The unemployment rate is every bit as bad as 1933, we simply aren't reporting it the same way. We have hundreds of thousands of Americans looking for good work. Verizon should put an ad in the paper for 45,000 jobs and fill these vacancies now!! Let's get this economy back on track!!

And for those VZ Wireless workers complaining... ummm.. Join the UNION!... AT&T Wireless is part of CWA.. why aren't YOU??

Hmmm.. maybe b/c you sit in an airconditioned store all day?
Maybe b/c your not out climbing poles or crawling around bed bug infected homes all day?
Maybe b/c you don't put your life/health in jeopardy every day just so your community can have communications?
or
Maybe its because you enjoy many of the same benefits that the landline workers do... all because CWA fought for what is right!

What am I thinking.. your complaining Union workers are Lazy.. but yet... this little article probably interrupted your game of Solitare/Facebook.. etc...

Keep in mind.. this is a fight for the middle class.. the same middle class that is quickly shrinking in America. Don't blame the Union for the high prices you pay... its not their fault that Greedy CEOs can't seem to live on the same amount of money the rest of us do, pay the same amount of taxes the rest of us do.. (they pay NOTHING!)...

We can all sit back and do nothing but say "F the Union" just like you do.. but then.. in a year.. we can all sit back and blame the Gov't for giving freebies away to BigBusiness and charging us more and more $$$ in taxes and toll hikes...

If you've watched anything of the news within the past month.. you realize that Gov't was fighting about their budget / US Credit... we're in debt up to our ears - and China owns a big part of us... but - do we see anyone going after Big Business telling them they have to pay their share? Nope.. we'll just extend our gov'ts credit line (don't you wish your Credit Cards would extend your credit line when you don't have the $$ to pay them?? ).. then we'll go after Jane & Joe Shmo who were too stupid to fight for a union against Big Business...

Honestly now... if any of you Non-Union people knew anything you'd realize that CWA is not on strike for additional.. they are on strike b/c VZ wants to take away what they have. Union members are looking at a $20k pay cut! Is that fair? Not when the new CEO just gave himself a $25M raise! Not when VZ is releasing press reports stating they have their highest earnings since 2008!

Bob Master says the CEO makes $18 mil and Anita Long says he makes $23 mil.

You are the CEO?!? First, spend some time on learning how to proof-read. Your odd statement sounds a lot like the (im)famous sign over the gate that read "Work will set you free". When your employees work harder do you pay them more?

The first of many questions I have to your response is, "what are you paying $2,300/month for?" Health insurance? Phone Service? Are you the business owner or the worker making this vague statement? Obviously, your not spending the money on lessons on how to critically think about issues that effect anyone besides yourself.

Do you really think the workers are to blame for missed appointments and poor service? Do you really think that our desire for a non-hostile work place and a middle-class wage is an unreasonable demand from Verizon Management who earns 300% more than the rank & file?

What a red-herring you present: "…you knew what the job was…" How about yourself in that statement? You were surprised about having to pay for something? Who twisted your arm?

It is evident that you only hear what you want to believe and do not seek out all of the facts. If you did, you would know that the union has only demanded reasonable bargaining from Verizon. So far Verizon has only lied about who is "walking" away from the table without bothering to mention the unreasonable demands they are making. They demand to rescind 50 years of bargaining rights that never were given freely, but hard earned. When I walk the picket line is means No Pay now for rights later on. Do you enjoy vacations privileges, worker safety rights, child labor laws and competitive wages? If so, thank a union.

Big Business in our country has never been known for anything except personal greed. If you are the small business owner, ask yourself, did Big Business help me get started or was it in spite of them that I succeeded?

Yes, you should. But rather than fighting someone else's collectively bargained benefits, why aren't you and more Americans standingup and saying "we want what they've got!" a corporation runs on it's people, and it's people deserved to be fairly compensated.
keywords. SMALL BUISNESS. I agree with you in the fact that it is not easy for the small buisness owner and i applaud you for being a fair person, however I just want to disfigure the idea that they have any hardships like that you deal with. This company robs America (and UK) by not paying any taxes. They are registered as Vodaphone(a European Telecommunications Company) and in Europe Vodaphone(one of the largest carriers) is registered as Verizon in the US. THIS MEANS THEY AVOID TAXES IN BOTH COUNTRIES!!! that is why our kids' teachers are getting laid off is because companies like Verizon set the example to the rich(over 200,000) that they dont have to pay taxes. heck i wouldnt if i knew a company that has over 20,000 retail stores just in the US that has trash pickup, police, and all the other services that taxes pay for , who tells uncle sam to f*** off. Next time you activate a phone there,(cause i got a feeling your a verizon guy casue they are a rip and you would not be one the defese at all for these crooks) tell them that you dont want to pay taxes on the full value of the phone (usually 30-50 dollars) cause thats going straught to the CEO. True trolls

