Broadly agree but patent-trolling is not mentioned in this article. These companies (and many others) seem to increasing be putting their efforts into halting innovation from rival manufacturers rather than their own R&D.

PS I'm interested to see where the new TV services coming to Xbox leave the fledgling Apple TV vs Google TV rivalry. Microsoft already has a huge install base and (if it works well) the Xbox, with added services, will be an attractive, multi-functional, reasonably priced option for new buyers.

Well - he has a point.

We developed "Pads" based on Linux 10 years ago. Apple's contribution has been the marketing and for once American companies are learning the lesson that the design is important, as is willingness and ability to stay competitive in technology. The iPad has a cuter user interface than the Pads we made 10 years ago. But I admit, that we did not use Windows first of all because it was not up to the technology, and secondly was not cute enough. But the iPad is cute, MS is not around, Android depends on the access to the Google site (I doubt that will make it fly on military applications) - so, throw it out the Window. Check out Active Plasma that Samsung works on.

You have to remember that Google doesn't make phones itself, and the manufacturing companies still would compete to sell more phones than the other. Also since Android is open source, developers can continuously make cooler apps.

However there is a possibility that if Android does make a monopoly, Google might start charging other manufacturing companies heavy fees for using Android while favoring Motorola in updates and ect.

Even tho I'm an Android fan, I love to see Apple doing great things with Siri and with iOS5. Why? Because Apple is in danger of being relegated to their tiny market share they enjoy in the PC market. That would be horrible for Android fans, because we'd likely see a dominant Android platform stagnate without any real competition. That's why I'm happy that iOS 5 brings so many great improvements and why I'll be happy to see an awesome iPhone 5 this summer. iOS at 25%, Android at 50% and Windows Phone at 25% is the right mix for a healthy market. Sorry RIM.

Not sure who says competition is a bad thing other than monopolies and government as neither stand to benefit. I love some Android, but this is still an open battle. The billion odd crappy to mediocre smartphones being pushed for 99 cents if you sign a contract doesn't really call the iPhones market dominance into question as being THE smartphone users will buy if they have the money. Also, I hate the apple store as much as anyone, but at least large scale devs don't have to QA an app on 200 different hardware platforms to make a truly stable Android app. There's pros and cons to both and the battle is far from over(which is good really).

The great thing about Android is that Google doesn't have to move it forward, because it's open source.
Even if Android had 100% of the market, all the manufacturers would still compete and innovate. An Android monopoly isn't a threat and would not hinder innovation (like e.g. the Windows monopoly in the late 90s/early 2000s).

Android is being used by 200 manufacturers, it's got 80% of the smartphone sales, it's got 98% of the sales in developing countries, places where people's first experience with the Internet is the smartphone.
I have to agree with you there; apple has a far more superior ability to make people want their products, no matter what they release. That is something Google will have to change; being that they do not do much marketing, they are not always in front of the eyes of consumers in a manner that causes masses of people to buy their products. They will have to market Google TV themselves, something Logitech and Sony won't ever do I do not think.

If Apple steps in they Im pretty sure some deep interface changes will come to televisions, a new approach on how we use our TVs and new things we might begin to want to use our TVs for. On the other hand Google TV is the type of product that is trying to dominate the market by default and not because consumers want it. We have to remember that Apple was the company that made consumers to want a smartphone and to want a tablet, thanks to that these two sectors developed to satisfy the demand. I believe this will be once again Apple's intent with an Apple Television.

Honestly, I do not see Apple TV being much of an issue for Google TV. That only appears to be the case right now. If the acquisition of Motorola Solutions goes through, that gives Google ownership to Motorola Set top boxes, which are predominately used by Comcast, Brighthouse, and Verizon fios I believe. I do not think ATT uverse uses Moto STBs. If that Acquisition happens, Google will immediately be able to position themselves to integrate their OS into the homes of current cable subscribes far easier. It gives them a far greater advantage over Apple if this goes through.
