Interesting approach Ben, I agree when you say that the change is beyond devices, but at the concept of computing. I've been working with graphics and web, and always needed powerful computers, but lately I've been using cms, cloud storage and other online resources that provides me to work across different devices and then focus more on the essence of the experience than some details. And i'll tell you, I'm enjoying! We feel less attached to a device as we feel able to use different ways to do what we need.

"the reality is tablets represent a “convenient computing” solution and aren’t replacements for notebooks or desktops quite yet."

Well the truth is notebooks aren't total replacements for desktops and netbooks aren't total replacements for notebooks or desktops but they count them as PCs.

The reality is companies like Gartner and IDC charge money for reports they prepare and breaking out Tablets as a whole new category means they get to sell a whole new report.

A 2% drop in 1 quarter where Intel released and then pulled Sandy Bridge, does not a trend make. Analysts, pfff. Looking for a new trend (tablets) so people buy their reports and bloggers fishing for clicks.

This seems like sensationalism to me. Yes, sales decreased, but that doesn't change the fact that 84 million PCs were sold in 3 months. That's a huge amount of computers being sold.

Have you ever used a leatherman tool? It gets the job done, but not as smoothly as a tool designed for a specific use.

Smart phones and tablets are primarily for communication and entertainment, although many users want them to do everything....but they serve the majority of consumers needs...send e-mail, text, twitter, check Facebook, look at pictures or movies, etc.

PC's are capable of doing everything you would expect a computer to do.....but they are not as sexy or streamlined, and I think most users understand that.

So, as the world of tech evolves, many users will be satisfied with just a smart phone, some will also want a tablet, others will also keep upgrading their laptops and desktops along with all their other favorite devices.

I like the beginning thought process that you went through. However I think that your last question is a little off base...

The trend hasn't been towards multiple devices giving the same experience. Most consumers want one piece of tech (smartphone, tablet, netbook) that is easily portable and can do all the tasks that they ask of it. I think where you were going is saying that all their data would be available on the form factor of their choice through cloud services.

Interesting take, Ben, one that we'd subscribe to here at Xi3 Corporation, especially since we see people moving more and more of their data to the cloud. It also makes tons of sense since the Xi3 Modular Computer can be used almost exclusively as a cloud-based computer. We should talk. (politis at Xi3 dot com)
