Wild rumour!, but I agree that 32-37" TV's are too small for the consumers who will buy this product

Apple will have done extensive research into what TV's consumers are lapping up at the moment and the trend for the the coming 1-2 years, surely 40-46" TV's are the core bulk of TV's sold in this day and age. I'm sure it will still sell like hot cakes and change the TV game if it includes Siri and iCloud

But...

It's not the screen size that will stop me buying, it will be the inflated price tag to competitors, I don't need it to integrate with the iPhone I don't have or Wirelessly stream media from the iMac I won't be buying

I'll be sticking with my LED Sammy TV, Sky HD+, my laptop with HDMI out and only 1 mortgage to pay! (although Sky could do something much more sexy and slick with the EPG), I prefer to have a more finite control over my setup rather than be dictated to by Apple

Unless it comes in at £699 of course then Apple can have my Soul!

I know why Apple TV or iTV will be a hit.

FOXCONN...

Foxconn manufactures LCD televisions and its major clients consist of: Sammy, Sony, LG Electronics and here's a good one for Fanboy1974 Vizio. So as far as hardware goes, along with quality and price. Apple can compete plan and simple.

That's just the hardware.

Where apple takes over and kills the television game is by taking there current Apple TV and integrating it into the TV set and essentially making it another iOS capable device. With iCloud all your apps, movies, music, and Photos will automatically be on your iTV. Your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, and Nano (limited functionality) become a TV remote and a game controller just by connecting via WiFi/Bluetooth. Apples' software integration is what is going to put the Apple/i TV on the map along with Apples' great marketing skills. People who are already in Apple's ecosystem will eat this up and Fanboys probably stand in line to buy one. Apple and Siri are going to start taking over living rooms everywhere. But if Apple does produces its own TV line and can compete with same prices (+/-) as Sammy and other Top Dogs, I dont see how it could fail.

What's the problem in keeping the Apple TV a separate device so that it reaches more people? I just bought one of those Vizio 32 inch theater 3d tv's for $400 and it's great. Just don't see Apple matching Vizio or anyone else in value. Apple is so reluctant to drop prices on their merchandise.

It is exactly this kind of arrogance that I find pretty hard to bear. I was actually typing the above rant on an iPad2, and try out pretty much everything I can get my hands on. But, again, that hardly matters in your world my friend, as there clearly only two possible alternatives: apple is great or you don't have a clue. Nice witch hunt, keep it up!

Given their 27" Thunderbolt display costs 999$ ATM, that wouldn't be surprising. But price has never been an issue for the early bunch of Apple adopters.

IMO, if Apple don't build screens for anything above 37", it could be for a multitude of reasons, from too high production costs to complicated logistics. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that bigger screens aren't what the market necessarily want at the minute, be it Apple or Samsung. If we take a look at the UK market where I'm based, sales show that people don't invest in new tv sets like Samsung smart tvs. That's because they bought their last 'big' screen too recently. The same article (that I couldn't retrieve) showed that sales of smaller sets (24"/27") were growing at a faster rate than sales of new bigger 3D sets, showing that consumers were rather investing for a second set for the kitchen or the bedroom, privileging more ubiquity in the house rather than a new set with tens of unconvincing smart apps (that Samsung badly markets btw).

Going back to price, I don't think size will be the determining factor. I see rather a range split like what they did for MacBook and MacBook Pros. A 32" screen in white or black plastic for the price of an iMac, and a 37" in aluminum for the price of a MacBook Pro.

From a developer's perspective, I am much more interested in the processing capability of the device and how it will integrate in the current iOS ecosystem. Fact is, Samsung Smart TVs can't process anything close to what even a 3GS does, so forget about apps like games for instance. And until Apple can produce a so-called iTV where all (or at least a vast number of) the existing Apps for iPad, iPhone and iPod can be easily ported to it, there won't be any possibility to expand their ecosystem and therefore no way they will launch a tv set. Better invest my R&D money into a more powerful Apple TV.

Don:
It is very very stupid to be ranting against (or in pro) something that doesn't even exist yet. You can do it perhaps at your local bar, but you are suppossed to be a respectable journalist, and are doing it in a publicly-readable place, your workplace, where it should be a sancuary of fairness and impartiallity. You look like all those cheap web sites that are always ranting in favor of those "apple-killers" announced (promised) by Ballmer and other CEOs. Time goes by and they are ridiculized two years later when their promised stuff doesn't deliver.
Your rants look like they were expecting (or trying to get) a paycheck for F.U.D. favors.
But, oh, you are betting everything that your public forgets -and forgives- easily, right?

