The one major drawback of the contract-free iPhone is that you’re still bound to Virgin Mobile whether there’s a contract involved or not.

Let’s say you have a VM iPhone, and one day you decide you want to walk away from them. Fine, you won’t have to pay any exit fee, but you will have a $650 paperweight that is useless unless and until you return to Virgin Mobile.

You’re still tied to a carrier – it’s just a different kind of rope.

To all those asking if they can buy a used sprint iPhone and use it on virgin mobile….no, you can not. The way virgin mobile works is you HAVE to use THEIR phones.
Also be warned, their customer service is absolutely atrocious. But don’t get me wrong, it is still a terrific deal.

I have the Motorola Triumph and I still pay 25 dollars a month because I have been a customer for almost 4 years. I’m looking forward to seeing the iPhone with Virgin Mobile.

I’m really curious if you’ll be able to buy an unlocked 3G or 3GS, say off Amazon for around $150-300 and be able to use it with Virgin… You would end up saving so much money, if you don’t mind an older generation phone and the Sprint network.

I thought that all CDMA iphone 4S had sim card trayss in them. And for $650, it better be unlocked, so can’t you “drop, say, a T-Mobile USA SIM into it instead”, but at that price, you may as well buy it unlocked from the Apple directly

The major problem still remains with Virgin Mobile though, which is that it uses Sprint’s network, which is terrible. I chose Sprint because they offered me an iPhone with the lowest security deposit of all the carriers, but I will be switching to another carrier soon enough. Still, these are great prices compared to every network.

Been a VM member for a year. I don’t see how EVERYONE doesn’t go with them. Their monthly fees are SOOOO much lower than everyone else, and with the contract and shady fees and extra costs.

Now that we have the iPhone, we also have one of the latest and great phones instead of settling for lower-tier Android phones. Win-Win!!!

Here’s the thing, how much do I really need to use the internet while on the road? Certainly not while driving and more likely than not while I’m at the office. I find that turning the WiFi function on my Virgin Mobile Android phone means I get super fast internet whenever I am home or near a free wifi hotspot. For $35 a month I have never been happier.

Sometimes you get what you pay for but other times that doesn’t apply. I pay $59.99 a month on Red Pocket mobile with an unlocked Galaxy Nexus. I get damn good data speeds, unlimited text and voice calls. GSM, no contract, no quality issues. Prepaid isn’t for everyone, but more people should at least consider it.

Totally agree with this. I am a Virgin Mobile user and I think the monthly rates are a great deal. Between the iPhone and the EVO 4G V. Virgin will have many new customers soon. Customers are going to question why they are paying $85 a month when they can pay $35. The question is, will the Sprint network be able to handle it?
