Android won't be seen as a poor man's Iphone except by smug Iphone owners. My Android phone does everything I need it to do. Why spend the money on an Iphone?
The Apple TV plays all standard, open formats, you don't need to buy anything from the iTunes Store to play on it, so learn to check facts.

1080p is too large to effectively download, plus unless you have a 50" TV or higher, you won't notice much of a difference. The AppleTV is packed with features, so for $99 it's extremely cheap for what you get.

The new Mac mini is $668! not $800!

You just don't like feature rich, high quality hardware and software for some reason.

Dude, the Seagate Freeagent Theater+ sells for like $40 right now. And really versatile mediaplayers (that also play evil MKVs, TSs and AVIs, not just stuff bought from Apple! And that can also actually play HD as in 1080p, unlike the Apple TV which can only do 720p, a.k.a. the poor man's HD!) have been available for a LOT less than $99 for quite some time now from all kinds of manufacturers (WD, Patriot etc)...

So why on earth are you calling the Apple TV "cheap"? Right, compared to a horrenduously overpriced Mac Mini (which used to be $500 once before the Intel switch, now it's $800!) it probably is, but could you please look outside the box of the overpriced Apple universe just for once?

No, the completed auctions are less than 90 days, and now that the new AppleTV has been announce, the older models will increase in value. Apple products are just like fine Art or Wine.

Look at the current "completed" auctions over the last week, they are all above $170, so now you know...

I never troll, I only post facts, and I've never hit the up or down arrow, you are still bitter, that's all.

Yes, there are some OLD completed auctions with prices above $100, but all were started before the Sept 1 announcement of the new ATV. So the CURRENT price is not as high any more.

Listen, why don't you take a hint from all the thumbs down that you're getting and go troll somewhere else?

No, the Mac is the most popular because of its superior software, hardware and "consistency", something the Windows world can never achieve. Everyone agrees Windows and Linux is a "poor man's" Mac for a reason.

You mean 125 Million iOS devices, not 12.5... And yes, it includes the iPad and iPod, new AppleTV and iPhone, why wouldn't it? That's the platform Android tries to compete with... That's why few in the industry think much of the Android OS, it will end up like Linux, just watch...

PCs are in a different class, they aren't touch based. And don't be absurd, the Android is tiny compared to iOS, it only has 16 Million installed while the iOS is growing 3 times faster don't forget.

No, my warranty claim is perfect. If it's under warranty or AppleCare, Apple will fix it for free. You are talking about "out of warranty" Apple products since they are so valuable and worth maintaining. PCs are just thrown out after 5 years, Macs run for 15.

But AppleTV doesn't compete with TiVo, they are entirely different approaches. So your comment on that made no sense.

I live in the mountains of Colorado, we build satellites, drones and are directly on the backbone, where are you?

No, there isn't anyone on Craigslist selling iPhones to get an Android. They are on Craigslist because they are so valuable. I recently sold my 3GS to a chick in Russia for $310. I paid $199 one year earlier, do the math. Then LEARN that Apple products are the best value in the market.

Ah, what? PCs running Windows never became a superior OS, so it sounds like you are unfamiliar with computing. Windows has always been looked down upon don't forget.

iOS will have 70% of the market in 8 years, so how can that be the footnote when it has the most share by far?

Your link was hilarious, thanks for the laugh!

Yes, you just aren't a sophisticated computer person, so don't need that much power... but trust me, someday you'll move up to the top portion of the market, you can start to learn what the big boys use here:

Almost every reason why you think the Mac is a superior platform can easily be applied to a PC.

Besides, I don't know how you get that figure of 12.5 million devices running iOS. Are you including all iPads, iPhones and the like that have been sold? If so, that still dwarfs PC sales by millions and Android device by a large number as well.

Further, your claims about warranty coverage is completely off the mark. If that were truly the case, then many of my friends wouldn't be making money hand over fist fixing systems that could just have easily been addressed by support.