I don't get what is so bad about unions existing, but I can understand how a union can be bad, confusing? Yes. The way I see it unions are set up to protect workers, so when a worker signs up, they know the conditions, and the conditions they agree to work for with the company should change for the worse for the worker when the company sees fit. At the same time, I can understand that unions may be corrupt, and thus instilling the beleif that all unions are bad because they defend lazy work, ie, union workers do the least amount of work for the most money, which is how everyone really is, union or non-union I'd assume. I don't get why there isn't anything to keep unions in check, some middle man between the company and the union, to make sure union workers aren't taking advantage of the word "union", and the company not taking advantage of its workers... I can see the scenario here where, Verizon has been, and agreed to upon highering these people, that they will be provided some benefits in exchange for their labor. Payment, imo, doesn't just equat to cash, but also what pensions and other stuff they're arguing for, but at the same time, these workers also agreed to work the conditions Verizon has set for them. The problem people see with this is, these workers are taking advantage of the union and doing as little work possible, while the union defends their paychecks, but at the same time, the other side of it is, Verizon is lowering what was agreed upon when highering these people. See, I'd have no problem if the Union workers were all doing their work, but why should the people who do little work ruin it for the union workers who actually maintain their work ethics and do the work just as hard as anyone else? These are broad generalizations that people are making that all union workers are lazy. I'd assume a majority may be, but at the same time the company is taking advantage of their power and giving these absurdly large sums for doing less work than all the workers in the company. I'm sure in some companies, the CEOs just put in as much work as their workers below, and earn their salary, which is all great. I just don't know why people have to generalize that CEOs are all evil, and union workers are all evil. Understandable, humans are corrupt by nature, but not all....

Even Anita Long, the 32 year union employee, agrees with me. She gave her boss a 5 million dollar raise just within the time period of this article being posted.

This is just the sort of entitlement
that has our country heading for “Third World” status. But when you see folks picketing, it’s
understandable that people would get impassioned—but let’s peel back the onion
just a bit here…..

Don’t be confused--this type of
additional cost has been exacted on the American worker most recently by Wall
Street and folks in the company of Bernie Madoff. And during that time, we watched blissfully
as the market value of our homes doubled or tripled inside of 5 years while the
banks were more than happy to write us mortgages at any rate or term. And over the last 30 years we have been
hollowing out the shell of our economy by outsourcing and simultaneously funding
the victims of outsourcing with entitlement programs at any cost… We have been hemorrhaging money, watching on
as our economy evolve into an absolutely unsustainable model over the last 30
years. How many of you reading this owns
an American-brand automobile or cell phone or television set? And
now, all of the bubbles have burst—sending every domestic industry reeling in
the wake of it all.

            We can get
angry at Verizon and say that they are taking advantage of their union, but let’s
look at the whole picture here: The
economic landscape has changed and companies that do not find a way to offer
consumers a lower price while still remaining profitable will be out of
business and all employees will be at risk.
And the real problem is not only wages and benefits, but the union is
not nimble like the workforce that you would find at say, Comcast for example…..

            Nobody
wants to see union workers being duped into walking out on their jobs in a time
of over 20% unemployment (don’t believe the 9.x% that the govt wants you to
believe). 9.x% represents the unemployed
who are still deemed trackable by recent losses. We can argue that the CEO of Verizon is
overcompensated, but I wonder how much the leadership at the union is being
compensated even in the face of the strike.

            The sort of
artificial job security that this union environment fosters breeds complacency. Complacency leads to extinction. And as a sidenote, Verizon wireline is not
profitable (it has been losing money for years), Verizon Wireless is highly
profitable (a non-union, highly driven workforce). Were it not for Wireless, Verizon would have
already folded.
The union needs to sober up and come to terms with the market that the rest of
us have been working in for our entire lives.

