1. AT&T will use it to show regulators: “See! There is still competition.” When really there isn’t because Virgin is just a Sprint subsidiary.
2. I think AT&T would like nothing more to get rid of as many “cheapskate” T-Mobile customers as possible so they can do what they do best: jack up rates, curtail services, and count their money instead of reinvesting proportionally in infrastructure. The T-Mobile customers would be the ones most likely to complain. AT&T doesn’t strike me as a company that would have any qualms with “firing” customers that aren’t profitable enough for them.
