I received Mafia II with my GTX470. The graphics are fantastic. I have seen no bugs up to level 14. It is coherent and amazing. (I could use an easier to drive car-that haunts the game industry for years now)
This games graphics on the GTX470 and GTX 260 are better than any XBOX 360 games I have seen to date. You can put down those folks, but they are doing a hellofa better job than us americans that invented this technology in the first place! Get with it america, we are getting behind!

Great games used to come along and invent a genre, or redefine it. Doesn't really happen much these days.

Half Life 1/2 gave you a story line that was head and shoulders above previous games.
Populous invented the god game as we know(knew) it.
Sim City invented the building game as we know it.
Championship Manager (Now Football Manager) created the level to be judged against for sports management sims.

If a game is being created in an existing genre it must be ;
a) a fantastic story
b) have innovative controls or level creation
c) superb graphics and sound

If it's not these, it's a 'rehash'. You can forgive film and tv for not being groundbreaking as a game is much more of an investment, in both time and money. You maybe cannot forgive a game of such failings.

If you add to this you need to balance c) with the available hardware that people have then it can be difficult for talented people to create something special. Look at Duke Nuke Em. Best bet is a) as it will always attract gamers.

‘And they represent the “old school” of gaming where quality mattered more than sales.’

Even I want to know that. I can't imagine where a game publishing company is only thinking about gamer's pleasure not money. I am fed-up with this old-school myth. Fuck the myth, wake up. It's 21st century mate, things gone through changes ... decades of changes.

I think at least one notable exception is Half-Life 2. Sure you can say it's not a current game, but it was nothing short of fantastic!
