It's not about the games! I'm a 35year old guy. I've got a wife and three kids. The reason I own an Xbox still is because of the extra content. The Netflix, Microsoft videos, Microsoft music etc. it's the forward thinking of the company that keeps me. I've long since lost the free time to play the games like I used to but sitting down with the family to watch a movie on Xbox, or play a quick game with my son or listen to music with my daughter is what will have me buying the 720 when it comes out. I can't wait to see what else Microsoft can bring into my living space through the little box that could. Everything they try isn't gold, but the fact that they are still trying new tuff vice resting on their laurels is proof to me that I need to buy the next one when it comes.

*shrugs* I'm not a gamer, not by any means. Having played video games for years, I really don't like most. I get so damn bored. That said, I prefer Xbox. Xbox has Halo, windows, and Live. I won't say it's BETTER than PS3, just that it's better for me. The controllers are more comfortable and again, it being windows is just a huge plus for me. Not to mention that Alex Hatzopoulos below me made every technical argument needed. I do enjoy the PS3, but not enough to actually buy one.

Again, I'm not a gamer. At all. I play Halo, Star Wars, Batman, and a few other games here and there. It's just tough for me to get into video games usually, especially the old Nintendo games blah. Boring, yet filled with nostalgia for so many. I'd rather read a book than play most games.

I'm gonna call BS on that, of all of the games you listed on PS3 almost none of them even remotely interest me, God of War was fun enough for me to borrow a PS from a buddy, and I played it for about an hour, and never had a desire to pick it up again. The ONLY game that has made me want to even SLIGHTLY wish I had a PS3 was infamous. The issue that you're failing to notice is out of all of the games you listed as PS3 exclusives, how many have much if any multiplayer?

XBOX has been hugely successful because multiplayer games introduce a longevity to games that PS3 apparently doesn't focus on. Once you beat a single player / story game, how often do you go back and play it again? For most people, I'd say quite rarely.

Also, I don't even own CoD or Halo, but I have about half of the other games listed by Alex Baldwin.

The main reason I refuse to buy a PS3 is because that branch of Sony is a TERRIBLE company. They make some of the crappiest hardware (worked for a company that took in consoles for repair, and the number of PS2s that were brought in was about 10x more than Xbox / Gamecube combined), and have some of the worst programmers ever (how the hell do you even remotely let storing passwords in plaintext slip through to production?). I remember when the PSP came out they knowingly shipped the system with a defect that would cause one of the buttons to stop working because it was too close to the screen, and they didn't do anything about it.

OK, granted Xbox360 is a game machine but.. that's not the primary reason I use it. My wife has a Roku (actually she has two... in different rooms) but I prefer to use my Xbox to do pretty much the same thing. Xbox has been a leader in making the Xbox a "all around" console and has multiple uses aside from just playing games. In addition to using it to surf the web and check my Facebook I also use it to access my media center PC to play music and display family pictures when I'm in the mood for that type of thing.
There's more to it than the games that available or what's perceived to
be 'popular' or the number of Live accounts taht are active. MS has been
going crazy the last few years getting Xbox's in people's hands with
insane deals such as 'FREE XBOX WITH PURCHASE OF A LAPTOP' through Dell,
HP and others as well as general sales at certain times of the year
that get the console into people's hands at really cheap prices. I never
really had an interest in buying an Xbox (as we're typically Wii
people), but when it came time to get a new laptop two years ago for my
wife while she was in school, it was a no-brainer to get one that
included the completely free Xbox. We play it every now an then and
bought some games for it, but it's still not the most played console in
our house. For a long while there it was not being used for anything
other than Netflix. I'm sure though that my Live account (which is kept
up by those semi-annual $35 1-year live cards you get on ebay and
bestbuy from time to time), console "purchase" and the few games I've
picked up are counting towards the perceived success of Xbox.

