Very similar. Mario was replaced by some other gay figure. If sony did not patent Trinitron, John Sculley would have done so... All things come up at various locations at similar times in history. Real pain in the Ass is Disney here. Since Disney managed to get IP rights running for the same time as the age of Mickey, we are all screwed. IP should end at 10-15 years. So it would be best if Nintendo would have lost IP on Mario by now, so the endless recycling would come to an end.

You started off with Id games, and the Id folks first got their start making what was a Mario clone for the PC. Whether or not you played the games is immaterial, the games you played were brought about through the influence of Mario.

i dont intend to be picky, but thats all pc games... tho, i think the article suggests gaming as a whole anyway.

my take on this:

i think gaming halls would be still pretty popular and the gaming landscape would be flooded with high end, per-game-dedicated gaming machine in those gaming halls, delivering us a supreme experience, not quite possible in today's standardized api's and all-purpose machines that are today's pc's... i mean, when the xbox came out, it was a p3 inside... at the time when p4 and athlon were quite superior...

in essence, had mario not been and the home gaming scenario not happened, the gaming halls would dominate gaming. (comparing to a dedicated machine, neither the pc or nor the consoles back then were anywhere near to a match in performance and immersion...

and to be a little blunt:

even tho mario was a great part in my childhood, i somehow wish he had not been... could have been a nice gaming landscape... :3

I am a hardcore gamer which means I started gaming with games like wolfenstein, doom, quake and half life. I can't imagine what the industry would be without Half Life!!! That's the game which defined the gaming culture and set a prominent tone for it. Mario never was a biggy for me. Sry M fans .....

I think it’s pretty tough to try and say that little plumber hasn’t added a great deal to the industry and culture of gaming. But to quantify exactly how much, or to hypothesize what would be altered by the Mario franchises’ absence, is challenging.

Agreed. Good article. Nintendo is and was a very innovative company.
Palm and Blackberry was like Nintendo in the "mobile" world... Otherwise, there wouldn't be all the other wildly successfully smartphone companies that we know of today...