In terms of sales, 1.8 million devices hardly a rousing success. TiVo easily beat that and dare I say it even Microsoft's lousy adaptation as well.

What area do you live in where they don't have Blu-Ray discs? Now you are beginning to grasp at straws and sound more like a troll with every passing remark. Further, I challenge you to go on Craigslist and see all the people dumping their iPhones to buy an Android device. They vastly outnumber the individuals looking to do the opposite.

Android is quickly becoming a superior OS and like the PC market, iOS will be considered a footnote in Mobile Phone OSes like Symbian.

In short, you are clearly a troll, highly misinformed or just clueless.

Besides, check this article out: this person is spot on: http://www.retrevo.com/content/blog/2010/09/six-reasons-why-apple-tv-missed-the-mark

I don't see myself moving down to use an Apple product any time soon and I don't see myself recommending them to any of the companies I work with.

You are incorrect. Look at the "completed items", (click the button on the lower left column) That is what shows the "current market value" the average is about $170, so I was $20 too low.

You need to learn that most "bidding" happens in the last few minutes, so a $102 "bid" unless it's the "winning bid", means nothing.

"Buy it Now" can be small or large sellers, so it's clear you don't know how eBay works. So learn to check facts before you post.

The point is, with Apple you aren't limited. The Macs run 77 OSes for example, all at the same time if you want, so you don't have the lock-in as you do with Windows.

But nobody really cares what processor it has, they just want to have the very best product, so that's why Apple shines for people who are the most demanding.

No, you can code in C, C+, etc... sure, we all agree that Objective C is the top, but until you are ready, you can code in the older languages.

But Android has ended up like Linux... highly fractured, only used by the geeks, while hated by customers worldwide. It's almost as bad as Windows, and nobody wants to repeat that mistake.

Yes, the iPhone has by far the best resolution screen and fastest graphics of any smartphone, check it out:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/

Apple doesn't push anything, they simply provide the top quality device and then let the customers decide, that's why the iOS now has 125,000,000 devices is growing 3 times faster than Android for example.

What Apple provides is "consistency" between all their devices, no other company can do that since only Apple builds the entire ecosystem, so it's wonderful for people who require the best with the least amount of hassle.

Ah, I already have an AppleTV so I can speak expertly on the new device. You'll get one in a few months, don't worry!

Yes, Apple will cover basically anything under warranty, no questions asked, that's another benefit of buying from them. They won't give you the run around.

Apple has never been in the DVR market, so what are you talking about? Ah, what? The current AppleTV is over 3 years old, so it's time for a new model, it sold well, about 1.8 million sold, but it was more of an early test... now the mass market begins, just like what they did with the iPod in 2001. So you are saying the iPod wasn't successful? Steve has no plans to kill the AppleTV, he just introduced a brand new model, geesh!

No, I live in a very advanced area, that's why Blu-ray discs can't be found. Why would someone want a VHS tape? It's seen as the same thing here.

No, there hasn't been anyone dumping an iPhone for an Android, you mean dumping an Android for the new iPhone 4. I agree the Android isn't going anywhere soon, but it will always be seen as the poor man's iPhone.

In sum, not sure why you are so bitter about the future of technology, you'll move up to Apple products at some point, then won't be so disappointed with life. Take care.

I don't want to get into an Operating System pissing match, but come on. I am so tired of reading how Apple users seem to want the "very best" but don't realize that everyone has their own preferences and what may be "the best" for you is not the best for everyone else. That's one of the biggest reasons why I hate Apple fan-bois. they will scream any time someone attacks their precious platform.

You can't be serious here. You are comparing two 1Ghz processors - one developed by and for exclusive use by Apple and one that is used by countless other devices. In my book, I call that proprietary. Besides, if I want to develop for Apple, I need a Mac and have to code in Objective-C. On the other hand, Android was built from the ground up to be portable and flexible. Yet another reason why people are going to Android and beginning to notice Apple may not be the only game in town.

