I think the reason is you can't make a 'perfect' game. Even if a game can't be improved on in way, a lot of players who like the genre it's in, will like a game that fits their taste more specifically more or at least wish some feature was different based on opinion. If Apple has a first party game in several genres, the vast majority of gamers would find at least one game by Apple from a genre they like that they find imperfect and it would tarnish their reputation.
Yeah.
I used to have an iPod Touch 4th Gen. It rebooted all the time. I had to replace my iPod Touch once and restore it again before it actually worked.
I admit, it was an alright device, but Android devices are so much stabler.

Android has the ability to take over in this sphere. Just look how much cash Ouya generated on Android. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console.

Currently the Sixaxis controller app in the Play store has been downloaded 50k - 100k times. Games like Shadowgun, Virtua Tennis, and Riptide natively support the use of controllers, and almost any Android phone released in the last year has the ability to output a mirror image of the screen to a TV. With Android 4.2 it's now part of the OS to do it wirelessly.

Companies like Power A have jumped on the bandwagon with products like this:http://www.powera.com/moga. And indie hardware makers like this guy have been capitalizing on it too: http://buy.thegameklip.com/.

Combine all of this with things like OnLive, and the many emulators available, and gaming on Android does anything but suck. Start playing Shadowgun on your HD tv, and it looks just as good as an Xbox game, then when it's time to leave, drop your phone into one of these portable controllers, and keep playing on the go. This brings you close to what Sony is trying to do with a PS3 and a Vita.

Surely a focus on gaming would change the demographic that apple aims for? I can't see many professionals wanting to buy a console. Apple products are more expensive because of the quality and usability; I have no problem handing over £1500 for a MacBook Pro because it increases my productivity and makes my work and life easier; I would however, have zero interest in a gaming console (at any price point!) I can't see many youngsters (being general here and assuming that most gamers are under 21) being able to afford an apple console should one ever be made available. It would seem a step back for the company.

Exactly. To rephrase the point, Apple controls everhting on the development of their device from the supplier chain to the end product distribution. Until they figure out how to control all the big developers in one space (like what they did with music industry), they wont touch gaming.

Its the same with their MAC line. They cant control every game to looks the same and run at specified frame rate etc, thats why in the end they simply ditch it. But that can change under new management direction.

I think they are leaving it up to developers and accessory makers to fill in the gaps. Their "console" consists of an iOS device coupled with an AppleTV . Which for the most part works really well. If someone could add a Bluetooth headset and motion sensor bar to the mix we would be all set to blow away the competition :)

You're not looking closely enough at the hardware. New mini? HD4000 integrated graphics -- performance is awful, AND it shares ram with the CPU, so any graphics operation is compromised right out of the gate in a loaded machine (as machines running games almost always are.) iMacs? Typically the same thing. Laptops? Typically the same thing. iPads? Not enough RAM for modern games... that's why all the games you see even on IOS are so limited.

And when they *do* allow for a graphics card under OSX, for instance the Mac Pro, they never go for high performance cards -- strictly middle of the road. You want high performance? Sorry, no drivers.

So if, let's say, they went to a bunch of developers and said, hey, we want to do games, the developers are going to look at the hardware and ask, "what, like checkers?" Imagine facing a collection of machines from crippled graphics to a few with middle of the road graphics and being asked to write performance graphics for them. I've been deep into the graphics pipeline (trying to get high speed DSLR editing going) and I can tell you that it's a horror story.

This leaves out their complete failure to address bugs in the color management pipeline that have caused graphics processing logjams for several versions of the OS (so far... still not fixed...) They're far too busy jumping from one OS rev to the next, leaving the old one behind with bugs in it. "ooooo shiney!" is Apple's internal development mantra. In Leopard, they broke internal console messaging, particularly evident when using cron jobs. The bug was reported, they said they'd fix it... but they didn't. Leopard is still broken that way. You want a fix, you have to Google for it and find the page where it's been hacked to work the way it was supposed to in the first place. And then there are the "deprecated" APIs. "Here, use this thing!" then an OS rev later, "Oh wait, no, never mind, use this OTHER thing!" pfbbbt. I've had enough of that.

My macs, they're reasonable dev workstations and media consumption devices, but as game machines... they just can't cut it, they don't have the graphics power, and Apple's consistent track record of leaving the OS unstable while constantly moving the goalposts... as an Apple developer, I have learned to use as few OSX APIs as I can, and that's a key thing that keeps my software stable and reliable. I wouldn't try writing a game under these conditions. Games use *everything* and they use it hard.
