What you need to know about Satya Nadella's security speech

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shares plans this week for a Cyber Defense Operations Center (CDOC) to keep user data safe. Nadella suggested that this facility will have staff on-duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will have direct access to "thousands of security professionals, data analysts, engineers, developers, program managers, and operations specialists throughout Microsoft to ensure rapid response and resolution to security threats." If and when threats are found and law enforcement is needed, this new CDOC will work hand-in-hand with Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit.

Microsoft's "new security posture" might look obvious. They'll aim to protect data, detect any possible threats, and respond when needed. What's most important here is the fact that they're making clear their intention to protect user data "across all endpoints."

We live in a world where we store our data on other people's computers (the cloud) and use miniature computers with all of our important information, placing said computers in our pockets. These smartphones need to have as much security in them as a datacenter. It's all important.

"We're taking a principled approach with strong commitments to make sure that our customers can trust digital technology that they use," said Nadella.

"We have four pillars to this. When it comes to privacy, we will ensure your data is private and is under your control. When it comes to compliance, we will manage your data in accordance with the law of the land. We will also be transparent about both the collection of data and the uses of data."

"And lastly, we will ensure that all your data is secure."

To that end, Nadella showed how Windows 10, Office 365, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS) are all implementing new and enhanced security features for the public and for enterprise users. Microsoft's challenge is to turn the $1 billion invested in this new "holistic" security strategy and make it stick.

Above you'll see Azure Alerts. Microsoft wants to keep the cloud safe first and foremost. Once data is safe once you've uploaded it, you'll be able to access it wherever you go. Those devices need to be secure as well. The networks that deliver the data need to be made safe, as do the transfer points. Microsoft's task is to keep the whole path, start to finish, secure and sound.
