Volvo launches Spotify streaming globally in 90 series cars this spring

Volvo has announced something that fans of music will appreciate at MWC 2016 in Spain. Volvo has announced that this spring it will launch Spotify streaming in certain cars globally. To begin the Volvo vehicles that get the streaming service will include the XC90, S90, and V90 models.

Volvo and Spotify worked together to design the user interface for the Volvo cars so that it feels familiar to users of Spotify elsewhere. The streaming service is controlled from the large tablet-like touchscreen that is offered in the XC90, S90, and V90 cars. The tie up between Spotify and Volvo means that no smartphone is needed to stream music as you drive.

To use Spotify in the Volvo cars will require a Premium subscription. Buyers will get a 30-day trial subscription to the service and the app for Spotify in the Volvo cars will be available everywhere Spotify is offered.

"As before you can still play music from your Spotify smartphone app in your car, or you can use the in-car app, which will contain all of your favourite playlists, artists and albums. And with Spotify's ability to deliver extremely high quality streaming it has never been a better time to get the most out of the Bowers & Wilkins sound system in our new XC90, S90 and V90," said Björn Annwall.

Volvo uses the Sensu interface in its cars to deliver search functionality that non-native applications are unable to offer. The Volvo integration also takes advantage of the Spotify Connect function allowing passengers to use mobile devices as a remote control for the Spotify in-car app. The smartphones don't have to be connected to the car to use that remote control function.
