Not really. Don’t forget Apple and Pen Computing competed before Palm came along. Apple shelved Newton and I don’t know whatever happened to Pen Computing; both companies released their products to market before they where ready.

If WebOS was the most secure mobile OS with the most privacy, then this would make me seriously consider buying another WebOS device in the future. I’m getting tired of the vulnerabilities and privacy invasions of other platforms.

They could keep running the app catalog. I also think they could get into some partnerships with service providers to build their service directly into the operating system. Microsoft seems to throw money at companies willing to use Bing. They already have Bing maps.

Go watch video on the Treo 650 and try to say, with a straight face that the rows and columns of icons on a touch screen doesn’t look familiar… ;)

The Treo even had thumbnail images-something someone layer obtained IP for even though prior art existed.

Idevices are a new OS that looks exactly like the old Palm OS GUI.

As Steve said, Apple took what others invented and brought it to a bigger audience.

The question I have is … which open source license? This does matter. I don’t care who makesthe hardware as we can put WebOS on any hardware assuming the platform is open or opened…

I can see how the customer benefits, I can see how the OEMs benefit(it will be cheaper than Android because of the patent protection), but I can not for the life of me figure out how HP benefits.

Google’s rationalization is clear, getting people online causes them to see Google’s adverts, which increases Google’s revenue, but how does HP benefit? They are committing capital to maintaining and developing it….

Open Source is fine, but under what license. GPL-v2, GPL-v3, LGPL, apache or some thing completely new that would be incompatible with every other open source license out there. I would like to see it being licensed with something compatible with android, so they can share pieces of code and just make all of us happy.

Unlikely. Palm basically invented mobile computing and the smartphone. The patent portfolio behind webos is very deep.
