today does not even run 2.3. The enterprise market will not accept this type of approach.

It has little to do with "hand holding". It has every thing to do with a complete experience and a final product. The geeks of the world actually think Android has caught up with iOS in overall "experience" and, having used both lots, Android is not even close. The reason they think this is they have no issue with random errors and glitch after glitch when doing something as simple as transferring media.

Even the Xoom suffers from random pauses and stutters. Not as bad but it does it much more than it should for a "completed" product.

Mounting and un-mounting devices to move files is so 1990's. Time to change a decade or so.

But then, getting errors like "micro-SD busy" in non-related apps and other apps simply puking as the SD card gets unmounted from Android to the PC is simply a pain. Or some apps not giving up control of the SD card so you can't get the %$#%# thing to mount to do a drag and drop. And then keeping additions in sync when you buy some on the PC and some on the Device.

Even cameras have this implemented 100X better than the lame programmers on Android. That, and most OSes actually recognize a camera being plugged in and you never ever do drag and drop from the camera to computer through the file system.

Yep. Device mount with file Drag and Drop for media files is a FAIL out of the gate.

From a performance standpoint, the A5 has about 2 to 2.5X on GPU power. They have roughly the same performance for CPU being both Cortex-A9 dual core based.

So yes, to the Android Spec weenies, every Tegra 2 tablet has been outclassed until the new Snapdragons start showing up.

As for keeping files and media in sync on Android devices. It is a RPITA when compared to using a Zune or iPod. From having drivers installed (on Droid X and Incredible both with 2.2) to having that $%## Verizon Web Page always load when you plug in your device to album art being much more miss than hit to obscure errors like "micro SD busy" and then having the media player and other apps puke to keeping additions in sync depending on if you added from your computer or added on the device....

If you have to mount and unmount devices to move media, you just don't get it and have already designed it wrong.

Getting media on and off of an Android device, while doable, is far from being a smooth and easy processes. Google has tons and tones of work to do in that area.

I resent the way you took time to answer to comments in this thread, but only selected those who you found convenient. For example, you answered to a person who directly insulted you, thereby acknowledging you are ready to get on their level, but you ignored my (and that of many others) justified resentment of iTunes which invalidated a major point in your original article.

Also, how does the fact that several companies have the capacity to internally supply themselves with components still leave the advantage with Apple? This just doesn't make sense. If you had a drop of honesty in your mind your last sentence above would have been: "No, but exclusivity agreements might help Apple to be able to keep up."