Best screen? I saw the screen - it's okay, but I checked out the Galaxy S - now that's a nice screen. Incredibly nice. Much better than anything Apple pushed out. What exactly is Apple offering that's so special? Multi-touch? Android has that, hell even Microsoft has that. Cute user interface - Android has that too. FaceTime so you can chat with others via video? Wooooo... hardly a new concept there - Nokia phones and others have had cameras in the front for years now. Hardly innovative.

I also find it humorous how you keep trying to defend Apple and their almost tyrannical policies. Lax warranty? Hardly. The Apple TV has 40% of the Market? You're kidding right? Try Tivo and the others.

Apple has a small sliver of the DVR market. If it were truly that successful, why don't I see it sold everywhere? Oh yes, it's because it was EOL'ed. Hmmmm curious isn't it - why would Steve Jobs kill a product that was doing so well in the market? That seems awfully stupid for an executive to do that...

Besides, the new AppleTV has not even been on shelves yet and you keep blathering on and on about how wonderful it is. Until I physically see it with my own two eyes and can review it, it's vapor to me. PERIOD.

Besides, everywhere I go, I see BluRay discs rented or sold so unless you live in the sticks somewhere, I don't think they are a dead medium - maybe you are confusing them with HD-DVD which has been dead for quite some time.

Further, I don't exactly think that Android is going away any time soon. Most people I know have been dumping their iPhones like mad to get an Android phone since they finally woke up and realized they can get an open phone that costs less to run and has lots of applications with more every day.

I'm done with these debates. You want your iToy, go for it. You think your iCandy is the best thing since sliced bread, good for you. Those who actually want a phone that actually works and has a future, well... you know the rest of the story.

How is the iPhone not open? You can download the iOS for free, you can develop for free, you can even make money by sending your App to the App Store. Where is the barrier?

No, 3rd Party Apps DO NOT void your warranty. It's only if you BREAK your iPhone would the warranty come into question. Apple's warranty is the most lax in the business, it simply requires that you don't "damage it", so if you have a problem, simply restore it to factory setting (to make sure it's an Apple level problem) then they'll fix whatever for free. Sweet.

No, the iPhone is currently the fastest smartphone, it has the best screen is the smallest, has the most free and paid Apps, on and on. Android really never gained much traction with customers, they use it as a phone, but the OS and UI is so poor, everyone, including developers have pretty much given up on it.

The current AppleTV has 40% of the set top market, and now that Apple will sell millions of new AppleTV's that will push their market share up to the 80% range for the next 10 years or so. It's all about the having the best product don't forget.

An AppleTV won't hick up, plus if you want to cache your data, just store them on your local machine or wireless hard drive. The AppleTV can stream from anywhere so it doesn't need a local hard drive. So the reason you'll get an AppleTV is it has more functionality that any other similar device. You'll see!

Try and find a Blu-ray disc, it's next to impossible, everyone knows online and wireless has taken over so it's a dead end.

Well, you have to remember that Apple users created this industry so we tend to be the most technically informed about computing. I can tell you don't have a deep understanding of how this industry works, but once you move up to Macs and other Apple products, you'll enter the top echelon of computing.

So quit being so bitter about people who want the very best.

Just because you are bad at math, doesn't make me wrong. If you sell your current AppleTV for $150, but the new one costs $99... you make about $50 to upgrade. Why is that such a bad thing in your eyes?

I have no emotional attachment, I just like having the very best, why are you against that?

Ha, ha... you need to look at the completed listing, not current bids, don't you even know how eBay works? Are you still a Windows user or something? Take a look at the actual sales data:

http://snipurl.com/11oqq1 (then enter your info)

Well over 120 AppleTVs have been sold for $170 or more. Top units are going for $300+

Again, you just seem bitter that Apple makes great products and you have set your mind against anyone that prefers to have the very best.

Take care, this is my last post to you, you don't seem like a quality oriented person.

I don't think the Android vs iOS comparison is very balanced.