Bottom
line is, I think the numbers showing the success of the Xbox over the
last 24 months are a bit inflated as it's being used under the
assumption that the Xbox has somehow gotten more popular, when the
reality is that Microsoft has been using extreme marketing techniques to
get the console into more people's hands than normal. Had I not been
given one with the purchase of a laptop I was going to buy anyway, then I
wouldn't be counting toward this "success".

well all I have to say is I have both. the first xbox 360 I got was in 2007. then I got a ps3 in 2010. they both work fine. but the thing is I was a straight xbox fanboy. so I did not care a bout the ps3. I started to talk about the bad things like no cross game chat or u cant install games. then say Xbox live is better. but now I realized that the ps3 is not bad at all. you can download movies. it has Bluray. I changed from being a Xbox fan boy and stuff. I know ps3 and Xbox 360 is good. Microsoft and Sony both lost money from doing their systems. Xbox Fan boys and ps3 Fan boys only talk about the bad parts about the systems and its not right. u guys act like Microsoft and Sony never did anything as partners. look at Sony laptops they run on Microsoft windows! we all now that the Xbox 360 back then was a system built in bad which caused the red ring of death Because Microsoft wanted to rush their console out there to beat Sony instead of working on the hardware. Microsoft really did not make any hardware they are good at software! Its the other way around with Sony they are good at making the best hardware!! but has trouble with some Software that Microsoft could do perfectly. for example like cross game chat. ps3 cant do it because of the ram. Xbox could do it because of Microsoft is good at software. Don't get me wrong ps3 got yellow light of death. but only when they started to mess up on the consoles when making them. Then another thing about console life spans. we don't know when its going to break. with the new Xbox 360 it has better cooling and thing like the ps3. but one thing u should do is take care of it. if you take care of it. it wont break! consoles don't have no lifespans! it depends how u take care of it not nobody else. I still have my Xbox 360 from 2007 still working but now I got a new Xbox in 2012 because I gave my other one to my cousin. ok XBL is better then PSN because of some of the additional features. PSN has a stronger exclusive library of games. we don't like paying for XBL but we have to because it holds more features. PSN people doesn't like waiting for DLC for games like black ops 2. but they have to because Microsoft has a contract with Activision so they can get them first. that's why. Im not eithers fan boy Im just saying they both went through hell. I have both an xbox 360 slim and a ps3 slim

It may be petty ( the word petty perfectly describing why Sony dominates everywhere else BUT the U.S) But in my eyes Sony's loses come down to two factors. The beauty that is Microsoft's dashboard UI ultimately creating an amazing ecosystem with "ecosystem" being the word of 2012 and is not slowing down anytime soon. And MOST IMPORTANTLY the controller. I swear to you not the controller is the single reason why I prefer to play black ops on my xbox and not my ps3 it feels amazing in the hand and Sony was just plain lazy. In all other aspects I prefer the ps3 and I hope Sony gets back to making the ps4 a home entertainment device like the ps3 was originally intended for .

Simple. I've worked in the video game industry for years. The same reason that Macs have high sales numbers is the secret to the 360's success; poor/cheap craftsmanship. I know a number of people who are on their 3rd, 5th, even 10th 360, because the previous one broke (or they NEED one in the living room AND the bedroom). Granted, the slim model holds up much better than the predecessor, but all the same, many people who own a 360 have had multiple. And before people get their panties in a wad, no, not everyone is on a replacement, and no, I don't think that 360s (or Macs, for that matter) are inferior, stupid, or bad. They are just made cheaply, as is the intent if you are a company with interest on the bottom line. The primary difference being that Microsoft makes more money from its "premium" online services (which truly is no better [minus playing music and gaming at the same time, a personal favorite feature], but rather a simple psychology trick, if you have to pay you are more likely to take advantage of all services and therefor "enjoy" more, same reason as why movie theater popcorn tastes better) and other software related properties; Apple just charges more for their name.

I will say that, as a gamer, there are not many good RPGs, platformers, or frankly any other genre than FPS on the 360, but in the realm of FPS, Microsoft rules supreme. And America is, guess what, obsessed with FPS, generally speaking. Not necessarily a good or bad thing, but our culture does revolve pretty heavily on guns and shooting, so of course the system with the best guns and shooting is going to do better.

And while the people who may play FPS (and yes Gears is a third-person, but I lump it together with Halo and COD anyway) play longer, they are not what I would consider a hardcore gamer. That's like saying someone who only watches action films is a movie buff/connoisseur. Sure they may be passionate, and are well versed in what they know, but to me at least, a hardcore gamer plays more titles than Halo, COD, Gears, and maybe Madden. A hardcore gamer plays EVERYTHING, from FPS (Halo, COD) to RPG (Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Dark Souls) and platformer (Mario, Jak and Daxter), and everything else in between. As such, most hardcore gamers, I've noticed, are either PC gamers, or own multiple systems/platforms.

