Because now the iPhone fan can buy an iphone that will actually work as a cell phone ;)
/s

In all seriousness. . . I really don't get this move either. All the hype over the ViPhone makes no sense. The new hardware will be out in a few months and they aren't even using the next gen services. . . but it's Apple and they are great at getting people to buy junk they just don't need right now or will be better within a short period of time. Just look at the iPhone & iPad in general. Initially released with tons of hardware missing, second gen gets lots of that hardware but a few key components still missing along with crucial software features missing, thus they can get you to upgrade over and over. . . and yet the "Apple customer" loves it.

I think that's called an addiction.

I still don't understand why any Verizon customer who has been pining for the iPhone for 4 years would rush out and get this year old hardware when the iphone 5 is just months away and will probably support LTE. While the HTC Thunderbolt has found a way to do simo voice/data, Verizon has been pretty explicit that the iPhone will not be able to do this. So folks really want to be locked in for 20 months to a CDMA phone while all their friends will be rocking the LTE?
Really want iOS wait till summer.
