It's in Apple's terms of use. If you have an app that allows users to purchase content through your app, you must use Apple's payment services and give apple 30%. Hence the reason Google Books, Amazon Kindle, and other apps have removed the ability to purchase content in their apps and instead tell you to go to their website to purchase content and just view it through the ipad app. So it's being "forced" because Apple will remove your app as a breach of your agreement with Apple if you do not comply.

Thus the web app scenario many are turning to, and for good cause, IMO. As another commenter already stated, going to a platform independent situation is ideal. It will be cheaper for businesses in the long run to maintain a single version of their business software and not have to bow to or beg Apple for any changes they want made. I completely agree with that.

Just to give some explanation to this story: Apple's developer policies require that apps that have subscription services "must" channel through Apple's "in-app" purchasing system. Apple instituted this change many months ago. It's a two fold thing: 1) Apple wanted a share of that revenue. 2) Apple wanted to provide users with simple and secure accessibility to any app's services.

It's about time we start getting away from this platform-specific app frenzy, and back to web-centric "apps" that are more platform neutral. Android has been so tantalizing to me as an elegant way to use web-based apps, but its other limitations and problems have been more than enough frustrating to take the bloom off that rose (and that goes more so for the higher-walled garden of Apple which is the focus of this article).

Maybe you could explain why being "an app" would "force" someone to pay Apple. I don't comprehend that at all, and I'm sure many other readers also do not.
