I thought people completely stopped using Netflix for the most part last year when they started changing plans and jacking up prices. I don’t agree with Apple killing Netflix, as Netflix themselves have already done a good job of that. I honestly can’t or really see Apple killing off anything. Androids and even Windows phones are still selling okay, People still use PC’s, not everyone wants a flashless iPad or iPhone(or should I say, pay double for either), Apple TV never really took off, and I honestly don’t know anyone that buys or rents movies from the iTunes store. There’s still sites for seeing what you want to see when you want without coughing up a dime.

Not true at all, iCloud is not pre-installed on all our TV’s and Blu-Ray players so APPLE CANNOT KILL NETFLIX, plus apple charges you for everything, giving you zero free content, which most consumers hate. The only likely candidate to take over the market is Hulu, unfortunately a lot of older devices consumers have already bought don’t have Hulu installed so we will need to wait one more generation jump in digital technology before Hulu takes over. The only other competition is Google since Android platforms are quickly dominating the market. Within the next 5 years, iAnything will be only a fad long forgotten…

Nah. Apple TV is going to have Apple stuff, and Netflix stuff, and Hulu, and any other comers. Netflix needs to be careful not to get swept away by technological change, but they’re still in a good position.

Apple isn’t going into content money. That’s peanuts compared to their hardware, and running it as a standalone business would simply not be worth Apple’s while.

Apple could also make soft drinks with their logo, and they’d sell – but they aren’t going to do that, and similarly, content will remain added value for hardware sales. They say that at ever turn, at every quarterly call, but somehow people just don’t believe them. I have no idea why – it just doesn’t make sense for Apple to compete with the likes of netflix, other than ensuring great content finds its way onto their devices.

I could not disagree with you more. Apple products are designed for and meant for those that earn super dollars. An average Joe cannot afford to buy the over priced equipment from Apple on top of the over priced fees Apple will charge for this “streaming service”. Its time people woke up and you reported wih real facts and figures so we can see that as a reporter you are not another marketing mouth piece for Apple……. Besides from the obvious security and privacy risks of cloud computing I see no reason here to give up my Netflix streaming service

Hulu can’t displace Netflix either cause the only company the studios hate more than Netflix is hulu. Hulu is like their bastard step child who sits in the corner at christmas and waits for scraps. They don’t even have a full backlog of shows anymore. Only like the last 5 episodes or somthing like that.

Apple is way to expensive an option to compete with Netflix. With Netflix I get unlimited content for like 9 bucks a month. If I paid $.99/rental I would need a second job.

Granted the pricing may change if they go streaming, but not by a whole lot. Production companies and studios are shying away from Netflix for one reason, its not profiable enough for them. If apple is going to compete at Netflix’s price point, the studios aren’t going to work with Apple either.

Wait are you discussing all the people who took out tens of thousands of dollars in loans for a higher education to work jobs that barely pay them enough money to pay back all those loans? Yep that clearly indicates intelligence. “If I pay a lot of money for it, it means I’m smart!” . . . dumb ass . . . I’m sort of done with the ‘they have a higher degree which immediately infers some higher level of intelligence. Netflix customer support for silverlight is nonexistant. I have a MacBook and was not able to play movies after a recent silverlight update. I was told the error code I received (2105) could not be received for a Mac then told otherwise. I was also provided conflicting advice on which browser to use. eventually provided w a link to Microsoft to get support. 5 days since I sent Microsoft a detailed message, no response. I called Microsoft support. the first rep I spoke w was not familiar w Netflix. the second rep was uncertain if silverlight was compatible w a Mac. she offered to send me the same link Netflix had sent me last week. I said no thank you. I called back netfix and they said it was a Microsoft issue and would not issue me a credit for the 5 days I have not been able to watch Netflix. Netflix has no capacity to directly transfer customers to Microsoft and are not trained to problem solve for silverlight. long story short after 10 years w Netflix I cancelled my acount

What all these App-holes with their Jobsian view of technology dominance forget is that there are anti-trust laws in this country. In fact, I am quite surprised that they haven’t gone after them already for their phone apps being tied to the hardware, considering the market share of iPhones. Look how MS was excoriated simply for including a browser icon when you installed Windows. I guess being an FOO (mostly through large “donations” through lobbying) has its benefits…for now.

Besides Apple’s model is pay-per-view (so they can collect their 30-50% royalties for simply delivering a few bytes and having no stake in creating it). That only works for a select segment of the population, mostly porn, sports and wrestling.

Apple killing NetFlix? These columns centered on around Apple single-handedly wiping out everyting related to consumer products/services is hilarious. If your sole reason for streaming movies is to see the lastest new release then yes, stick to Apple Tv. Owning one personally I can more than vouch for the fact that Netflix is by far a better deal with more content. I for one am a movie addict so having access to a wide array of films from years past and current is the biggest thing. Apple does not come close. At $8 a month they will never offer the amount of content for that price. Now of course Netflixdoesn’t get every single brand new release which for that you can rely on Apple TV or any other streaming service that does new releases or RedBox. But, if your a movie/tv show person looking for the most variety… then there is Netflix.

um….. did the author notice that Netflix is available as one of the “channels” in Apple’s newest gadgets – AppleTV? anyone who has ever tried to check out their online streaming options will quickly tell you that paying for a per-view episode (apple’s iTunes or amazon) bites and is a deal killer when you can pay one fee per month for unlimited – like cable or netflix or hulu – 2. its the whole reason for having the service – otherwise, if I wanted to pay for each and every little thing I see I’d just go and rent videos (oh wait, they’re all out of business around where I live). I don’t want cable, and I don’t want to watch on my PC monitor on my desk, so streaming through a game console (or other device) works best. (Hulu stinks through the WII by the way and netflix is only a percent better). The only reason I might buy an AppleTV device —- would be to just have the netflix service in hd with a better interface – but I’ll wait until there are more reviews out. So now folks are quickly getting squeezed into just a few options – see a movie at the theater, wait to buy it at the store, pay for cable, “rent” it from iTunes or amazon, or hope that it may someday show up in hulu or netflix – that’s my only complaint about these last two – lack of titles and mostly “B” movies. So until the big corporate battles are finally over, us the poor consumer slobs have to pay through the nose as usual – or go without – and until they start feeling the impact in their pocketbooks, they’ll not change – unless someone takes this as an opportunity to seize market share …. time will tell

With the current streaming climate and Comcrap trying to prioritize traffic, maybe the streaming world needs an Apple to throw their weight around. Comcast wouldn’t dare taking on Apple because then we’ll see Apple Cable start popping up. If I send a movie Monday I get one Wednesday I send it back Thursday get another Saturday except if the week has a Holiday consistently for over 6 years, Blockbuster is a joke I tried a few times and always was worst than Netflix, Redbox two problems has to drive back a forth and the selection is to limited, is a good second option, This is why almost all of the customers that leave Netflix last year are back, Is the cheapest option. To beat them you have to offer a better service at the same price. It looks that it’s not easy task.

The only reason they made that exception was because the absolutely had NO CHOICE. At the time the iPod/iTunes was released, Apple had less than 2% marketshare on the desktop. iTunes only for Mac would have killed the iPod before it even launched.

This is awesome! Not a single poster agreed with the author and nor do I. I really thought that most of the world was becoming Apple lovers. I will never go bowing down to Apple (or any other elitist, socialistic company) for everything as many others have. I enjoy independence, ability to choose and being different. All those “artsy fartsy” types who live for Apple and all want to all be alike can have Apple! Of course there are pros and cons to this decision, like dealing with viruses, but Windows has gotten much, much better. Besides, like most in this economy, I can’t afford their products.
