Value is relative. I save a lot money with Hulu, I enjoy the content and could care less about the ads. It works for me. It may not work for you and that’s great! So how about you take off your troll-hard pants and move along.

pausing defeats the point. you want to take care of stuff DURING the commercials so that when you are done, the commercials are over and you can resume watching your program. If you have to pause the commercials, then when you are done, you still have to sit through the. DUH!

I only have Hulu Plus because it has some Korean historical dramas that Netflix does not have. Otherwise, it is true, the commercials get more and more and it is very annoying!

Come on. Totally different. AND they put more ads in the damn HULU segments than they do on regular broadcast. You must work for an ad agency or sell network spots b/c anyone in their right mind would vomit after watching one show on HULU PLUS and ask themselves “Did I just pay to watch this 20 minutes of audio visual bile from Toyota…oh I think there is a clip from my show..AWESOME…a real show…hold on..another ad” Charging people money to watch ads and disguising it as a ‘premium content channel’ puts the whore in whorenendous.

Wow, I read this and thought maybe I had a blackout and had written it myself. This is spot on. I devour media of all kinds on my ipad and as a businessman I realize the model has to make money, but HULU PLUS basically asks you to pay to watch ads with tv clips here and there. What a joke. At first, i thought it was a bad dream but the ad intervals kept getting shorter and the ads kept getting longer. On my second show, I had had enough and turned it off and canceled my FREE subscription. I dont even want this service for FREE. It is an insult to monetize a product this way especially on a pay model. My advice for those who may be tiring of the Netflix content. Sign up for a free week of HULU PLUS. It will make you realize how damn good and what a value Netflix is. HULU should be ashamed. Waste of money and time. For those out there wondering what HULU is all about…turn the channel. Buy a book. It was the worst experience I have ever PAID for.

I agree completely. I tried Hulu Plus because the free version won’t run on an iPad. Come to find out that some shows like the Outer Limits arent available for the iPad even with Hulu Plus. And just as many commercials on the plus version as on the free…why am I paying $7.99 per month again?

Netfix on the other hand for he same monthly fee has better movies, everything runs on the iPad and no commercials. Both are running a 30 day free trial so try them both but I think you’ll see that Netflix is worth keeping and Hulu is not.

Better compare Hulu plus to cable, not Netflix. I hate commercials too, but when you say “I pay money, I should not have to see commercials”…ummmm, you pay far more money with cable/satellite and get commercials as well. I’d rather pay $8/mo for current shows than $100/mo for current shows. I have Netflix too but the tv shows are old enough to be out on dvd so I expect no commercials. Ditch cable or satellite, get both – for $16 you are set. Do you get everything? No, but your not paying a ridiculous bill for a bunch of crap you don’t watch to companies who won’t let you choose your programming. Cheers

Hulu plus is a big disappointment every episode I watch there’s always glitches the program will stop and start throughout the whole episode it’s so F$@&$@ annoying and to add on the freaking advertisement, what’s the point?!?!? Although, it is cheap honestly in my opinion not worth it.

So true. Just cancelled. Got tired of trying to FF or rewind and getting hit with the ads each time!! Basically, you’re hit at all angles by commercials. It took me THREE DAYS to watch a single 22 minute episode of a TV show. The constant commercials, lag (restarts will call on the commercials again!) and difficulty in browsing just made it not worth it.

Not a good idea for a pay service. Netflix has its issues, but is about a billion times better.

To sum up: I had a free trial and still feel ripped off!!

I have no problem paying $8 a month for Hulu and $9 a month for Netfix. Great combo! Got rid of my cable all together, the only thing I think Hulu should do is get rid of the commercials for the people that pay for it! It’s really annoying that there are commercial breaks constantly. If I wanted to deal with that, I woulda stuck with my cable

I understand they need to be able to cover their expenses but us paying for the service should MORE than cover the “limited commercial interruptions” I have NO commercial interruptions with Netfix yet I have several with Hulu. Why pay for the service when I can just go to the web sites and watch them free with the same “limited commercial interruptions”

While Hulu Plus is certainly not perfect, it has all of my shows that I used to subscribe to on iTunes. So instead of paying ~$3 an episode or whatever, I pay $8 a month for all of my shows. Can’t beat that.

I agree with everything that has been said before. The biggest issue I have is the fact that some of the shows that I want to watch tell me “Web Only” WTF? The whole advantage of having streaming to my tv is so I can lay on my couch all comfy and watch whetever I want as opposed to having to sit in front of my computer. Although I dont have a laptop yet, still a desktop, I am thinking of buying one just so I can hook it up to the tv via HDMI, and stream ANYTHING I want! HULU plus sucks ass…

The problem with it for me is even on the lowest setting it can’t play for more than 30 seconds then it stops while it buffers and plays 5 seconds, lather rinse repeat. I have yet to get through anything without the interruptions. It took me 15 minutes to get through the first 2 minutes of a show the other night, I wanted to see if it would eventually straighten itself out but nope. You can’t even pause it for it to buffer, it just sits there and waits for you to hit play. No other streaming service has such issues as this one does, and I can’t really put it into words, the depth of frustration.

