VLC for Android beta arrives in US and Canadian Play Store

Around this time in 2012, the beloved media player VLC arrived in the Google Play Store as a beta offering for Android users. Though it has been available since then, US and Canadian users have been relegated to grabbing the APK from the VLC website and installing manually, something that has finally come to an end.

This marks the seventh pre-release of the app for Android, and with it comes some new improvements, including hardware acceleration being enabled by default on Android 4.3 and higher, increased subtitle support, accelerated software decoding, audio equalizer fixes, fixed SD card detection, and more.

Users in the United States and Canada are now able to grab the beta app from the Google Play Store directly, no longer having to jump through the APK hoops. When downloaded (or updated), users will be able to choose between a light or dark theme.

The app works for those running x86 and ARMv7 Android devices, and as with the desktop version, it supports a myriad of video and audio formats and different features. You'll need at least Android 2.1 or higher to run the app.
