Man do I wish that was a good solution. But nowhere in my wireless network config have I had greater issues that with ATV2. True local storage support would be great.

I bought one of these. It’s ok. Not great. I have a lot of movies scanned into H.264, and it streams them fine. But the menus make it clear that Apple sees these movies on “your computer” as second class.

This product is all about selling stuff. That’s what is up front. That’s what is first. BUY MORE STUFF. That’s what turns people off about this product. More than anything I have ever seen from Apple, it is affirmatively about BUY MORE STUFF. The ipad and iphone have the same effect, but are much more subtle about it (having an “app store” and a movie store and a book store. For the apple TV, the top level menus for everything is BUY MORE STUFF. And then, BUY MORE STUFF.

It turns me off.

I have an Apple Tv 2 an iPad and an Airport router. I have used mirroring for playing games but its sluggish. Having the games on the Apple Tv itself would be extremely better. It would play just like a game console.

No not be a hobby it needs to be able to connect to network shares and no long have to rely on iTunes. My JB’d ATV2 with firecore does just this and rocks.

AppleTV add Hulu add Amazon or better add subscription fee and stop charging .99 for a tv show i can watch on-demand through my cable provider or Netflix for free..

As a start they should stop crippling functionality that already exists. While I have no problem JBing my ATV2 to install Plex/XMBC so I can stream from my media server, I’m sure other “less” techy people wouldn’t mind the same functionality out of the box. I’d love as well to be able to plug an external HD into the thing (my cheapo BR player can do this!), as well having a built-in web-browser and native bluetooth mouse/keyboard support.

I don’t think Google TV is the big threat to Apple TV that you think it is. I think they can both coexist and succeed just as both iPhones and Android phones coexist just fine.

I think the biggest threat to either one is game consoles. Tens of millions of people buy game consoles because they want to play games. They are going to buy those consoles no matter what. But if those game consoles can access all these video services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and many more already people will question whether they need another device to do it too.

Apple has a slight advantage in this regard due to the Apple/iTunes ecosystem.

Umm, adding an iPad or iPhone as a controller is pretty much the same thing as flicking the mirror function on in AirPlay.

“I’m a little confused.” I think you are. Jobs’ comment that the Apple TV was a hobby was not aimed at the device itself or how the consumer should view it, but it was a comment on how serious Apple was about the device; in terms of resources and resulting sales. A hobby is something you pursue in your leisure time with money left over after paying for the important stuff.
