As a teenage college student, I can't afford to buy a smartphone, the regular bill that goes with it AND the data plan that's mandatory for the phone to work to its full potential.
On the marketing issue, intuitively you'd think there would be more specialization as the market expands. However, Apple has basically covered the mass market with a single phone. With iPhone, the specialization is done by the selection of Apps. The iphone seems to work well for both the most hardened techie, the soccer mom, and the teenager/hipster all the same. At Coachella this year, the most surprising thing to me was the number of young people with Android phones.

The price is going to be key. With android phones and iphones available at $99 or less w/ contract, it's hard to see how Kin is going to make a dent unless it's basically super cheap or free.

Couldn't agree more on the importance of the Marketing. I happen to like the Kin also (is it 'the Kin', 'Kin', 'Microsoft Kin''?)
I'm actually surprisingly impressed by their social media campaign- compelled me to write a full report on it, if you're into geeky social media analysis you might find it intriguing as well: http://www.qworky.com/blog/2010/04/what-you-can-learn-from-microsoft-kin-social-media-2/

Definitely agree - while the geeks might get caught up in smartphone enthusiasm, there's a huge market for featurephone-style devices that Microsoft can tap into. Less glamorous, perhaps, but still lucrative.
