I did the same thing, as long as you are a longstanding customer Verizon will truly unlock the iPhone 4S for global roaming. I have already used other sims in it with no problem – yes it’s real.

As an international traveller who often visits the US I am looking for a better option that AT&T. I was on the line between Sprint and Verizon. I think Sprint has shot themselves in the foot with this policy. I be giving my money to Verizon thank you.

I think unlocking ALWAYS means the ability to use third-party SIMs. On Verizon, they use the phrase ACTIVATING for enabling to use of the supplied GSM Vodafone SIM. And their standard unlocking policy means allowing third-party SIMs. I have had 5 world phones unlocked this way on Verizon.

I don’t read it like that. She talks both about ‘standard unlock policy for global phones’ which says that they already do this, so what are they currently doing? And also a 60 day wait period which is similar to T-Mobile and that says you can roam internationally within 60 days but then only with their SIM, which would be the “SIM Unlock” that you elude too (which I would define as SIM enable).

It’s worth mentioning that AT&T also have a complete
lock down and do not offer to SIM unlock the iPhone or any other smartphone. Being
from Europe I cannot understand that its legal in the US to forever cripple/confiscate
HW even after contract terms are fully satisfied. Credit to T-mobile and
Verizon for upholding some standards.

Unlocking the sim doesnt necessarily mean you can use local sims in other countries!!! This is the huge misunderstanding flying around on all the web sites right now. The spokesperson for Verizon needs to educate herself on proper terminology and clarify what she means. Unlocking the sim for international use could very well just mean that they enable the GSM portion of the phone (which requires a sim) … leaving you to use their international partners for “ROAMING” (very expensive). There are two types of “Unlocked SIMS” in this case …. which one does she mean??

Let me ask you this? Why wait for the unlocked version if you can’t even use it with Sprint? The article clearly states it will only have GSM access. I’m guessing you aren’t going to be a proudly, loyal customer anymore.

I was just on the phone with Sprint and they say easy to get a sim for overseas service with their iPhone 4s. Recheck your info/source.

Where is your SIM card slot on an iPhone 4 for Verizon? Without a SIM card slot what do you mean you have been unlocked. We are talking about using a SIM card with GSM.

I agree, Sprint had an opportunity here. AT&T said theirs are locked down, and Verizon only doing one every 10 months. Sprint had an opportunity here to grab tons of international travelers with an unlocked option like you said, but this is not right.

I have an iPhone 4 on Verizon, my phone was unlocked after a few days of receiving it. I have been with Verizon for years. The process took about a whole 2 minutes. I have never had issues with the phone, with the speed of the network, or with customer service. It’s been perfectly fine.

As a 12 year Sprint customer who frequently travels to Europe & S. America for extended periods, I have only purchased “world phones” from Sprint because of the freedom it allows me while traveling. In the past, they have unlocked the SIM in 3 different Blackberries, an HTC Touch Pro 1 & 2, and without any issues – EVER. As someone who remained loyal and waited patiently while all the other
US carriers received the IPhone well before Sprint, if
they have no plans to unlock the SIM for international travel, I will be
returning all 3 Iphones I pre-ordered and waiting for an unlocked
version. If they are reneging on customers this early in the Iphone game, sadly I think the unlimited plan offering will be next to get a undocumented policy change.

Sprint Motorola Photon is a world phone with a unlocked sim, so u can use it with any international carrier. Sprint has to do this to prevent scammers from selling iPhone they just bought from Sprint for $200 on eBay unlocked for $500, especially with their lax credit check policy, they had to save there asses somehow. This will have to effect on peoples buying decision, unlimited data trumps all.

Well sprint is to ignorant in asia no matter what kind of phone you have gsm they can unlock them with or without permission to any carrier. Example when i bought the iphone 4 send it back home a week later i got it back i can use it to any gsm here in the U.S same with either verizon or sprint when i get one it will be inlock for less than 20 dollars thats how easy to unlock them.

So Sprint is basically telling people to go to Verizon or AT&T, AT&T may not be the best but at least they’ll have the fastest data speeds. Luckily I’m still grandfathered in for my unlimited data
