I have a Ph. D. in physics. My dissertation was in general relativity and quantum gravity. I went through a hell of a lot more schooling, and a hell of a lot harder schooling, than any physician. I also have a stepson who is an orthopedic surgeon and whose father and grandfather are also surgeons so I’ve had close opportunity to observe.

So shove it up your ass.

Yes not all doctors perform key hole surgery (which is a low risk surgery, but still risky) or any surgery. What i’m trying to say is doctors are not the only people in this world where they are in such position of high responsibility.

As much as there are many people who some called “brainwashed” to like Apple products no matter what, there are probably as many who are also “brainwashed” to hate Apple for no reason. 75% sounds a bit inflated….a source should be provided plus i believe a writer shouldnt generalize doctors based on one source. i dont think a resident physician’s observation is a very reliable source….

Go onto Wikipedia and search for “Wage Differentials” then you will see why doctors get paid more. Their higher level of human capital (training and education) as well as their higher level of responsibility, means that they should be remunerated appropriately. Of course a nurse works hard, but try telling a nurse to perform key-hole surgery or perform neurosurgery, if you can do that without training I’ll be bloody impressed

They are not the only people carrying the burden of life and death in their hands. Nurses do way more than doctors and get very little credit for it. There are also lifeguards, police officers, the army etc.

I’m a former IT pro, now in a completely different field (precision ammunition), with many highly-educated, scientifically oriented customers. One of my and my husband’s all-time favorite quotes came from a customer who was an oncologist. I was going to send him some tech data about ammo loads. I asked him if he used a Mac or a PC, so that I could send the data in the most compatible form. He replied that like us, he used both. My husband (the ammo expert) asked him which he preferred. His reply was, “I use a Mac when I want to get some work done. I use a PC when I want to look busy, but accomplish nothing. The damn thing will be updating itself for hours, and I can’t get any real work done until it’s through.” You can blast me as a fan-boy all you want, but that represents my 30+ years of experience exactly.

Charlitos is just an Apple Fanboy. At least every article he comments on he is defending Apple or accusing others of being Android/Windows fan-boys. Its getting old, have an open mind man. This article has a lot of BS to it, that has NOTHING to do with Apple itself. Its just a bad article, which is what everyone has come to realize. Are you a doctor? This article is ridiculous propaganda! As a doctor myself, I can tell you that 75% of the doctors I know do not own an Apple device. Many doctors I know do own iPhones, however I have noticed that recently many have switched to other devices for several reasons including poor reception inside hospitals (thanks to Apple’s poor antenna design and AT&T’s mediocre network) as well as the subpar browser experience/lack of flash capability in the browser when looking up info. (Yes, believe it or not, many medical websites haven’t gone HTML5 yet, especially sites that involve complex anatomy diagrams). Another thing doctors find very annoying is when a powerpoint presentation created on a Mac has issues when it’s converted over to a PC for the many conferences and presentations doctors host. Most doctors I know try to avoid apple computers, especially when creating presentations (although many people I know seem to own macbooks in addition to PC laptops).

Also, as an IT doctor liaison at my hospital, I have had the opportunity to speak with various vendors that create medical software and they have expressed to me extreme frustration regarding the development of Apps for iOS. As an example, one vendor I talked to had expressed interested in developing a radiology viewer app for the iPad but was stopped cold in their tracks when Apple refused to release official information regarding the device’s screen specifications (such as brightness and contrast ratio) which would be needed to determine if the device would be suitable for diagnostic use (as well as for the dreaded FDA approval). Due to senseless roadblocks such as this, currently we are left with dumbed-down “novelty apps” that may view images but aren’t suitable for diagnostic use and have many tools and options omitted. Many vendors are now opting for Android and web based alternatives.

As a doctor myself I think the above is a load of shit. Apple dominates the tablet market amongst doctors as much as it does the rest of the market for the same reason as the rest of the market. I know a lot of doctors who are investing in the Tab 8.9 etc because the iPad is too big to use conveniently in a hospital setting. I know many who bought one and brought it on rounds etc for about a week then realized it’s still too big be useful on the go left it at home soon afterwards.

I sold 10 transformers with keyboard docks to a doctor once. Offering just a closed-viewpoint here since I’m not in the medical profession, but the doctors I go to see are small practice and use computers to remote-desktop, which is done well with windows, macs, and androids. Sure iOS are very easy to use, that doesn’t make them the best choice, especially for people who need multiple uses from a device and are less inclined to spend more money than they have to.

Computers should be idiot proof. If a computer is too complex to accomplish the simplest task, this is not a bonus, it means some idiots who know programming but have absolutely not clue about user interface put something together. As a Software Engineer I appreciate and dig Apple products because it takes more dedication and effort to accomplish a hassle free experience than just throwing a bunch of half baked features into the platform for the user to figure them out themselves. Engineers and designers get paid to satisfy the end user not to make the end user do the work for them. If you are a techy guy you dont need a complex OS in your everyday tablet to prove it, if you think you do then you are probably not as knowledgeable as you may think.

this post is simply lame. people who use Apple products like them because they are idiot-proof, and many doctors, my colleagues, are in fact rather tech-retarded. also, the suffer from needing to have various status symbols, as they are the most vain profession there is. it has nothing to do with them knowing anything about technology.

I don’t know where they got that 75% number, but it seems a bit inflated to me. I also don’t trust the source of the material because he is some random doctor that posted basically what amounts to his own observations without referencing any data or study. He claims that most doctors use Macbooks and I would have to disagree because every hospital and physician’s office I have ever been to are 100% Mac-incompatible. All medical software is written for Windows machines with the exception of some telemedicine applications which are web based. There are new apps that interface with iPads, but they tend to be a less capable version of Windows based client software. This seems like the product of someone who hasn’t spent much time as a physician and none as an administrator.

Well yes, and I do agree this is most likely just to keep their positive spin rating high. However, it is quite interesting that 75% of doctors use iOS devices, and I think you put it a bit too broad there. They stated in the article the narrower reasons the doctors have than just that.

So, although their overall reasoning behind choosing Apple may be in-line with what most people give as a reason to get an iDevice, I think it’s pretty amazing that iOS has that high of a marketshare compared the countless number of other OSes there are out there.

I call BS on this article. As a current medical student and a member of a family full of doctors, I can tell you that the reasons stated above are random suppositions to justify an unnecessary article designed to keep Apple’s positive spin rating high and their name in the news. Or, to be more specific, the reasons stated are not unique to physicians. Rue has basically stated that doctors buy iPhones and iPads because they are well made and easy to use. Isn’t that why everyone who has ever bought one of those devices bought it? On the other hand, kudos for typing so well with one hand. I say that because I assume that the other hand was stroking Apple’s stem.