To put it simple: REPORT-ON-STUFF-THAT-YOU-CAN-VERIFY-OR-PROVIDE-VERIFICATION-SOURCES
...otherwise your column lowers to a "fanboy-ranting-blog" level. Shame.

Android is not a physical product. Forgive the pun, but provide an apples to apples comparison and you'll realize you've made no argument. Google branded just 1 product but even that was manufactured by a 3rd party - HTC. Android flavored OS products offer choice - whether it be h/w specs or s/w modification. The bulk of the Android OS lock-downs come from the carriers' requirements to the manufacturers; of course, some mfg's (HTC) like to keep you using their overlaid UIs. But all of those are easily overcome. And like I said, I really do appreciate those that are blind to the charms and trendiness of Apple's products. However, personally I choose to own products with more advanced feature sets and a malleable OS.

To elaborate on my original post, I disagree with any larger screen product that has such elaborate features burned into it as an all-in-one device. For example, a PC built into a monitor. Because, when you decide you want a bigger/better screen you're stuck tossing the PC part as well or left feeling handcuffed to a monitor that's been made into an over-complicated decision to upgrade. Open, component based systems better serve consumers' needs in our desire to upgrade [here read: resize]. Take the iOS out of the rumored TV and its just another TV on the market. 10 years ago this may have been a great idea but today technology advances way too fast to warrant this type of investment. If Apple were to arrange subsidizing a TV product through content providers, I'd rethink my position. But then again, when Google is already offering the Android OS for free for use in TVs to Vizio, Samsung, etc. there's hardly a reason to get excited for anything from Apple. Please do buy one yourself though and tell your friends/family to as well, thanks.

From what I understand, Apple's TV will be much more than just a TV. It will likely be completely integrated with your smartphone, your computer, icloud, etc. There's also rumors that it'll be voice controlled, so no more complicated remotes. Apple is very good at taking existing technology and refining it to make it much more user-friendly. Though I have to agree, they need to make larger models for this to succeed and I suspect they will despite these rumors. Apple would be foolish to limit their sets to 37" and below.

Zenbook is close and nearly identical in specs but Apple outperforms it in nearly every category as per CNETS performance tests. Also, a new redesigned air is expected in a few months which will likely raise the bar again.

There is a misconception that Apple products are way overpriced but what a lot of people don't realize is that Apple does a much better job of integrating it's software with it's hardware while doing a myriad of other little things that ultimately make the user experience much more enjoyable. So while the primary specs can often be compared to cheaper non-apple products, actual performance and user experience is often much better. Whether these little things are worth the price is debatable.

Furthermore, Apple products have a much greater resale value than just about any other tech product out there. Case and point, the Iphone. People complain how expensive it is, but I have gotten every single version of the phone each year, and have yet to pay a dime for a phone since the first model came out. When a new model comes out, I sell my old iphone on ebay and use that money to buy the new one. AT&T gives you a partial discount after a year, and it's usually just enough so that the sale of the old iphone covers the cost of the new phone. No other phone holds it's value like the iphone. Same goes for macbooks. Used windows notebooks drop quickly in value, but the demand for used macbooks keeps prices at premium levels for a long time.

Reporting opinions on a smart buying decision based on a rumor, from a source that is completely NOT credible, is stupid. The article might as well be why an Apple developed French Fries and Milk Shakes probably won't taste good.

Truth is, Apple and others haven't mastered the smart TV. They have think tanks that spend thousands of hours thinking of compelling technology to bring out a differentiated product. What those features are, we won't know unless Apple reveals them during a keynote launch. Nobody knew about the iPad till it was within a few weeks of the announcement. They succeeded where others failed.
The first Apple TV was considered a failure, but its current incarnation holds the large market share of streaming devices. It didn't blow up the TV streaming market like Apple had envisioned.
The chips are stacked against Apple on TVs, especially companies.like Sony are losing money on them. If Apple were to develop a TV, I'm sure that they will have something to make them compeling and not define them in the way consumers think of TVs today. Personally, if it tops out at 37", it will not displace my home theater set unless it spits out gold coins.
