It's supply and demand, you gotta keep an equilibrium between the two.
Short games are low cost are popular amongst PC gamers (because they expect lower prices to cover the cost of the PC, which eliminates the license cost.)
Consoles gamers will turn to costy game at high cost (because they can't afford to pay the license 500 times)

I think black ops is definitely worth the $60 with the online, story, and zombies it's almost 3 games in one. Assassins creed is a great story and I'm really into the game but there almost to short to be worth $60, it makes up for it with the great graphics. If you don't want to pay $60 for the game wait to buy it used.

You seriously need to proof read your articles. Actually, more importantly, proof read your titles.
The length of a game isn't that important to me - it's the quality of the story that counts. If a game offers you an amazing journey spread over dozens of hours of gameplay, like Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy or Yakuza, then i'd gladly invest the time to watch the story unfold.

On the flip side of that, there are games that can offer you the same quality of a story, spread over a shorter amount of time, like Uncharted, God Of War, Heavy Rain or Assassin's Creed, in which the "Epicness" of the adventure can be just as great, if not greater, than longer games.

In short, as long as the story gives you a worthwhile and memorable adventure, the length of time required to get there should be irrelevant.

Heres how i look at what developers should do when it comes to quality focus on thier games:

1- alot of work on thier game engine
2- drastic play testing to make sure they work properly
3- put in 5 to 7 hours of single player content in
4- release the game
5- then put out DLC for extra levels/single player content every three to four months
6- get another development team to help you develop DLC
7- get a spare development team to understand code of the game engine before working on DLC
8- dont make a direct sequel unless you find a way to dramatically upgrade the game engine
9- stick with the game you worked on and only focus on patching/firmware/adding DLC on that game

Should a 3 hour movie subsequently cost double as a 90 minute movie? Are you going to splice hairs like that? Going with your reasoning then why the hell would you ever pay 10 dollars to see a movie in a theatre when its less then 2 hours long. You're being cheated out of your money, right? No. Same thing applies with video games.

Unreal Tournament 3 - great multiplayer, crappy single player
Uncharted Drake's Fortune - great single player, crappy multiplayer
I'm sure there are tons of other examples of games that focus on one experience more than another. It's nothing new. As long as the customer knows what they are buying, I say that's ok.
These days, I don't pay $60 for any game, long or short, and paying by the hour of play time is not ideal. Imagine paying $100 for a Zelda or Assassin's Creed game, yeah, didn't think so.
While I see where a few of the comments here come from, I think that personal attacks and negativity are equally unproductive.

I personally enjoy both. However I wouldn't place COD within short play spectrum. Short gameplay in the likes of Osmos or Plants vs zombies is probably more accurate.

Long games would be Fallout:New Vegas or Mass Effect which draws a rich story line and multiple choices. I've always leaned towards these title myself as I feel a greater attachment to the content and the story line. It makes it much more enjoyable when you decide your paths and later have those choices come into question.

COD really should just remove the single player portion all together or just make a movie and get on with it. Short games often utilize repetitive actions or utilize an addictive element to grab the gamers attention really quick. In rare circumstances they also have the player thinking. Which well... COD is more a roller coaster, where you play on rails and sometimes articulate your arms. While its fun, its one of those titles you'll never really remember.

What a narrow minded article. 5hrs for 60+ bucks and your happy! Make no wonder developers are getting away with such nonsense for campaigns these days with idiots like this trying to justify it. A game is only too long when it is poorly done, repetitive etc. That could happen at 2 hrs or 20. If your too stupid to realize that your are tossing good money away for 5 hr games that should only cost 10 bucks, it doesn't mean the rest of us are so gullible. 5 hr games are merely a developer trying to make a quick buck...which I would not have an issue with if they were only 10 bucks.

Then there are still a good many of us that do not even care about multiplayer at all, but we end up paying for it don't we. I can tell you one thing, when I hear a game has a 5 hr campaign, I do not buy it, period.

I think length does matter immensely, but I agree that longer is not necessarily better. Case in point (and I expect the flaming to commence immediately) I grew up on the Halo series and only later was able to play Half-Life 2 (the so-called greatest game ever by Maximum PC). I would be inclined to agree with them if it wasn't for HL2's lackluster gunplay and, consequently, the length of time that I had to be involved in said gunplay in order to advance the magnificent story scenes.

Now, mind you, this is opinion and I know I am biased to love what I grew up with, and I do not hold Halo to be some paragon of FPS perfection. But I do think there is a virtue in a more succinct story in genre's like FPS's that would otherwise have to introduce new and exciting gameplay innovations every hour or so to keep the game fun (and not just interesting, which the HL2 universe did well). Yes, I can already hear the "gravity gun!" and "ant-lion!" calls coming, and a lot of people loved them but I guess I didn't, which made such segments painful for me and only intensified the stress I already had of spending so much time shooting just to get to hear Alyx explain a scene.

There is definitely opportunity to implement longer stories in other genres, though. While they are often rehashes on the same gameplay and character growth, the Legend of Zelda series almost demands a longer story that makes you feel like you've actually put in effort to make your avatar a real hero. Same goes for open-world games like GTA and Morrowind; I've probably put over 500 hours into Morrowind and I just started another character up last night, and it is because the gameplay and character development allows the story to be interesting/bearable through extended play time and multiple run-throughs.

While they are often rehashes on the same gameplay and character growth, the Legend of Zelda series almost demands a longer story that makes you feel like you’ve actually put in effort to make your avatar a real hero. Same goes for open-world games like GTA and Morrowind; I’ve probably put over 500 hours into Morrowind and I just started another character up last night, and it is because the gameplay and character development allows the story to be interesting/bearable through extended play time and multiple run-throughs.

Honestly i think your a waste of space and money on this website, and your stories are pointless and ill thought out. I see it as my personal goal to have slashgear remove you from their employed ranks, Who cares about game length prefrences. its pointless to have a long campagin for a FPS compared to an RPG where you need that time. your comparing apples and oranges in the same damn pot. your an idiot. stop your nonsense

Honestly, I'd say there's room for both kinds... solid, indepth, complex story, and lighter faster fare.

I just wish they were priced accordingly.
