Featurewise, the only advantage for Verizon iphone vs. AT&T iphone is the former's added wi-fi hotspot capability. however, verizon charges extra for use of that feature, which att iphone users (with jailbroken iphones) have been enjoying for quite some time, at no extra cost other than one-time purchase of the app (MyWi/$19.99). Incidentally, does anyone know if Verizon's iphone can be jailbroken?
furthermore, the Verizon iphone is not capable of simultaneous use of voice and data. others have said that one cant surf the web or check email why on a phone call. These may not be a big deal, however, what about navigation apps using real-time, server-based map downloads over 3g? i cant imagine not being able to navigate using my navigation app because im on a phone call while traveling in my car.
I have nothing against Verizon but IMHO going with them would be like taking a very big step…backwards. Multi-tasking is a very big deal for me and I’m willing to bet that it is for a lot of others as well.

iP4/iP5 on VZ?

Too little now. And too late.

Hardware-vise iP4 sucks already.
It's CPU/GPU scores were bitten in 1 month by Samsung.
Plus dual-core phones just appeared on CES2011.
"No dual-core - no deal" most people say.
Several dual core Android phones were shown.

Its low weight was bitten too. Even more thin smartphones also were shown on CES2011.
Other phones exist with sizes more suitable for non-asians hand.
As well as MUCH more usable larger 4.3-4.5" screen size.

It's screen resolution is almost matched with the new QuarterHD 960x580 LCDs.

Software-vise other OSes catch it up already. That's Android 2.3 and WM7.
Basically they offer the same features and usabilty and same "charm".

So Big Game OVER for iP4 or iP5. Regional games start but who cares?

Market share numbers can be taylor to fit your fancy. The iPhone pave the way and will continue to pave the way. Its easy to spec out your phone with the latest hardware. I am more interested in what new innovations will come next. Everybody has the me too approach to the iphone as far as android. WebOS I give credit for pushing forward the user experience. Android under carries control is a lock down phone. I don't want a carrier to dictate when i can upgrade my phone and support. At least with the iphone I will get software updates till my hardware can't handle it which seems to be around three years. But it nice to see competition which will push Apple to be even better. LETS FACE IT NO SINGLE PHONE IS AS POPULAR AS THE iPhone.

Right on and well said. Its a disgrace that so called tech journalists have shamelessly reduced themselves to scribes of the Apple religion. Its Apple this, apple that. Trivial matters (ipad case, verizon iphone, skype video and other speculation and rumours) are blown up out of proportion, shadowing more relevant news in the process. All this HYPE over a flawed product that needs a rubber band to maintain signal ?, really slashgear, really ?.

Just look at other articles in this blog; the great 3D gadgets from JVC, Sony and Samsung. You can bet they will not need a crutch to perform.

At least the tide may be turning as some are finally begining to realise that Jobs may be the modern day Liberace and his devices nothing more than the emperors new clothes.

Android is already the global No 2 behind Nokias venerable Symbian.

Here in the UK, there is something of a backlash against the iPhone, the phone that cannot really phone well. In addition to the dodgy antenna, the alarm is also buggy not to talk of the tyranny of the app store and that abomination called iTunes. Android is going to take over western markets and Nokia will hold its own in emerging markets. Apple will continue to flog overpriced iDevices to the 'more money than sense brigade' who cannot see that the Emperor is really naked.

I think theres more to the equation than specs and technology. ATT has reveled in their iPhone exclusivity and it should help the consumer to see competition. It's not that they can just rush out and jump on Android if ATT doesn't play nice. People become invested in the platform by owning applications and certain types of data and comfort of use. Verizon carrying the iPhone would give them a little more freedom and leverage.
About flash, sure it's powerful and great, but again, that is not the whole story. Flash is notoriously heavy and as a result, battery consuming, on any platform. HTML5 is not the whole answer but at least it's a little more efficient in the ways that count.

Dude... the aren't being beaten overseas... its a bloodbath... it is only winning over in the US (Android)... and that too by one or two percent... once the iPhone comes to Verizon, it will be another blood bath... and with Windows Phone 7 coming and its superior user interface and apps, Android is going to be diminished a whole lot and might even become close to extinct... (okay that was a little intense, Android won't disappear, but it won't get much better than it is right now...)

"Verizon iPhone: Why do we care?"

WE DON'T!

It's nothing new. iPhone is on many other carriers around the world and getting beat down by Android. Apple sells products to a small part of the populace. . . you know the one's that think they are somehow cooler for owning a certain tech gadget. Time to move on and stop over-hyping everything Apple does. Let them make their high profit margins off underpaid Asian labor and let the rest of the world get on with the tech they will actually use.

I wish I could understand why people think CDMA is such a perfect solution. And, if you really want to know how CDMA works just go to http://techtionary.com (all the way down to chipping codes and all the RF-radio frequency issues as well) because CDMA is not perfect.

You get near a college campus at any time of the weekday and especially between classes there is no service by any carrier with 10,000+ all yaking on their phones or texting or both - all while skate-boarding and smoking.

Great article, I enjoy thoroughness and the simple answer of why we care is, because we do.
We all love a great story and indeed, this one is.

If only there was so much "to do" about why Steve Jobs bans Flash because its not what he says, Flash is a superb platform for all kinds of web media. In my humble opinion, the really great websites are Chanel.com and DolceGabanna.com all built in Flash, so Steve don't say that the world doesn't use it or need it.

Cheers, TC