            We are not
mining coal or steel here for crying out loud.
These guys are installing FiOS and DSL…..lol You don’t need a union for that.

When you pay $2300/month (as I do), then I'll listen to your argument. You knew what the job was when you took it, so don't whine about thunderstorms & telephone poles. If it's that bad, then look for something else. I'm a Verizon customer and have had just about enough of the poor service, skipped appointments, and poor customer service. Yes, Verizon's management really sucks (I know quite a few current & retired Verizon employees; all rank & file, so I know where you're coming from). They keep outsourcing their work and seem to be making a concerted effort to drive the wired phone business into the ground. The number of people who actually know and can work on that business is getting smaller by the day. Now, that being said, I still can't support the actions of the union. I've known too much over the past 18 years of my association with phone company employees to know that there is no consideration of the customer, just what the union can get. In today's economic environment, everyone has to give; both union and management, and it appears that in this case, the union's position is my way or the highway. Sorry, but no can do.

How do you think that will effect everyone else's wage and benefit packages in America ? The Delusion that " We " would benefit from the destruction of Unions is one that has been sold to us by Our Rich , along with the outright Lie that if we cut their taxes they would " Create Jobs." We forgot to make them put it in writing , and stipulate that the Jobs be here in America .

I would agree to the last part in particular. Each year it gets harder and harder for us (my family owned business) to provide even basic health insurance for our employees.

And before any of you trolls start in on me let me head you off - in my business (like many others) we pay our employees first, business expenses second and ourselves third. Let me tell you, there are times when my workers make more than I do... and I pay my workers based on three principles: (in order) work ethic, attendance, seniority.

I've had a few 'pro-union' mouths that I hired over the years complain up a storm... and let me tell you, they were the ones I ended up firing for various reasons. (sleeping on the job, bad attitudes, poor workmanship) I'm not saying you're ALL like that, it's just been my experience!

Some things to consider for both sides of
the argument: Median household income in the U.S. (that means the income ALL members of the household bring in) is
all of $44,389. That means for 2 income
households the average salary is just 22k each.
I do think those screaming about not getting paid enough should think
about that for awhile. If the CEO of
Verizon were to give back his entire salary and bonus it would equate to about
$511 per worker. (23 million divided by
45,000 workers)

It seems there is some middle ground that
these comments do not reflect. The same people who point out the ridiculous
amounts of compensation that are paid to senior management ignore the largess
of their own union bosses.

As for Verizon workers being overpaid; without knowing what the average Verizon
worker makes and how that compares to the average wage of other people in the
same geographic area with similar occupations, I think it is a bit presumptuous
to assume they are overpaid.

The biggest problem for companies trying to
offer healthcare is the never ending rapid increase in its costs. The company I
work for simply has given up on trying to offer it because there is no easy way
to budget for it. Workers need to
understand no company can afford to offer any benefit for which there are no
cost controls. Some of the best, well
intentioned companies learned this the hard way, IBM comes to mind. Until the unrealistic increases in health
care costs are contained more and more companies are gong to back away from offering
healthcare coverage.

Your CEO is making 23 million dollars a year because the number of people in the US qualified to hold that position is probably in the hundreds. On the other hand the number of Americans (and apes) qualified to climb a telephone pole is well into the millions. I know you union members hate capitalism and all, but the concept of supply and demand is a reality you eventually need to recognize.

I paid $22.85 for an iPhone 4-32GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $674 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHub.com

As a small business owner I just have to say that I never understood you union workers - you think the company owes you everything for as little work as possible. If you don't like your employer, shove off and find a better one who will treat you more to your liking. And if you spend (have spent) your whole life moving from job to job maybe the problem isn't the employers, but YOU! You unions are one of the biggest problems facing this country in the last 50 years.

Because managing union employees is a hellscape imagined only by the likes of Dante. Also, after 32 years at a union job with mandatory scheduled raises and seniority based perks she is probably making more money than the managers at least 4 levels of promotion above her. All while and working far fewer hours with much less responsibility, and higher job security. That is one of the wonderfully unamerican perks of unionized labor, there is no incentive and no benefit to doing anything to progress your career since the only thing rewarded is showing up regularly for a looooooong period of time.
