this is a link bait article and a dumb argument in the comments. each device is best at something(s), and not the best for the rest. so obviously a consumer’s individual preferences, what they like to do most, the gear they already have, and the services they like to use, or already spend money on, determine which is “best” for them.

I think you make a valid point in saying that restricting streaming services to Gold customers only is pretty weak. I agree. However, so far they’ve been successful in marketing their service and it shows in sheer numbers. More than anything else I think its the convenience of connecting everything together in one place with your Live account that makes it attractive.

Like you said, you can do everything on a PC, literally everything. But you have to admit its more convenient doing things with friends on XBL. Sure I could give friends my gamertag for a PS3, Wii and PC… or I could just give them one gamertag to rule them all. A luxury to be sure but for some well worth the price. It is for me because I already have so many friends and family on XBL. Some family that are overseas or on active duty and being able to connect through Live is a blessing.

If you want a media device then buy a PS 3 which also does blu-ray and doesn’t require that stupid XBox membership.
Whats “special” about the Apple TV is the price point and ease of use. Comparing it to an XBox or any other game console is silly. You can also use an add-on software like ATV to enhance its capabilities.
Pretty obvious really.

There is still no way to justify paying for the whole package when the services are free everywhere else. You have to pay to play online when it’s free on PC, PS3, & Wii. And you have to already pay for or subscribe to a cable service that allows to use most of the features that 360 has. If they want to charge for online gaming then that’s fine for them, but to restrict all the other features like netflix, hulu, etc for XBL Gold customers only is a rip-off. If they opened it up to all XBL user than they could market the 360 as the perfect home media center.

I would agree with your statement except for the fact that you’re not paying for ONLY streaming services. You get a whole lot more than that. Try to think of it as a the whole package rather than just saying you are paying to watch Netflix which is incorrect.

I agree with your advice as well. But I will say that in no way shape or form does the Apple TV or Roku trump the Boxee except maybe by price. But the Boxee does so much more than all the devices you mentioned combined.

Sorry, but the PS3 and their full month of downtime can bite it. Xbox did online right, from the start. That’s why Sony tried to copy it as much as they could without infringing patents. For non-gamers and non-techies, Apple rules the roost with the easiest OS to use (anyone who has used an iOS device and then tried to use android, knows what I’m saying).

The thing you guys keep missing is that Xbox is a GAMING console first, and anybody who games online already, is most likely already paying for a gold membership. This makes all the other features basically free. Plus, I haven’t heard of Live ever going down for more than an hour or two as opposed to ONE MONTH of downtime *cough*Playstation*cough*.

Xbox live gold only costs about the same or less that one game a year. Plus, unlike the Playstation, there’s very little chance of a month long outage due to Microsoft’s nearly bulletproof servers.

I have both and like them both. That being said, the Xbox won’t ever replace the Apple TV because the average consumer can’t use it. Apple TV has some short-comings, but it is very easy to use and works. The Airplay turns out to be a big plus because I can use apps and websites to watch TV and then stream to the TV with Apple TV. So my Xbox becomes my (noisy) DVD player and my Apple TV becomes what I use for media consumption.

Why do you need an iPad to be part of Apple’s ecosystem? The Apple TV and the content it streams is from iTunes, presumably this makes part of the ecosystem? It also supports non-Apple streaming like Netflix. One point also missed is that the Apple TV has always done a great job of searching and organizing video podcasts too. If you’re interesting in getting XBMC on it to you can do the same as any media player on the market.

Agree totally. Not to mention power consumption, noise, and physical size. This article is really pointless. If you need a console get one but the PS3 is a better media centre than Xbox, IMO. If you want a media player then get that (don’t buy a console if you are only interested in streaming media), Apple TV is one choice (I have two first gens) but recently I’ve been using a Western Digital Live Plus. The xbox is usually a last choice for watching video in our house. This is coming from someone who has Xbox, PS3, AppleTV and WDTV.

Although i own both a Ps3 and an Xbox 360, I would prefer my PS3 over the 360 if i were to use those things because i dont need to get a PS+ account, unlike with 360, you need a gold live account – which is garbage. -.-

So Tricko is misinformed on the price… that still doesn’t make him a fanboy. And, as crawdad points out, it’s still $40, versus free. And that’s on top of the original purchase price, which is way more for the XBox. Seriously, XBox is a great games console, but it represents poor value for money for people who don’t want to game.
Apple TV already saved us the money on our cable subscription to be allowed to rent movies, and the movies are better and equally priced. It would be a couple of years before XBox covered the capital cost, and that $40 a year would make it more like five years.
Probably time to accept that the original article was just plain wrong.

for iFans who don’t care about the many other features that the xbox brings (gaming, streaming from PC, DVD player, facebook/twitter, TV/movies, FiOS/u-verse integration to name a few – plus Kinect with additional hardware though), the apple TV with streaming only service is all they want – because well, Apple “told” them that is ALL they “need”)

For folks who really need just streaming capability (and absolutely nothing else), the apple TV is a good device… well, maybe… Roku is a strong competitor (for lower price) in that space – with way more free channels.
