What prices are those? There is nothing Apple sells that is so overpriced compared to the competition. In fact the competition struggles to compete on price, just ask Motorola and Blackberry with their ‘iPad Killers’.

I used to sell TVs when I was at college back in the early 90s. Philips were one of the first brands we stocked that moved away from the 4:3 casing. Back then Samsung were a low end budget brand – I’ll always remember the huge pile of returned faulty TVs in the storeroom, mostly own brand cr@p and Samsung’s.

Apple could easily slap the innards of an iPad onto a Sharp/LG/Samung LED display, give it an iphone like exterior and market it. The TV would perfectly integrate with Apples ecosystem. The problem lies with price. Unless they sell it at a loss, it wouldn’t come close to competing in the marketplace with Panasonics, Sony, Sharps, LG, and Samsungs which will be sold for significantly less. If Pioneer or Fujitsu couldn’t compete in their undisputed superior TVs, Apple sure can’t. High End TVs sell poorly, regardless of performance, utility, or branding. Apple in the TV industry would be about as competitive as 38 Studios in the videogame industry.

So many articles have taken that Ive quote about the most important work being the stuff hes doing now and have translated that into ZOMG APPLE IS ABOUT TO RELEASE SOMETHING AMAZING.

well, perhaps they are. But please dont use that quote, it makes you look dumb. He has said before that whatever hes working on at the time is to him the most important thing they are doing. He could be designing a new stylus and it would be the most important work hes done. It could be a new watch. It could be a new anything. It doesnt matter.

What matters is that whatever he is doing at any given time will be the most important thing hes done to him at that time,

It means absolutely nothing to rumours about a TV.

No other company in the tech world has done so many things right as Apple. Even people who won’t buy their products admit they are the ones to beat right now.

Thanks for the advice. iCloud backup spanks the crap out Gingerbread’s default backup features which is basically your Google account information and a list of apps. To get to Apple level you have to root and use 3rd party apps. ICS seems a little better but even that doesn’t seem up to par with Apple in terms of completeness. Maybe Jellybean they will get it right? Looking at WP8 or BB10 for my next phone.

Apple store is your best bet (they’ll probably replace it, so be sure to back up) although I just read that Apple’s phone support got high marks from consumers. I Googled “iphone 4 speaker not working” and there’s a thread on the topic at the Apple Support Communities. It has some tips that should be tried before taking the phone to the store. Good fortune to you both.

When I read comments like “Android rulz!!!!” I wish more people would follow that line of thinking.

But perfect timing, my sister’s iPhone 4S speaker stopped working. Ringer doesn’t ring. Just vibrates. No sound. But she can talk to people on the phone. She has double checked her settings, updated iOS to the latest version and power cycled the phone. Bluetooth is not on nor paired with any device. Any ideas? The Apple store is a bit of a drive her so I was hoping I could give her some more things to try before she drives over tomorrow.

You are obviously one of the faithfull. I work in an office of engineers. Only the apple faithfull have hardware problems with their computers. It is touching to see their faith in the all powerfull Apple. It must be their own fault when something goes wrong. They take their laptop to the vendor that sold it to them. Nope, it still goes out to lunch and starts beeping. They then take it to the all powerful genious bar. Nope, can’t help. You are delusional if you think Apple products are better. I bet you think Macs can’t get viruses when Mac OS is primitive in virus protection. Yes Apple is successful. You are the one who doesn’t understand why.

The funny thing is I was all set to let go of all of my Apple hate. Got my sister an iPhone 4S in March. Tim Cook was making some much needed changes when he came to power. I applauded him for that. Thought I was really going to make my peace with Apple. Then Cook said he was going to continue with this pointless patent war. And so here we are. Kind of disappointed myself but such is life.

This is as ridiculous an article as I’ve ever read. Not one of the things you cited in support of your belief that Apple was making a TV had anything to do with a TV. The article is filled with vague rumors or innocuous quotes.

You might as well say that Apple was building a spaceship and that they planned to colonize Mars. It would be just as well supported by your article as an Apple TV.

I was a financial analyst for Gateway computers in 2002-2003 when we launched the then market disruptive 42″ Plasma TV. Prior to Gateway only the rich could afford a flat screen. Truth is, there are a lot of costs that can be leveraged in a PC factory because assembling a TV wasn’t all that different. We were already buying components from the same companies that sell TV components so even price negotiations could be leveraged. What killed Gateway was the service & support side, we were totally unprepared for the level of repairs and returns we saw from the than new technology and the Gateway stores were only showrooms, not full fledged service centers like Apple has cultivated.
My point? It’s not as risky a plunge for Apple to get into TV’s as many make it out to be. It’s a natural outgrowth of the PC business from my inside view at Gateway. Apple wisely has let flat screen technology mature to where it can be manufactured efficiently (we had 40% scrap rates on plasma “tubes”) and they have the support network in place to support it. Plus, the whole Apple TV has been a massive disguised market research and field testing. Apple is doing what they do best, learning from other people’s failures (Gateway country store anyone?).

ever hear of 4k ? those TVs are coming out this year. at this point it’s not about the tv it’s about the input from your cable or sat box. if that doesn’t improve the higher resolution is a waste.

it would be something that ties the iOS ecosystem together. i am not sure if a television is that product, especially since the living room is i longer the central hub of media and entertainment. to place hatmuchemphasis in a product category that evryone is losing kney on means that Apple really thinks they have somethung special in the new TV to blow past evryone else and catch us all by surprise, much like they did with iPad, which debutted in a much less crowded space.

you know nothing about resolution and scaling. Apple does not have the technology to do something on this scale..not at 300+ PPI and if they did the set would be out of reach of anyone but the wealthy. There is no way to bring a 50″ 300 ppi panel to the market with the scaling necessary to make stardard def images look even half ass AND keep a 40 point plus profit margin.

A good portion of this seems to be based on reports of anonymous current Apple employees pitching tents wrt upcoming Apple products and celeb employees talking up post-Jobs efforts. This just in: everyone who likes to get paid by their current employer or holds stock in their employer does this.

Once they get fired, then it will come out that they thought that there were a ton of flaws and it was only by the grace of God that the product didn’t cause the downfall of the company and “if you think X was garbage, wait until you see how they shat on Y!”
