Some good info. My experience at Apple stores has actually been all bad. The "salespeople" tried to push me into buying a laptop I didn't want. When I asked if I could use an ipod without itunes he got pretty rude and (almost) threatened me. I have since purchased a few PCs and couldn't be happier.

Might I comment, coming from a non apple employee who is rather tech savvy, that the experts in computers aren't buying from the Apple store. They buy online, where they can construct their masterpiece. That being said... I from a consumer and sales rep(work in retail) can understand the mentality for the CUSTOMER to want to buy Applecare. This is why. YES you can always buy it later. But why? Why fool around when buying later doesn't extend your warranty. Customers go to apple employees for ASSISTANCE. For the Mac buyer, they are looking for luxury. They are looking for convenience in their experience. To buy this goes along with that strategy and thought line. It just makes sense.

As far as problems. There are always problems. It is technology you obstinate little naysayer. I am sorry that you had to install itunes on the iphone. WHYEVER would you have to do that? Hmmm, updated functionality? It is how the OS works bud. A soccer mom can understand that.

If you are set against a company then ok...That is totally your right and opinion. But don't be dumb about it. Don't pit yourself against what realistically is a not flawless but well intentioned customer service based company.

Thank you.

I think the advice to buy the warranty on the first day is complete crap. What happens if you accidentally break your computer in the first year and it's not covered by warranty? Then you just wasted all the money on AppleCare for nothing. And I sure as heck wouldn't buy AppleCare directly from Apple when you can get it all over online for about half price. Buy your warranty and activate it on week 51. Article reads like you're still working there.

Ditto on the Thinkpad comment - no need for extended warranty. You get a detailed maintenance manual on how to service your laptop and since Thinkpads are pretty much modular, you can get any part cheap on eBay. Apple? Agree on the necessity for the warranty - it WILL break and you don't wanna have to pay to get it fixed.

Oh lookie, slashvertisement! "Apple meets or exceeds expectations?" Seriously, after 10 minutes setting up my gf's new iPhone 3G, I was ready for the "Will it blend?" test, and that's from an experienced computer geek. Needs to install itunes to work (it's a phone fer...), no copy paste (great for long wifi passwords), exchange client crash leaves contacts inaccessible untill you find a network (business phone you say?), and finally the bloody thing bricks the phone functionality on the first OS upgrade. Yeah, I get it, you covered that with "There are rare exceptions...".
Oh, and BTW, the first time I walked into an Apple store, the staff were trying to convince an elderly lady that an entry-level macbook would not suffice for her needs (being browsing the internet and reading mail). Right, "I think these are mostly isolated incidents...", good catch :-)