I think it's because people generally use it like they would a 'connected' tv. Most people I know that have one Use netflix on it, connect an external hard drive with music and movies to it, and play disks like a dvd player. If you buy a tv with wifi you aren't generally browsing facebook. I think Microsoft would do well to transition the xbox into a consumer device that people other than gamers can use and appreciate. Make it seem like every person with a tv set needs one. Then you'll see used everywhere and it will leave Sony in the dust.

Iv'e never understood the allure of separate internet tv sets-they can't play games like consoles, and the console can't really do internet well either.

Microsoft doesn't care about casual gamers? Then what's the live Arcade for? What's the kinnect for? This coming release what's that secondary (cheaper) console that only plays video/music and arcade games for? No one with a brain thought the Playstation was going to "trounce" the Xbox. Talk about a bias author.

Why? Anyone remember a time when Sony & Nintendo(Japan) controlled the gaming market? Systems and big titles from them would come out first in Japan and then we(The USA) biggest gaming market. Would have t wait for up to a year for the new systems to get here and also the big titles made by them. Of course they had there excuses, from "I'm so sorry" to we have to fully test the new system out before we ship to America to it takes so long to translate the big titles from them that already been out in Japan for quite some time, etc. :)
That'a all change now! WHY? BECAUSE OF THE XBOX!!!!
You ever notice how you always here about Sony exclusives, but if you look at what HOT on both systems it's the same FPS that Xbox 360 came to be know for... not to mention they pioneer the broadband online play console.
Note: I do enjoy all gaming systems

nope, I rest my case.

I don't think people can offer great opinions about games if they don't play some of the generations best titles, and for a fact, Uncharted, and MGS: 4 are included.

I listed these two as they are exclusives. Others I could add are Dragon Age: Origins, the Mass Effect trilogy, Halo, God of War series, GTA: 4 and of course others.

If you were to work for a place like (lets hypothesize here) gameinformer, and you told them that you hadn't played any of the games I just mentioned there is no way you would get the job.

I'm just saying that you have to be diversified. Also I was pointing out that a majority of this generations masterpieces released exclusively on the PS3, and shouldn't be passed up by any gaming enthusiast.

And by the way, neither game is a button masher. If you play the games on the hardest difficulty, I bet money you will be thoroughly challenged. Just because you occasionally press a button for a sequence doesn't mean the entire game is made up of it.

Steam on PC offers all the online features XBOX offers, and more. Plus very low prices on AAA games throughout the year.

And they don't charge PC gamers to play online.

Wake up. MS has you so convinced that you NEED to pay them for a quality online experience, when nothing could be further from the truth. They are extorting money from you. Nothing more.

"Who cares? any game enthusiast. If you haven't played Uncharted and
Metal Gear Solid then you really can't call yourself well educated in
games."

So if we don't play games where developers hold our hand and tell us when "press X to win" we are not well educated in gaming?

Try again mate.

I don't mean to troll you here. But that's a pretty offensive statement.

How about the Witcher 2? Deus Ex: HR? Minecraft? EVE Online? Some pretty sophisticated games aimed at thinking people there. And very little hand holding among them.

Might want to rethink your stance there.

Do you want the REAL reason?

Marketing.

Both the XBOX and the PC are far and away inferior to the PC as gaming platforms. They lag behind PC not by one, but by many, "generations" in terms of tech. Neither can even come close to graphics, frame rates or processing power.

But Microsoft has everyone believing the XBOX is superior in terms of quality to the PS3 because they market more aggressively. No. Other. Reason exists for this. The PS3 has better graphic fidelity and more processing power than the XBOX. Sony does not extort money from people just to "allow" them to play online. The PS3 is in every way superior to the XBOX - except, it is no longer marketed.

Which would matter. If the PC were not worlds ahead of both platforms. The games are cheaper, with regulars sales throughout the year. The modular nature means we can keep a PC updated and up to date - ourselves - for years. Sure the up front cost is higher - but the benefits pay for themselves over time.

But you would never know that, thanks for the MS marketing machine.