I’ve been looking into Hulu Plus because my television died, and I’m not going to keep paying Tivo to record shows I can’t watch. I’ve been meaning to cancel Tivo, anyway. I get that the ads are annoying, but I also understand why, for only $8 a month, they have to get money from somewhere else to afford all the recent content. I love Netflix, but the choice of content on streaming is extremely limited. I wonder if those who are saying they can watch everything they want just happen to live where Netflix gives more options. I’m in Texas, and a friend in Oregon can’t access some of the things I can access on NF, and vice versa.

I have had the hulu plus for a while and I must say I have no idea why I pay for it. Problems

1. Not enough good shows, which is ironic for a “tv-show” app, netflix has more shows and hulu plus usually doesn’t hold more than 2 seasons per show.
2. It has too many ads, netflix costs the same and it has no ads
3. Hulu Plus has almost no decent movies
4. Shows randomly decide not to play.
5. It takes about 10 seconds to start rewinding to name a few.

I totally aggree with you, cable, Dish Network, and direcTv have a lot more comercials then hulu but people still pay from $29.99 till $99.99 every month. Hulu is only 8 dollars a month with fewer comrecials, so to me it sounds like a good deal.

I recently bought a Sony Bravia 55″ LCD TV and already had Netflix and have used the free Hulu service since it came out. So I decided to give Hulu Plus a try… boy, was I disappointed…

Put aside the terrible navigation and search capabilities,
Put aside the annoying advertisements in a subscription service every 10 minutes,
Put aside the inability to resume a show mid-stream,
Put aside the inability to skip over advertisements when fast forwarding through content…

… and what you have left is a very inconsistent streaming media service.

If you’re going to fragment the show with advertisements, make sure the content is pre-loaded prior to stream cross-over, so I don’t have to wait up-to 10 seconds for ads and show content to “load.”

If you’re going to provide streaming services, make sure you have the infrastructure; being able to connect to, interact with and view content on Hulu was extremely flaky, one minute it worked fine, the next it would take 20+ seconds to connect/react, the next it would be completely unavailable. (No it’s not my internet connection/bandwidth – other services, i.e. Netflix don’t exhibit the problem.)

For me, Hulu Plus completely misses the plot when it comes to subscription media services.

Also, there have been a lot of comments about how Cable uses the same model (Ad and Subscription based) so what’s the whining about… Well, just because that’s the way Cable does it, doesn’t make it right or how it should be done. I (and I’m sure many others) specifically dropped Cable because I was sick of watching fragmented content between advertisements.

As a free web-based service Hulu rates a “MEH” (meaning I can watch my shows with ads if I really need to pretty much anytime I want, so if I can’t find it anywhere else, I’ll use it.)

Hulu Plus rates a “WTF” (meaning, why would I pay for this crap? – get a clue; people want to watch what they want, when they want without commercial interruption and *are* willing to pay for it.)

TV content streaming remains a niche market looking for someone with vision… and likely won’t be realized until the stations get behind the technology and stop looking for ridiculous licensing fees and restrictions on delivery.

I watch maybe 20% of what cable has to offer. I’m
comparing an ocean to a lake. Sure not as much content, but I miss most cable content anyway. On-demand? I do far better with zune, amazon and vudu. And they’re easier to access and manage.
Cable is a shit storm of content I don’t care about. Between Hulu, Netflix and the various cloud-based video on demand services cable is pointless and not as valuable. I’d rather have a smaller swatch of content and be able to watch it when and where ever I want than have an infinite pool of content that I can’t find the time to watch at all, but still paying 3x more.
Until cable let’s me watch anything I want when and where I want, it will never be as valuable.

The cable comparison is downright silly. You simply can’t compare the amount of content available on cable (regular cable TV + ondemand prime time shows) and Hulu. No live sports. Only half of recent shows. No HBO option. Yeah, $ 60 is a steep price, but it’s like comparing a Pinto and a Ferrari.

I totally agree. I just cancelled my free trial today with Hulu Plus. I just didn’t see what they had to offer more than Netflix. I really enjoy Netflix. I know a lot of people complain about the price going up but to me it’s worth it. For example…I was able to watch an entire new series on Starz through Netflix watch instantly. And when they do have a watch instant tv series available to watch, they have all the episodes, not just the last five.