Yes Android devices will surpass iOS devices very soon but I bet the experience of owning one will not always be the same. Android is too fractured. And don't give Google too much credit, they have closed their proprietary apps to only the device they bless. I have almost bought a cheap Android tablet until I saw it didnt have the Market app.

Since the value in Android and iOS devices lies in the apps, if your Android device doesn't have the Google apps then there is no Google Market as its proprietary.

I am an Apple user (iMac, Airport Extreme, Airport Express, 2 x AppleTV's, iPhone, Apple HiFi, Apple the fruit in general etc) but I also see the appeal of Android.

The thing holding me back is consistancy. Will the device I buy have the latest OS, the market, will it get upgrades, will the UI be usable, will it fit into my current set of devices.

At the moment for me thats a no. Personal choice not religious conviction.

Since I am invested in Apple and have set up a multiroom audio system using Apple products, the Apple TV would fit well in there.

If you aren't an Apple customer then a Roku, Popbox etc would probably be a better alternative.

You know you don't HAVE to buy it! :)

I read the link you sent and I don't see how you can say that Apple is "open" - in fact given history, Steve Jobs would immediately stop any attempt to make any of his devices "open" to the general public.

Look at how he tried to stop people from jailbreaking their iPhones and still frowns on it even though the courts said that people should be allowed to do so.

While I am not the biggest fan of Microsoft, anyone who understands technology knows that their architecture is much more flexible than anything save Android.

Further, yes 3rd party apps do void your warranty if you don't use the ones that are sold by the Apple store. You need to use their proprietary interface to upload them and frankly, I don't need the headache of using it since it is so cumbersome to use.

If you compare an iPhone to an Android phone, you will see that an Android phone is faster and is growing in popularity with each passing day. Further, people are porting that OS while 3rd party manufacturers are leveraging it everywhere they can. I have yet to see Apple do that with any supplier.

Not only that, where do you get this 80% number? I can see maybe 8% or 18% but 80%?

Besides, yes you want to use the HD so you can cache your shows, I know I wouldn't trust my ISP (comcast.net) to stream anything longer than 5 to 10 minutes without it hiccuping.

BluRay is hardly dead and torrents are still going to be around for a long time. Besides, if those formats die, you will still find others which will take its place. Further, most phones nowadays allow you to upload video to TVs so tell me why again why I need to spend more money on a device with such crippled functionality other than "it's an Apple"?

Frankly, it's posts like this that show me how clueless people are who support Apple. This device will die for all the reasons why I said and then some. I know my friends, those who are die hard Macheads will not touch it. But hey, it's your money - do what you want with it.

Apple only uses open standards, so it's the least proprietary of any PC firm. OSX is 90% open, Windows is 100% closed for example. Yes, everyone that owns an AppleTV loves it, easily the best value you can find in computing. Nobody ever used the hard drive, since it's a streaming device, so now with fast, cheap broadband, that's likely why it's no longer needed. You can use your local Macs for local storage into the new AppleTV, so it's not a problem.

Yes, Intel chips are slow, so programs like Boxee on the AppleTV could be sluggish if you clicked too fast, but now that it's move up to Apple A4 processors, it will be slippery fast. (see the real time demos)

No, the iPhone is by far the top phone, it's super fast, has the most functionality and don't be ridiculous... 3rd party Apps don't void your warranty. That was a complete myth, and clearly shows you have no idea what you are talking about.

Yes, the $99 price point is perfect to move from the current 40% market share of the original AppleTV to near 80%, so everyone wins.

Yes, you can still stream free content from torrents or from wherever, just like the old model, so it's basically unlimited in what it can do. Ah, but Blu-ray has pretty much died out don't forget, so this will be the final nail in the coffin of Blu-ray.

Yes, it will be stunning, so I'm sure you are like everyone else and can't wait to get one. You can start to learn about it here:

http://www.apple.com/appletv/

Expect shortages for the first few months, so pre-order now, this will be a several million a month seller.

In my experience, while Apple seems to churn out fun sexy toys, they also have a tendency to be proprietary, limited in functionality and short lived. Look at the original Apple TV. Most people that I know who bought it were extremely disappointed. It didn't have a large enough hard disk, the processor was slow and there was not enough memory. The iPhone is just as bad. It's a closed system where you have to "void the warranty" to actually use third party software. Why do I have to do that? That's insane in this day and age.

Just because this device is within the impulse buy zone, it just seems silly to invest in something that you know someone will come out with that's smaller, cheaper and more expandable.

Besides, what exactly does this really provide that you can't get with your laptop now? 99c TV shows from ABC and Fox? I can stream those for free right now. NetFlix movies? Whatever - my BluRay player can do that and so can my TV without buying an additional box.

Frankly, I'll wait until this is actually on shelves and I can actually see it with my own two eyes. I guess that is what makes me different than the typical Apple user.

LOL, you don't give up, the pay must be really good!

First, you said yourself "we'll make money" from selling the old ATV for $150. Sadly, your emotional attachment to the product has little to do with its resale value.

Second, I also took a look at eBay, before my previous post, and I saw that there is not a single bid on the 160GB Apple TVs that were priced above $100. So again, good luck to anyone trying to sell one for more than that.

Third, you haven't posted any useful info but only ridiculous praise for a silly product. That makes you look like a shill. If you aren't one but are simply confused, check the meaning of shill somewhere (try Google).

What? Why would I sell it? It's a prized device. I took a look at eBay after my post, amazing! There are at least 80 of them there going for $200 to $450, so you're just bitter they are worth so much. The AppleTV has been very popular don't forget, the number 1 selling TV box by far.

And why would anyone get paid to post helpful information? I think you have a mental problem if you think so.

It is now getting beyond a joke how we're bent over a barrel in the UK.. This thing is $99 which at current exchange rates is about £68. Add 17.5% for VAT (sales tax) and you still only hit £80 and yet we are charged £99!!!

Not sure why anyone would need those programs anymore since their is more free content on AppleTV, plus the user interface is far better on the AppleTV.

It's because the TV / Movie industry is highly fractured and they are now scared to death of Apple taking over the distribution. With Music it was easier since nobody knew how large it would become. Now Apple is the largest distributor of Music in the world and the Recording Industry is angry about it.

So the TV / Movie world is going to make damn sure "nobody" gets control... it's a mess that only torrents can solve.

I never understood why Steve Jobs regarded the AppleTV as just a hobby. There is so much potential for improvement in the home entertainment business, which Apple can really take advantage of like they did in the mp3 player business. I was looking for a device earlier on in the year, there were so many to choose from: WDTV, Popcorn Hour, Roku, Sonos, HDX, Vudu, Asus O!Play, Logitech Squeezebox... but none of them were perfect (WDTV was the closest imo), so I had to turn to the much more expensive games consoles instead (it was a tough choice but I went with the PS3 because the Slim just came out at the time). Now the Boxee Box and GoogleTV are entering the fray but neither seem perfect either.

"we dont have Netflix yet"

I don't think we will ever have a good and cheap equivalent in Australia, the closest I know of is the PSN service (which I haven't even considered trying) or renting from online services like Quickflix or brick-and-mortar stores like VideoEzy... wait, the Australian Apple website says it does do movie rentals, $AU4.99 for HD rentals...

I'm not sure you need more AppleTVs to make your audio system cheaper though... do you even need it since you already have 2?

I see the potential, even though here in Australia the device doesn't do Netflix (we dont have Netflix yet).

At present I have 2 of the old Apple TV's, one in the lounge, one in the bedroom, and I have an airport express in the kitchen. I use them to stream music around the house using the iphone remote app

If I could add more rooms for $129 (Australian Dollars) with the new AppleTV that would make my whole house audio system even cheaper.

Even just hooking it up to a stereo for music is cheaper than any other music streamer (Sonos, Squeezebox etc)

whats more, an update to the remote app is gotta be coming that makes this all work better.
